Cuando comience su trabajo de parto He aquí algunas respuestas a muchas de sus preguntas acerca de cuándo llamar y venir al hospital y lo que debe esperar durante su estancia en el Centro Médico de la Universidad de Washington. Será un placer atenderles a usted y su bebé. A quién llamar: Su proveedor de atención a la salud o a triage durante las horas de la clínica. Tenga menos de 37 semanas de embarazo y cree que podría estar teniendo un trabajo de parto prematuro (calambres o una sensación de agarrotamiento 6 o más veces por hora). Cuándo venir al hospital Llame a Trabajo de Parto y Parto en el Centro Maternoinfantil ( ) antes de venir al centro médico. En general, le pediremos que venga al hospital cuando: Sus contracciones tengan una separación de 5 minutos durante 1 hora si este es su primer bebé, o cuando tengan una separación de 7 a 10 minutos si usted ya ha tenido un bebé. Su bolsa de líquido amniótico se rompe incluso si no está teniendo contracciones. Cuando se rompa su bolsa de líquido amniótico, podría sentir algo mojado, o sentir solamente un goteo. O, algunas veces, se puede sentir como un chorro de líquido.

Ir al hospital Si no puede conseguir transporte al hospital y tiene un cupón médico: Un agente de transporte, tal como Hopelink o Paratransit, pueden ayudarle con transporte para ir al hospital. Llame a Trabajo de Parto y Parto (Labor and Delivery) al y ellos llamarán al agente por usted. Llame al si: Su necesidad de ir al hospital es urgente. Considera que no puede ir allí con seguridad en un vehículo o un taxi. Dónde estacionar en el hospital Estacione en el Triangle Garage frente a la calle del hospital. Si es necesario, se dispone de estacionamiento con servicio de valet frente a la entrada principal, de 8 a.m. a 5 p.m. Si considera que necesita ayuda para ir a Trabajo de Parto y Parto (Labor and Delivery), puede estacionar en el estacionamiento de la Sala de Emergencia. Cierre su vehículo con llave. Puede mover su vehículo después, o un oficial de seguridad puede estacionarlo por usted. Llegada al Centro Maternoinfantil (MIC) Entre al centro médico por la entrada principal (en el 3er piso). Una vez que esté dentro, hay sillas de ruedas si usted necesita una. Vaya directamente al MIC, ubicado en el 6to piso de Pacific Tower (use los ascensores de Pacific). Cuando llegue a Trabajo de Parto y Parto (Labor and Delivery), se le acompañará a la sala de exámenes, donde se le colocará un monitor fetal externo en el abdomen. Se proporciona una cama y sábanas para el día. Es posible que se le coloque una línea intravenosa (IV) en el brazo para asegurarse de que no se deshidrate. Asimismo, es posible que se le coloque un monitor fetal en el abdomen para que podamos ver cómo se encuentra su bebé. Una enfermera titulada la controlará de cerca. Haga preguntas siempre que no entienda lo que esté pasando. Tendremos mucho gusto en responder a sus preguntas. Después del nacimiento de su bebé Su periodo de recuperación Durante este tiempo, su enfermera la observará con frecuencia. Podrá pasar momentos especiales sosteniendo a su bebé en brazos después del nacimiento (a menos que usted o su bebé necesite cuidados especiales). Si tiene planes para alimentar al pecho a su bebé, le ayudaremos a que comience a hacerlo inmediatamente después del parto. Los bebés suelen estar despiertos y alertas en estos momentos. Su enfermera tendrá mucho gusto en ayudarle. Su permanencia después del parto Aproximadamente 2 horas después de su parto, se trasladará a usted y su bebé a una habitación particular en nuestra unidad posparto. Su bebé permanecerá en su habitación con usted mientras esté en el hospital (por lo común 1 día después de un parto vaginal sin complicaciones y 2 a 3 días después de un parto por cesárea). La enfermera le enseñará a cuidar y alimentar a su bebé. Nuestro horario de visitas es de 9 a.m. a 9 p.m. Sus otros niños podrán visitarles a usted y su bebé, a menos que estén enfermos. Su pareja, una amiga o un miembro de su familia podrá permanecer con usted y su bebé. Se les proporcionará un sofá cama para su comodidad. El descanso es vital para su curación y recuperación. Le sugerimos que intente dormir un poco y considere limitar las llamadas telefónicas y los visitantes. Esto le permitirá recuperarse del parto y tener energías para cuidar a su bebé.

Si tiene preguntas sobre usted misma, llame a su proveedor obstétrico durante horas de oficina. Las clínicas están cerradas de 5 p.m. a 8 a.m. y los fines de semana. When your labor begins Here are answers to many of your questions about when to call and come to the hospital, and what to expect during your stay at University of Washington Medical Center. We look forward to taking care of you and your baby. Who to Call: Your health care provider or triage during clinic hours. Labor and Delivery 24 hours a day: When to Call Call your health care provider, triage, or Labor and Delivery when: You have regular contractions every 10 to 15 minutes for several hours (and you are full-term). Your water breaks. You have bleeding from your vagina. You don t feel your baby moving as much as usual. You have a fever. You are less than 37 weeks pregnant and think you may be having premature labor (cramping or feeling of tightening 6 or more times an hour). Please see Warning Signs During Pregnancy, on pages 23 and 24, in this booklet. You have any other warning signs during pregnancy; see Pregnancy, Childbirth and the Newborn, page 57. When to Come to the Hospital Call Labor and Delivery at the Maternity and Infant Center ( ) before you come to the medical center. In general, we will ask you to come to the hospital when: Your contractions are 5 minutes apart for 1 hour if this is your first baby, or when they are 7 to 10 minutes apart if you have had a baby before. Your water breaks even if you are not having contractions. When your water breaks, it may just feel wet, or it may be just a trickle. Or, sometimes it can feel like a gush of fluid.

Getting to the Hospital If you cannot get a ride to the hospital and you have a medical coupon: A transportation broker, such as Hopelink or Paratransit, can help get you a ride to the hospital. Call Labor and Delivery at , and they will call the broker for you. Call if: Your need to get to the hospital is urgent. You do not feel you can get there safely by car or taxi. Where to Park at the Hospital Park in the Triangle Garage across from the street from the hospital. If needed, valet parking is available in front of the main entrance from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. If you feel you need help getting to Labor and Delivery, you may park in the Emergency Room lot. Lock your car. You can move your car later, or a security officer can park it for you. Arriving at the Maternity and Infant Center (MIC) Enter through the main entrance to the medical center (on the 3rd floor). Once you are inside, there are wheelchairs if you need one. Go directly to the MIC, located on the 6th floor of the Pacific Tower (use the Pacific elevators). When you arrive at Labor and Delivery, you will be escorted to an exam room, where an external fetal monitor will be placed on your abdomen. A doctor or midwife, who may not be your usual provider, will examine your cervix to see if true labor has started. If labor has started, you will be admitted to a labor room. If labor has not actively started, we will either send you home and tell you what to watch for, or we may send you out to walk around the hospital to help labor progress. If you have not already called your health care provider, we will call them when you arrive in Labor and Delivery.

7 Pregnancy and Giving Birth Page 103 It s Time! Your labor partner is welcome to stay with you throughout your hospital stay. A daybed and linens are provided. You may have an IV in your arm to make sure you don t get dehydrated. You may also have a fetal monitor on your abdomen so we can see how your baby is doing. A registered nurse will monitor you closely. Always ask questions if you don t understand what is going on. We are happy to answer your questions. After Your Baby Is Born Your Recovery Period During this time, your nurse will check you often. You will be able to spend some special time holding your baby after the birth (unless you or the baby needs special care). If you are planning to breastfeed, we will help you to get started right after birth. Babies are often awake and alert then. Your nurse will be happy to help you. Your Postpartum Stay About 2 hours after your delivery, you and your baby will move to a private room on our postpartum unit. Your baby will stay in your room with you while you are in the hospital (usually 1 day after an uncomplicated vaginal birth and 2 to 3 days after a Cesarean delivery). Your nurse will teach you how to care for and feed your baby. Our visiting hours are 9 a.m. to 9 p.m. Your other children are welcome to visit you and the baby, unless they are ill. Your partner, or a friend or family member, is welcome to stay with you and your baby. A daybed may be available for their comfort. Rest is vital to your healing and recovery. We suggest that you try to get some sleep and consider limiting phone calls and visitors. This will allow you to recover from giving birth and have more energy to care for your baby.

8 Page 104 Pregnancy and Giving Birth It s Time! Questions? Your questions are important. If you have questions about yourself, call your obstetric provider during office hours. Clinics are closed 5 p.m. to 8 a.m. and on weekends. When your provider s office is closed, call: Labor and Delivery: Leaving University of Washington Medical Center Before coming to the hospital, please plan how you will get home when you leave the hospital. Let your nurse know if you need to arrange a ride through the DSHS transportation broker. (See Planning for Your Hospital Stay, on pages 87 to 90 in this booklet, for more information about discharge.) Early Days at Home Please call your clinic or health care provider if you have any questions about yourself, breastfeeding or bottle feeding, or caring for your baby. You may receive a phone call at home from one of our nurses. She will call to see how you and your baby are doing and will answer any questions you may have. If an appointment has not already been scheduled by the time you leave the hospital, you will need to schedule clinic visits for you and your baby. If you had a vaginal birth, you need to see your health care provider 6 weeks after you deliver. If your provider is a nurse midwife, this visit should take place 1 to 2 weeks after you deliver. If you had a Cesarean birth, you need to see your health care provider for a visit at 2 weeks and 6 weeks. Your baby needs to be examined by a health care provider 2 weeks after birth. These clinic visits are very important! If you resume sexual relations before your checkup, be sure to use a reliable method of birth control. If you have questions, talk to your care provider.
