3 Learning outcomes: Towards the end of the course we expect students to have a good command of English at level B2, with a view to interpreting and translating from it into Spanish (G1). Development of competences: - Conceptual skills (KNOW): Knowledge of the grammar and vocabulary of written English at level B2, focusing on problematic contrastive aspects for future translators (E6). Acquisition of the skills and strategies necessary to distinguish linguistic units and translation units (E9) - Procedural skills (KNOW HOW TO DO): Reading: how to recognize and analyze the syntactic and semantic strategies necessary for reading in English. Students will be able to relate syntax and meaning in English written texts (E14). Writing and speaking: how to write different types of texts in English, as well as developing oral skills in English (E24). Grammar and vocabulary: how to avoid common interference errors at level B2 (E19). - Attitudinal skills (KNOW HOW TO BE/BEHAVE): Gradually work towards attaining learner autonomy (G15). Its general objective is the study of a foreign language with a view to translating from it into Spanish, focusing on contrastive and communicative issues Contenidos del Programa / Course Contents This course will look at the following areas: 1. The theory and practice of presentations. Students will prepare and give presentations in pairs. 2. An introduction to translation translation of short texts from Spanish to English to raise awareness of some of the issues involved in translation. 3. Listening strategies to improve listening comprehension including analysis of spoken texts. 3 de 6

4 4. Communication activities to encourage speaking fluency, autonomy and confidence. 5. Grammar consolidation and vocabulary development. 6. Online learning for self-study. 7. Theoretical/practical sessions: each class will usually have both a theoretical and a practical component. The idea being to introduce new language points and then consolidate them with practical exercises. Attendance at class implies a high level of student participation (which is reflected in the final grade). 4 de 6

5 b. ECTS tutorials: short tutorials to help student planning and give personal advice etc. c. Online activities: completion of activities online. d. Oral presentations: in pairs students will have to plan, work on and present a topic agreed upon beforehand. e. Written work: at least two pieces of written work will be required during the course. Other exercises will be given as appropriate. 3. Students must complete the requirements of Evaluation I in order to be graded and avoid the no evaluado (= fail) in their transcripts. 5.
