2 Biographical Note immy López Reseña Biográica Peruvian composer immy López was born in Lima in From he studied with renowned Peruvian composer Enrique Iturriaga at the National Conservatory o Music in Lima, and rom with Veli-Matti Puumala and Eero Hämeenniemi at the Sibelius Academy in Helsinki, Finland, rom where he obtained his Master o Music degree. El compositor peruano immy López nació en Lima en Desde 1998 al 2000 estudió con el renombrado compositor peruano Enrique Iturriaga en el Conservatorio Nacional de Música en Lima, y del 2000 al 2007 con Veli-Matti Puumala y Eero Hämeenniemi en la Academia Sibelius en Helsinki, Finlandia, donde obtuvo su grado de Maestría en Música. He has been awarded the ollowing prizes: 2009 Georges Ladd Prix de Paris (University o Caliornia at Berkeley); Kranichsteiner Musikpreis at the 2008 Darmstadt International Course or Contemporary Music (Germany); 2008 Morton Gould Young Composer Award (New York) or his concertino or piano, strings, brass and percussion titled Epiphany ; 2008 Nicola de Lorenzo Prize (UC Berkeley) or Epiphany ; Orchestra Composition Award - SävellYS 2006 Composition Competition (Finland) or his orchestral work The Plea ; Stipendienpreis at the International Course or Contemporary Music, Darmstadt 2006 (Germany) or his chamber work Kratmaschine ; Horonable Mention at the Irino Composition Prize or Chamber Music 2005 (apan) or his string quartet La Caresse du Couteau ; First Prize - ALEA III 2003 International Composition Competition (USA) or his piece K asa or violin and piano; and the Orchestra Prize - CCA International Composition Competition 2002 (Taiwan) or his orchestral work Carnynx. In May 200 he presented the ballet Los Magos del Silencio in Lima. This ballet, sponsored by the Embassy o Finland in Peru, was successully shown 15 times to a ull theatre. On uly o the same year, his Concerto or Koto and Orchestra was premiered by the UMA Kamerorkest in The Netherlands with Makiko Goto as soloist, and later on he was commissioned a String Quartet that was premiered on November 1 st at the Opening Concert o the Lima International Contemporary Music Festival organized by the Embassy o Spain in Peru. In une 2005, Kratmaschine, or recorders and percussion, was premiered in Germany. This piece was commissioned by the ADevantgarde Festival in collaboration with the Or-Zentrum, Munich. He was awarded the Martin Wegelius Scholarship in 2005 in recognition o his compositional work. In 2006 the Minister o Education o Peru, avier Sota Nadal, commissioned him an orchestral composition or the inauguration o the National Library o Peru. This work entitled América Salvae was premiered on March 2006 by the composer himsel conducting the National Symphony Orchestra o Peru. In October 2007 Fiesta! or chamber ensemble, was premiered in Lima. The ull orchestra version was premiered by the Baltimore Symphony Orchestra in May Fiesta! was commissioned by Miguel Harth-Bedoya on the occasion o the 100 th anniversary o the Lima Philharmonic Society. immy López, at the time o this publication, is currently working toward a PhD in composition at the University o Caliornia at Berkeley. He is a member o ASCAP, SUOMEN SÄVELTÄÄT and CIRCOMPER. En mayo del 200 presentó su ballet Los Magos del Silencio en Lima auspiciado por la embaada de Finlandia en el Perú, espectáculo que exitosamente se representó 15 veces a teatro lleno. En ulio del mismo año su Concierto para koto y orquesta ue estrenado por la UMA Kamerorkest en Holanda con Makiko Goto como solista y más adelante su Cuarteto de cuerdas ue comisionado para inaugurar el Festival de Música Clásica Contemporánea organizado por la embaada de España en el Perú. En el 2005, Kratmaschine, para lautas dulces y percussion ue estrenada en Alemania y ue comisionada por el ADevantgarde Festival en colaboración con el Or- Zentrum, Munich. En el 2005 immy López recibió la beca Martin Wegelius por su trabao composicional. En el 2006 el ministro de educación del Perú, avier Sota Nadal, le comisionó una obra orquestal para la inauguración del nuevo local de la Biblioteca Nacional del Perú. Esta obra titulada América Salvae ue estrenada en marzo del mismo año, eecutada por la Orquesta Sinónica Nacional del Perú, bao la dirección del mismo compositor. En octubre del 2007 su obra Fiesta! para ensamble instrumental ue estrenada en Lima y luego la versión orquestal en mayo del 2008 por la Orquesta Sinónica de Baltimore, ambas a cargo de Miguel Harth-Bedoya, quién comisionó esta obra para la celebración de los 100 años de la Sociedad Filarmónica de Lima. immy López, al momento de esta publicación, se encuentra estudiando un doctorado en composición en la Universidad de Caliornia en Berkeley. El es miembro de la ASCAP, SUOMEN SÄVELTÄÄT y CIRCOMPER. 3 Commentary by the composer Fiesta! Comentarios del autor During recent years, eclecticism has become an important part o my musical language. The challenge o creating musically sensible interactions out o the uxtaposition o apparently incompatible musical sources some o which result in unexpected contrasts ascinates me. Fiesta! draws inluences rom several musical sources including: European academic compositional techniques, Latin-American music, Aro-Peruvian music and today s pop music. It utilizes elaborate developmental techniques while keeping the primeval driving orces still latent in popular culture. Durante los últimos años, el eclecticismo se ha convertido en parte importante de mi lenguae musical. Me ascina el reto de crear interacciones que guarden un sentido musical a partir de la yuxtaposición de uentes aparentemente incompatibles, de las que muchas veces resultan contrastes inesperados. Fiesta! ha sido inluenciada por varias uentes musicales tales como: técnicas de la composición académica europea, música latinoamericana, música aro-peruana y la música pop de hoy en día. Techno, the ourth and last movement, uses Latin-American rhythms such as merengue. The trumpet and trombone solo at bar 70 marks the beginning o a section where techno rhythms are made explicit. In a regular techno piece, this type o solo would be played by synthesizers, and would generally happen at the precise moment in which the constant beat o the bass drum has been momentarily suspended in order to give the music a certain lightness that wouldn t be otherwise achieved i the electronic bass drum were to continue its non-stop beat. Bar 8 constitutes the most direct allusion to the techno genre; Timpani and Bass Drum replicating the steady beat while cymbals play in syncope. This is the irst piece where I have made explicit use o elements rom popular music, but it is certainly not the irst time it s being done. Composers rom the past, especially during the baroque, would write suites that would consist o a series o dances with names such as allemande, gigue, sarabande, etc. These dances were very popular at European courts: the nobles would gather and dance to the accompaniment o a small instrumental ensemble in residence. Later on, some composers decided to use these dances and make them more sophisticated. That was part o my intention when picking up the genres that I mentioned earlier. I believe they have enough potential to ustiy urther development, but always keeping the primeval driving orces present in them. immy López This piece (originally scored or chamber ensemble) was commissioned by Miguel Harth-Bedoya to celebrate the 100 th anniversary o the Lima Philharmonic Society in The ull orchestra version received its irst perormance in May 2008, under Miguel Harth-Bedoya and the Baltimore Symphony Orchestra. This arrengement or wind orchestra has been made by David Claudio and it was commissioned by Maritza Cáceres. Techno, el cuarto y último movimiento, utiliza ritmos latinoamericanos tales como el merengue. El solo de trompetas y trombones en el compás 70 marca el inicio de la sección a partir de la cual los ritmos de techno se hacen explícitos. En un techno tradicional, este tipo de solo sería tocado por sintetizadores, y ocurriría generalmente en el momento preciso durante el cual el pulso constante del bombo electrónico es momentáneamente suspendido para darle a la música cierta ligereza, imposible de lograr si no detuviese su pulso constante. La alusión más directa al género del techno se puede apreciar en el compás 8: timbales y bombo imitan el pulso constante mientras que los platillos tocan en síncopas. Ésta es la primera pieza en la que he hecho un uso tan explícito de elementos de la música popular, pero no es ciertamente la primera vez que se ha hecho. Compositores del pasado, especialmente durante el barroco, escribieron suites que consisten de una serie de danzas como la alemanda, giga, sarabanda, etc. Estas danzas ueron muy populares en las cortes europeas: los nobles se reunían y bailaban con el acompañamiento de un pequeño ensamble instrumental residente. Luego, algunos compositores decidieron emplear estas danzas y hacerlas un poco más soisticadas. Ésa era ustamente parte de mi intención al recoger los géneros musicales que he mencionado.
