RESUMEN DEL PROYECTO El presente proyecto consiste en el Estudio del Arte de los distintos dispositivos eléctricos de protección y en el análisis de cuatro instalaciones fotovoltaicas aisladas típicas, con el fin de localizar los puntos que requieran protección eléctrica y asignarles la más adecuada. El objetivo final es obtener una estandarización de las protecciones en este tipo de sistemas para facilitar proyectos futuros. La ventaja que ofrecen las instalaciones fotovoltaicas aisladas es que permiten generar energía de forma descentralizada y sin necesidad de una red eléctrica que la transporte, a parte de ser una forma de energía limpia y respetuosa con el medio ambiente. Estas instalaciones aisladas presentan una configuración eléctrica diferente de las conectadas a red (equipos, valores de corriente y tensión, etc.). Por ello, a la hora de diseñar las protecciones no se realiza de la misma manera y la normativa a utilizar es distinta. Si a esto se le añade que es escasa la experiencia en algunas de estas instalaciones y que se tiende a un mayor desarrollo de las mismas, surge la necesidad de realizar una estandarización de las protecciones para facilitar proyectos futuros. Una instalación fotovoltaica aislada se compone, básicamente, de cuatro elementos: los paneles solares, las baterías, el inversor y el regulador. Los paneles solares transforman la energía solar en eléctrica y cargan las baterías. Éstas acumulan la energía y cuando no hay generación solar proporcionan directamente la energía eléctrica. El regulador de carga controla la carga de las baterías para evitar que se originen sobrecargas o descargas excesivas que reducen la vida útil de las mismas y el inversor transforma la corriente continua que generan los 3

2 paneles en corriente alterna, que es con la que trabajan la mayoría de electrodomésticos que se comercializan. Para proteger tanto a los equipos como a las personas se estudian las posibles contingencias que se pueden producir y se analizan las alternativas que propone la Normativa existente frente a ellas. Las tres protecciones, que son necesarias en toda instalación eléctrica, son las usadas para proteger frente a sobrecorrientes, sobretensiones y electrocución. Para estudiar las protecciones contra sobreintensidades (provocadas por una sobrecarga o un cortocircuito) se emplea el Reglamento Electrotécnico de Baja tensión, ITC-BT-22, el cual recomienda el uso de fusibles y magnetotérmicos para este tipo de contingencias. Para establecer la protección necesaria frente a una sobretensión (provocada por la descarga de un rayo sobre la instalación o en las cercanías de la misma), se utiliza un estudio realizado por el Comité Europeo, el cual señala que cuando se trate de pequeñas instalaciones de poca potencia no se pondrán protecciones. Si por el contrario se trata de una instalación más grande se hará uso de varistores o incluso de pararrayos, si el nivel de tormentas en la zona es elevado. Las protecciones señaladas anteriormente se utilizan fundamentalmente para proteger los equipos. A la hora de proteger a las personas se debe analizar el riesgo de que se produzca una electrocución. Se deben evitar los contactos directos e indirectos, para lo cual se estudian las normas europeas IEC ( Protección contra los choques eléctricos. Aspectos comunes a las instalaciones y a los equipos ) y la IEC ( Recomendaciones para pequeñas instalaciones de energía renovable y sistemas híbridos para electrificación rural ), donde se señala lo siguiente: En el lado de alterna, se protegerá contra el contacto directo si la tensión supera los 50V permitidos. Por tanto se pondrán siempre protecciones ya que la tensión a la salida del inversor será de 120 ó 230V. Para ello se emplearán diferenciales. En el lado de continua se pondrán protecciones contra el contacto directo si la tensión en circuito abierto de los paneles supera 60V. Para ello se usarán fusibles o magnetotérmicos. Pero si los circuitos de alterna y continua están 4

3 separados por un aislamiento galvánico, y la tensión no supera los 120V, no serán necesarias. Frente al contacto indirecto en la parte de alterna serán necesarias las protecciones si la tensión es mayor a 50V. Por tanto siempre se pondrán, empleando para ello, dispositivos Clase II, puestas de tierra y fusibles o magnetotérmicos. En el lado de continua, se pondrán protecciones frente al contacto indirecto si la tensión supera los 120V. Para ello se emplearán las mismas protecciones que frente al contacto directo. Para realizar la estandarización de las protecciones y determinar su ubicación en las instalaciones, éstas se clasifican en cuatro grandes grupos en función de sus dimensiones y su potencia. Para ello, se usan instalaciones ya existentes de ISOFOTÓN como referencia, llegando a las siguientes conclusiones (estándares): Instalaciones individuales de hasta 100Wp de potencia, de generación en continua, generalmente no necesitan ningún tipo de protección. Las protecciones principales suelen estar incluidas en los equipos del sistema. Instalaciones individuales de entre 100 y 700Wp, si sólo alimentan en continua, necesitarán protecciones frente al contacto directo e indirecto. Si generan en alterna, lo normal es que no las necesiten en el lado de continua pero sí, en el de alterna. En instalaciones individuales de más de 700Wp, harán falta las protecciones en alterna contra el contacto directo e indirecto y contra cortocircuitos y sobretensiones. En el caso de una Central Híbrida, todas las protecciones, tanto en alterna como en continua, serán necesarias, así como las protecciones frente a cortocircuitos y sobretensiones. 5

4 STANDARIZATION OF ELECTRICAL PROTECTION DEVICES FOR ISOLATED PHOTOVOLTAIC SYSTEMS PROJECT SUMMARY The topic of this project is the study of the different electrical protection devices and the analysis of four typical isolated photovoltaic systems, in order to locate the main points requiring electrical protection and to choose the most adequate ones for them. The final aim is to standarize the protections for this kind of systems to ease future projects. The advantage of isolated photovoltaic systems is that they generate energy in a decentralized way without needing an electric grid to transport it. Besides, it is a renewable energy enviromentally friendly. Since they are not connected to the grid, main characteristics related to equipments, current and voltage values, among others, are different from the systems connected to the grid. Therefore, the way to design the protections needed is different and the Technical Standards to follow as well. Moreover, taking into account the short experience with some these systems and its increasing development, the need to standarize the protections arises. The four basic components of an isolated photovoltaic installation are: the PV generator, the batteries, the inverter and the charge regulator. The PV generator transforms the solar energy into electrical energy and charges the batteries. Batteries accumulate the energy and, when there is no solar generation available, they provide electrical energy directly. The charge regulator controlls the charge and discharge of the batteries to avoid overcharges and excessive discharges, what may reduce their life. The inverter transforms the DC provided by the PV generator into AC, which supply energy to the majority of the common electrical appliances. To proctect devices and people, several failures that can take place, are studied aswell as possible solutions proposed by the Technical Standards existing. The three electrical protections that are always needed in any electrical installation, are those employed to protect from overcurrents, overvoltage and electric shocks. 6

5 To study the overcurrent protections (overcurrents are provoqued by an overcharge or a shortcircuit) the REBT, ITC-BT-22 is used, which recommends to use fuses or magnetic circuit breakers (MCB). To stablish the adecuate protection for an overvoltage (these are provoqued by lightning discharging on the installation or the surroundings) an European Comission Research is used. It recommends not to use protections when working with a small instalation with low power. However, for a bigger one, dischargers and even lightning conductors, in case of frequent lightning storms, might be used. The already mentioned protections are used to protect equipments. When it comes to protect people, the risk of electric shock must be taken into account. As direct and indirect contacts must be avoided, the IEC ( Protection against electric shock. Common aspects for installation and equipment ) and the IEC ( Recommendations for smal renewable energy and hybrid systems for rural specification ) must be studied, where the following is said: On the AC side, there will be protections against direct contact if the voltage is higher than the 50V allowed. Therefore, protections will be always installed as the voltage leaving the inverter will be 120 or 230V. Residual current devices will be employed. On the DC side, there will be protections against direct contact if the voltage is higher than the 60V allowed. Therefore, fuses and circuit breakers will be installed. Unless the AC and DC circuits are physically separated and the voltage is not higher than 120V, they will have to be used. Against indirect contact on the AC side, protections will be needed if the voltage level is superior to 50V. Therefore, they will always be needed, so Class II devices, earthing arrangement and fuses or circuit breakers will be employed. On the DC side, protections against indirect contact will be installed in case the voltage is higher than 120V. The protections to be used will be the same than those for direct contact. To standarize the protections and determine their location on the installation, these will be classified in for main groups depending on their size and power. Existing 7

6 and operating systems installed by ISOFOTON will be used as reference. Main ideas drawn are the following: Individual systems up to 100Wp, supplying energy in DC, generally don t need any type of protection. Individual systems with power between 100Wp and 700Wp, supplying in DC will need protections against direct and indirect contact. In case they supply in AC, they won t usually need them on the DC side, but they will need them on the AC side. Individual systems with higher power than 700Wp will need protections agains direct and indirect contact, shortcircuits and overvoltages. For a hybrid plant all the protections, AC and DC side, are required, aswell as the protections against shortcircuits and overvoltages. 8
