Utilice esta información para orientarse en su planificación. También sería recomendable referirse a Empacar para el hospital, en las páginas 91 y 92 de este folleto. Ir al hospital en trabajo de parto Planifique con anticipación sobre cómo irá al hospital cuando llegue el momento: Cómo irá al hospital? Quién estará en casa con usted cuando comience el trabajo de parto? La llevarán al centro médico? Planificación para el cuidado de sus niños mayores mientras usted está en trabajo de parto y en el hospital Si tiene hijos mayores, quién los vigilará? Cuál será su plan de respaldo? Tiene a mano los números telefónicos que necesita? Planificar con anticipación para su permanencia en el hospital Lo que puede esperar en su habitación del hospital Todas las habitaciones en la maternidad y el Centro infantil son individuales y tienen un baño privado. Se proporciona un sofá cama y ropa de cama para que la persona de respaldo se sienta cómoda. Los baños en la Unidad de trabajo de Parto y parto tienen amplias tinas de hidromasaje. En la unidad de Posparto, hay duchas con masajes de agua.

Siéntase libre de traer su música para relajarse durante su trabajo de parto. También podrá traer su propio reproductor de música si prefiere usar audífonos. Cada habitación tiene un pequeño refrigerador para bocadillos, un televisor y un reproductor de videos o DVD. Una película favorita podrá ayudarle a pasar un poco el tiempo durante el inicio del trabajo de parto. Todas las habitaciones tienen acceso inalámbrico a la red. Usted tendrá que traer su propia computadora portátil y cable. Cuánto tiempo permanecerá en el hospital? En general, si tiene un parto vaginal, usted y su bebé podrán estar preparados para que se les dé de alta aproximadamente 24 horas después del parto. Su bebé podría nacer tarde en la noche o a primeras horas de la mañana. Si esto ocurre, no se le enviará a casa durante la noche ni temprano en la mañana. Asimismo, si su bebé nace a mediodía, podría estar preparada para irse a casa hasta la tarde o la noche del día siguiente. Si tiene un parto por cesárea, probablemente se irá a casa el segundo o tercer día. Le recomendamos que haga planes para volver a casa antes de venir al hospital. Si necesita coordinar un viaje por medio de una agencia de transporte de DSHS, hágaselo saber a su enfermera. Recetas Es posible que se le receten medicamentos que deberá tomar en su casa. La farmacia del centro médico abastecerá su receta cuando usted pase por la farmacia para pacientes de consulta externa en el Pabellón de Cirugía, antes de irse. O bien, puede hacer que se la abastezcan en su farmacia local. Acuérdese de llevar con usted su tarjeta del seguro de salud y su tarjeta de beneficios de farmacia o de medicamentos. Si tiene un cupón médico, no deje de llevarlo consigo. Si se exige un copago, puede pagar con dinero en efectivo, cheque, VISA o MasterCard.

Si tiene preguntas sobre usted misma, llame a su proveedor obstétrico durante horas de oficina. Las clínicas están cerradas de 5 p.m. a 8 a.m. y los fines de semana. Cuando el consultorio de su proveedor esté cerrado, llame a: Labor and Delivery (Trabajo de parto y Parto): Certificado de nacimiento Recibirá un formulario para completar en el que se le pide el nombre de su bebé, así como información acerca de los padres. Esta información se usará para el certificado de nacimiento. Otros documentos legales Cuando la admitan a la Unidad de Trabajo de Parto y Parto, su enfermera le preguntará si tiene documentos legales relacionados con su salud. Se les suele denominar Indicaciones con anticipación (Advance Directives) o testamentos en vida. Si posee éstos u otros documentos legales, asegúrese de llevarlos con usted al hospital. Un viaje seguro de regreso a casa Usted será responsable de colocar a su bebé de forma segura en un asiento infantil para automóvil para su viaje desde el hospital hasta su casa. Se le dará folletos para ayudarle con esto. Además, en la Clínica de Atención Maternoinfantil y en la Unidad Posparto, hay un modelo actual de un asiento infantil para automóvil con un muñeco colocado en el asiento en forma apropiada. Box N.E. 5 Patient Education Page 87 Pregnancy and Giving Birth Planning for Your Hospital Stay Having your baby at University of Washington Medical Center When you are planning for your hospital stay, it is important to think through what you may need before, during, and after you give birth. Use this information to guide your planning. You may also want to refer to Packing for the Hospital, on pages 91 and 92, in this booklet. Getting to the Hospital in Labor Plan ahead for how you will get yourself to the hospital when the time comes: How will you get to the hospital? Who will be with you at home in early labor? Who will take you to the medical center? Planning for the Care of Your Older Children While You Are in Labor and at the Hospital If you have older children, who will watch them? What will your back-up plan be? Do you have the phone numbers you will need handy? Planning Ahead for Your Hospital Stay What to Expect in Your Hospital Room All of the rooms in the Maternity and Infant Center are private and have a private bath. A daybed and linens are provided for the comfort of your support person. The baths on the Labor and Delivery Unit have roomy whirlpool tubs. On the Postpartum Unit, there are showers with shower massagers.

6 Page 88 Pregnancy and Giving Birth Planning for Your Hospital Stay There is a CD player in every room. Feel free to bring your music with you to relax during your labor. You may also bring your own portable music player if you prefer to use earphones. Each room has a small refrigerator for snacks, a TV, and a VCR or DVD player. A favorite movie might help to pass some time during early labor. All rooms have wireless Internet access. You will need to bring your own laptop and cable. How long will you be in the hospital? In general, if you have a vaginal birth, you and your baby may be ready to go home about 24 hours after delivery. Your baby may be born late at night or in the early morning hours. If this occurs, you will not be sent home during the night or in the early morning. Also, if your baby is born in the middle of the day, you may be ready to go home by the afternoon or evening of the next day. If you have a Cesarean birth, you will probably go home on the second or third day. We suggest that you plan how you will get home before you come to the hospital. Let your nurse know if you need to arrange a ride through the DSHS transportation broker. Prescriptions You may be given prescriptions for medicine to take at home. The medical center pharmacy can fill your prescriptions if you stop by the outpatient pharmacy in the Surgical Pavilion before you leave. Or, you may have them filled at your local pharmacy. Remember to bring your health insurance card and your pharmacy or drug benefit card with you. If you have a medical coupon, be sure to bring it with you. If a co-pay is required, you can pay with cash, check, VISA, or MasterCard.

7 Pregnancy and Giving Birth Page 89 Planning for Your Hospital Stay Questions? Your questions are important. If you have questions about yourself, call your obstetric provider during office hours. Clinics are closed 5 p.m. to 8 a.m. and on weekends. When you provider s office is closed, call: Labor and Delivery: Birth Certificate You will receive a form to fill out that asks for your baby s name and information about the parents. This information will be used for the birth certificate. Other Legal Documents When you are admitted to the Labor and Delivery Unit, your nurse will ask you if you have legal documents related to your health. These are sometimes called advance directives or living wills. If you have these or other legal documents, be sure to bring them with you to the hospital. A Safe Ride Home You will be responsible for placing your baby safely in the car seat for your ride home from the hospital. You will be given handouts to help you with this. In addition, in the Maternity and Infant Care Clinic and on the Postpartum Unit, there is a model of an actual car seat with a doll properly positioned in the seat. Box N.E.
