1 Pastor s Letter Annual report St. Mark's University Parish, Isla Vista/UCSB It has been a pleasure for me to hear stories about the history of our parish. Because this is our 50 th anniversary, I find myself reflecting about the very beginnings. As I understand it, the first masses of the newly formed parish were in what is now Woodstock s Pizza. Fr. Bob Donoghue, a Paulist, was a very popular young priest in 1968, and he was the main catalyst for building our current church. I found an old summary expense sheet in the archives, and doing a little extrapolating, I added up the total cost: the property cost $45,000, the actual building penciled out to $217,000, and the furnishings and equipment were $60,000. As you can see, building was a lot less expensive in the late 60 s! In those same archives, I also found an interesting vignette about St. Mark s and Fr. Donoghue: Students sought refuge at St. Mark s: from the noise of the dorms and the I.V. neighborhoods, from their fear of violence and anger stemming from campus-wide anti-war Viet Nam war protests, from their own insecurities, from the flagrant use and abuse of alcohol and drug experimentation and from their confusion about the new morality on campus. Not much has changed, has it? Some 50 years later, as we follow in the footsteps of the extraordinary vision and leadership of the Archdiocese of Los Angeles and Fr. Donoghue, we are almost ready to embark upon yet another phase in the growth and building of our little student parish in Isla Vista. Although building is important, what I find most beautiful are the people who have populated St. Mark s over the decades and tell me that their experience here changed them forever and brought them back home to church, or renewed and strengthened their faith and friendship with other Roman Catholics. Thank YOU, dear parishioners and students, for being a part of the history and future of St. Mark s as we celebrate 50 years together. Rev. John W. Love, V.F., D.Min. Ha sido un placer escuchar y pensar en la historia pasada de nuestra parroquia. Debido a que este es nuestro 50 aniversario, me encuentro reflexionando sobre los mismos comienzos. Según lo entiendo, las primeras misas de nuestra parroquia fueron celebradas en lo que es hoy Woodstock Pizza. 2 STUDENT REPORT The spiritual life of students has improved greatly in the past year. Looking back to when I first arrived at UCSB in the fall of 2013, I have witnessed our student community grow in formation and fellowship. This past year, the Sunday student mass consistently overflowed the church, there were 22 Bible studies going on each week, students were present each daily mass, and most importantly, our community grew from a group of collective individuals to a large family. Around 40 students attended SEARCH, St. Mark's fall student retreat. This retreat included testimonies from other students, small group discussions, and a whole lot of prayer. I think students found this to be a great weekend to unplug from the daily tasks that occupy our time as college students and left feeling renewed in our relationship with Christ and with each other. FOCUS (Fellowship of Catholic University Students) missionaries have done a great job leading our student body towards a greater relationship with Jesus Christ and his Church. They lead Bible studies and teach students the tools necessary to lead their own. They provide one-on-one discipleship, and guide us with advice about how to live the Christian life in college, while simultaneously walking with us in the pursuit of holiness. The student parishioners at St. Mark's are also active members of our UCSB and Isla Vista community. They are involved in many campus organizations including the associated student body government, Greek life, inter-faith outreach, arts and humanities and science clubs, and many others. St. Mark's students, inspired by the public ministry of Jesus Christ, are committed to serving their fellow students and greater Santa Barbara community. I am excited to see how our parish will continue to grow in the coming year, and I have great faith that new students will find a home away from home here at St. Mark's. Mirando hacia atrás cuando llegué por primera vez a UCSB en el otoño de 2013, he presenciado nuestra comunidad estudiantil crecer en formación y compañerismo a través de los años. El año pasado, la misa estudiantil del domingo invadió constantemente la iglesia, hubo 22 estudios bíblicos cada semana, estudiantes estuvieron presentes cada misa diaria y nuestra comunidad creció de un grupo de individuos colectivos, a una familia numerosa. 40 estudiantes asistieron a SEARCH, el retiro de estudiantes de otoño de la parroquia San Marcos. Este retiro incluyó testimonios de otros estudiantes, charlas en grupos pequeños y mucha oración. Creo que los estudiantes encontraron que este fue un gran fin de semana para desenchufar de las tareas diarias que ocupan nuestro tiempo como estudiantes universitarios y dejó el sentimiento renovado en nuestra relación con Cristo y entre uno a otro. Los misioneros FOCUS (Compañerismo de los Estudiantes Universitarios Católicos) han hecho un gran trabajo llevando a nuestro cuerpo estudiantil hacia una mayor relación con Jesucristo y su Iglesia. Dirigen estudios bíblicos y enseñan a los estudiantes las herramientas necesarias para dirigir sus propios estudios. Proporcionan un discipulado individual y nos guían con consejos sobre cómo vivir la vida cristiana en la universidad, mientras caminan juntos con nosotros en la búsqueda de la santidad. 4 Finance chair Letter Here is a summary of our income statement for St. Mark s fiscal year ended June 30 th, Operating Revenue is our cash and envelope collections, sacramental donations, and a subsidy from the Archdiocese, along with a variety of smaller revenue items. It does not include any of the donations toward our building project; which are reported separately. Our most important source of revenue is our weekly envelopes, cash, sacramental and special collections. These collections were 67% of our income. The remaining 33% of our funding comes the Together in Mission program; primarily as a direct recipient of program funds and to a lesser degree by our parish exceeding its Together in Mission goals by $3,724. Parish revenue increased 2% compared to Parish Expenses increased 7% this year and included Parish Staffing of the office and rectory, janitorial and gardening, plus required health benefits, taxes etc. The most important expense is the ministry expenses which brings the Catholic faith to life for our students and other members of St. Marks. This includes FOCUS ministry and education program expenses. With a 2% increase in revenue and a 7% increase in overall expenses our parish financial loss increased to $25,825. While we prefer positive income, our goal is to be self-supporting. Cash reserves balance out these losses over the short -term but in the long term the parish needs to be more self-sustaining. Our priority in 2017 will be to find a reasonable equilibrium between revenue and expenses. In addition, we need to increase Parish collections. The finance council will continue to work with Father Love to ensure our financial stability. Thank you for your financial support, please keep us in your prayers. 6 Celebrating 50 Years as a Student Parish Community Quiero agradecer a la gente de la parroquia de San Marcos por su continuo apoyo y oraciones, y por participar en nuestra campaña de capital. A medida que vayamos al final de otro año me gustaría informarle sobre nuestro progreso. Seguimos con nuestros esfuerzos de recaudación de fondos, y las promesas están llegando, pero debo decirles que ha sido más lento de lo que esperábamos. En este punto, tenemos alrededor de 1.5 millones en efectivo y promesas. Continuaremos con este esfuerzo hasta que alcancemos nuestro objetivo de $ 2,000,000. As we come to the end of another year I would like to update you on our progress. We are continuing with our fundraising efforts, and pledges are coming in but I must tell you that it has been slower than we had hoped. At this point, we have about 1.5M in cash and pledges. We will continue with this effort until we hit our $2,000,000 goal. I am confident that we will soon achieve our goal; so where does that leave us? This past year, we returned to the construction department of the Archdiocese of Los Angeles and asked if it was possible to do our project in two phases. They gave us their blessing to move ahead in two phases and to continue our fundraising efforts. More recently, a meeting was called with construction supervisor Cecilia Uribe of the Archdiocese of Los Angeles, our architect Tom Ochsner, Fr. Love and myself to work out the details of moving forward with our new hall, kitchen and office space. Tom Ochsner and his team are finishing up the working plans and cost estimates to submit to the County of Santa Barbara for our building permits. We are projecting the cost of Phase One to be around $1,200,000. We now have the funds to complete this phase and are looking forward to breaking ground on these improvements in May. I would like to thank Cecilia Uribe, Tom Ochsner and Fr. Love for all the work that has gone into this project. We would not be at this point without everyone s hard work and dedication.
