Flanagan Liaison for CCCR Father Bob Hogan, BBD Associate Liaison Rosbel Hernandez Director We are very blessed that Archbishop Gustavo Garcia-Siller has a strong relationship with the Holy Spirit. As we begin the New Year let me share with you parts of his homily at his installation, so we may be inspired to continue to grow in the Spirit: The new day (Pentecost) begins with a roar of the sounds from heaven, a mighty wind-like the wind of the first morning of creation that swept across the dark waters of chaos and brought order into the world. And then tongues of fire are seen - the gift of speech in different languages from the Holy Spirit, the gift of proclamation of the word of God! Something very wonderful is happening, and the walls of the upper room cannot contain it. The disciples must share these gifts with others - with the whole world! we must reflect again on the gift of the Spirit. In Genesis (2:7) the spirit of God breathed life into dust and created a human being. At Pentecost the Spirit breathed life into a once cowardly disciple and created a new man who now had the gift of bold speech. A few weeks earlier Peter had been unable or unwilling to speak about Jesus, even to a serving woman at midnight! On Pentecost morning he is willing to proclaim the risen Lord to the entire world! My friends, it is the Holy Spirit that enables the community of faith to proclaim the Gospel, to attract a crowd, to have something to say worth hearing. The wind blows where it will. God has the power to accomplish in our midst what he wants-in spite of all obstacles. But what must we do to enable this to happen? We must be open to God s word as Samuel was. We must be willing to be empowered by the Holy Spirit like Peter and the other disciples. And most of all we must be in a loving, mutual relationship with Jesus, the risen Lord. My friends, this Missionary of the Holy Spirit, your new archbishop invites you - that is, the Lord himself calls you - to be Spirit-filled and Spirit-led missionaries of the Gospel in the world. Let us pray with confidence because our future is truly in God s good hands. Let us also re-commit ourselves to working together because our future, empowered by God s Spirit, is also in our hands. We gather today with Mary our mother, Nuestra Señora de Guadalupe, just as the first disciples prayed with her in the Upper Room. We also entrust our mission and ministry to her loving intercession. May the quality of our love for one another bring out to everyone that we are truly the Lord s disciples and missionaries! Viva Cristo Rey! Saturday, January 29, 2011 at 8:00 a.m. will be our Conference Kick-off breakfast in Jubilee Hall at St. Mary Magdalen Church. All the English and Spanish prayer group members are invited. Our united prayer and fellowship will prepare us for all the graces God wants to bestow at our Becoming a House of Prayer Retreat Conference March 4-5. Get people signed up for the conference early. If you need more registration forms, let us know. Since our conference focuses on prayer and union with God, it is very important that we prepare for the conference prayerfully. We hope that all the people who went through our prayer ministry training can come so that Fr. Bob can explain how we will be using this ministry during the Conference. You do need to call the Center to let us know how many people are coming. There is no registration cost for the breakfast, but a love offering for the Center will be taken. We packed St. Henry s Church for the Washing of the Hands/Blessing of the Renewal Mass in December. Let us continue to enter into this special time of grace when, I believe, the Lord is preparing us for even greater things he wants to do among us and in our Archdiocese. Viva Cristo Rey! 3 Volume 12 Issue 1 Page 3 The Service Committee wishes you a happy and prosperous New Year! This is the time to make a New Year s resolution. If we have made a decision already, it probably is about losing weight. The fact is any resolution that we make will require some kind of sacrifice on our part. It s not easy to give up chocolate if that s what you love, but on the other hand, restraining from it will guide us on the right path to healthy living and the more we practice abiding by good decisions we make, the longer we will stay on the right path. Living in the Spirit works the same way. The more we practice life in the Spirit, the more we will grow spiritually. We all have a tendency to live in the flesh, but the word of God tells us, that living according to the flesh produces death, but the Spirit produces abundant life. Our Lord Jesus Christ has given us the Grace to live a life according to the Spirit. He will be our comforter and encourager at a time of trouble. The Regional Charismatic Conference fast approaches, March 4th & 5th, so we're planning the annual "Kick-Off Conference Breakfast" for January 29th, 8:00 a.m. - 10:00 a.m. at St. Mary Magdalen's Jubilee Hall. Please plan to attend and help us "Ignite the fire of the Holy Spirit" as the conference approaches. The Service Committee thanks everyone who helped us renew the grace of Pentecost throughout the Year As we look forward to the New Year we ask God to bless us again throughout 2011 with a new zeal for the proclamation of the Gospel.
