2 Pastor s Letter As I think about my ten years at St. Mark s University Parish, I can t think of a better group of people with whom I would have liked to spend a decade of my life than with all of you who make up the Body of Christ in Isla Vista and UCSB. Our little university parish continues to be blessed with fantastic students and long-serving volunteers who understand that the mission of St. Mark s is a little different than the average parish with students who will spend only a relatively short time here before heading out into the world, seeking to write the next chapters of faith and life. St. Mark s is a seed bed and incubator for all things Catholic, providing a foundation for our students to not only survive as Roman Catholics in a secular environment, but to find deeper connections and reasons to believe as they grow and flourish intellectually and spiritually. I am excited and a little impatient to see the completion of our new parish hall and kitchen, work areas and vastly improved restrooms and gathering areas. Thank you for your generosity and good cheer as we wrap up this first phase of our project to renew of the buildings of St. Mark s for the next fifty years. Please continue to be generous to your parish at this time as, like any household, our expenses have increased over the past few years. Al pensar en mis diez años en la parroquia Universitaria de San Marcos, no puedo pensar en un mejor grupo de personas con el que me hubiera gustado pasar una década de mi vida que con todos ustedes que forman el Cuerpo de Cristo en Isla Vista y en UCSB. John Love, Pastor Financial Highlights Below is a summary of our income statement for St. Mark s fiscal year ended June 30th, Operating Revenue is from our weekly cash, envelope and on-line collections, sacramental donations, restricted donations and a subsidy from the Archdiocese, along with a variety of smaller revenue items. It does not include any of the pledges toward our building project; which are reported separately. Our most important revenue source is our weekly collections which includes envelopes, cash, and on-line giving. These collections total half of our income. The remaining 50% of our funding comes from other restricted, maintenance, and sacramental donations along with the Together in Mission program; primarily as a direct recipient of program funds. Parish Expenses includes parish staffing of the office and rectory, janitorial, gardening, and required health benefits, taxes etc. The most important expense is the ministry expenses which brings the Catholic faith to life for our students and other members of St. Mark s. This includes our FOCUS ministry, music, Search and education program expenses. New this year is was an assessment from the Archdiocese, which we expect will continue. In 2018 we had several one-time expenses which will not repeat, including kneelers and replacing our two aging vehicles with one more suitable. Our financial statement shows a loss and we continue to seek new sources of funds while economizing where ever we can. We look forward to completing the construction project so we can get the benefits of the new space. The finance council will continue to work with Father Love to ensure our financial stability in Thank you very much for your financial support. 4 Student Highlights Alicia Torres, Student Chair STUDENT/FOCUS STATISTICS 600 Students Attending Mass 56 Bible Study Participants 21 Bible Study Leaders 20 Disciple Makers 4 International Mission Trips 2 Student weekend retreats During 2018, UCSB students have grown tremendously in relationships with one another and with Jesus Christ. Despite ongoing construction, we have continued to pursue our relationship with Christ in a deeper ways and we continue to seek opportunities to build up the kingdom of God. This year, we have over 100 bible study participants and about 20 bible study leaders. We have 55 students involved in one-on-one discipleship as we seek to deepen our relationship with Jesus, grow in faith formation, and learn how to share Christ with others on campus. The student community has found ways to work around physical obstacles of construction, and schedule events to welcome new students in the Isla Vista community. Our FOCUS (Fellowship of Catholic University Students) missionaries have been a huge blessing within our St. Mark s family, helping all of us grow in our faith. They have helped us organize events and have taught us ways to build the friendships in our lives around Christ and Church. We started to build many of these friendships during our annual October SEARCH Retreat. The retreat is entirely student led and is filled with personal testimonies, adoration, and the sacrament of reconciliation, among other activities. The strong sense of community that came after the retreat has been overwhelmingly fruitful and daily mass has more attendees each and every day. Several students are involved in Greek life, varsity sports, interfaith outreach, other campus organizations, and homeless outreach. The students at St. Mark s are very driven and are willing to live their faith out on campus in the hopes of sharing Christ with others. They work very hard to serve one another and to serve the campus through their interactions with their peers in class or as residential assistants. Please ask our Blessed Mother to intercede for our community and keep us in your prayers. God bless! 9 CASTING THE LIGHT OF FAITH CAMPAIGN AND CONSTRUCTION UPDATE We look forward to June when we will be christening our new hall as phase I of our project is completed. A little behind schedule, we are now making good progress and construction should be substantially complete on May 16th. Thank you all for your patience during the construction project. I would like to thank everyone that has made a contribution to this project and to all of you that have completed or are in the process of completing their pledge payment. We do have a number of folks who have made pledges that have not yet sent any payment at all whom I have sent letters out to with no response, if you still intend to make a payment now would be a great time to get started. We have online options to make it easy for you to complete those pledges. Thank you for your time, wish you all a holy and blessed Lent and Easter.
