2 Enrique Iturriaga Biographical Note The renowned Peruvian composer Enrique Iturriaga was born in Lima in 19 Between 194 and 199 he studied piano with Lily Rosay and began his studies in Theory and Harmony with Andrés Sas In Peru he has also written music or the theatrical works o Sebastián Salazar Bondy, ulio Ramón Ribeyro and Alonso La Torre, among others Ater a time studying Economics at the Catholic University o Peru, he decided to dedicate himsel to composition and was admitted to the National Conservatory o Music, where he studied this specialty with Rodolo Holzmann rom 1945 to 1950 and graduated as Proessor o Composition in 1954 Still a student, in 1947 he was awarded the National Prize "Duncker-Lavalle" or his work Canción y Muerte de Rolando or voice and orchestra, with text by the poet orge Eduardo Eielson The work was premiered in 1949 by Theo Buchwald and the National Symphony Orchestra o Peru, with Gloria Colmenares as the soloist In 1950 he travelled to Paris thanks to a scholarship rom the rench government, and studied with Arthur Honegger during 1950 and 195 Upon his return to Peru, along with composition and teaching, he worked as chorus conductor and took part in the school music scene until 195 Between 195 and 190 worked as a music critic or the newspaper "El Comercio in Lima In April o 1957 he was awarded the "uan Landaeta" Prize or his work Suite or orchestra, in the competition celebrating the occasion o the Second Latin-American estival o Caracas The ury was comprised o Aaron Copland, Alberto Ginastera, Carlos Chávez, Domingo Santa Cruz and uan Bautista Plaza Suite was premiered by Carlos Chávez in Caracas, and a year later in Lima In 19 he travelled to the United States to acquaint himsel with its universities and other higher institutions in the music ield, and to study the work being done there He visited Columbia University, Harvard University, University o Rochester, North Paciic University, University o Texas at Austin, Howard University, University o Caliornia, Berkeley, Stanord University, University o Caliornia, Los Angeles, Massachusetts Institute o Technology (MIT) and The uilliard School, among others OR REERENCE ONLY NOT OR PUBLIC That same year he travelled to Santiago, having been invited by the University o Chile to attend the Pan-American Congress o Musical Educators The ollowing year, in 194, he returned to Chile to serve as a ury member at the Biennial Competition o Chilean Music In 195 he composed his symphonic work Vivencias, commissioned by the Committee or the Third Pan-American estival in Washington DC and premiered by Lukas oss and the Bualo Symphony Orchestra One o the most unusual works I have done is the Homenae a Stravinsky (Homage to Stravinsky) At that time I was working as a music critic or [Peruvian newspaper] El Comercio; I was writing something I don t even remember what in a very big room, when all o a sudden someone tapped my shoulder and said Hey - Stravinsky died And right at that moment, believe it or not, the work was written In that moment I was quite stricken by the brutish way that the ournalist one o many there that day - so casually told me about Stravinky s death and then continued on his way That is when I said to mysel, but a Peruvian paying tribute to Stravinsky, how would that work And then I realized that it would have to be an homage, a Peruvian homage, one which would include some o our native elements I immediately thought about L Histoire du Soldat, perhaps a couple o soloists, and the caón came to mind And violins Deinitely not, nor violas; ust cellos and basses, because I wanted Homenae a Stranvisky About the work Maestro Iturriaga has taught music rom 1957 to present, mainly at the National Conservatory o Music (Composition, Harmony and Analysis), where he was Director between 197 and 197, and where he is, at present, Emeritus Proessor Until 197 he was also a proessor in the Arts Department and is now Emeritus Proessor o the School o Letters at the prestigious National University o San Marcos, the oldest university in the Americas Among his other works that have received awards are Homenae a Stravinsky, composed in 1971 or caón and orchestra, or which he received again the "Duncker-Lavalle" prize, and his Symphony unín and Ayacucho, composed in 1974, or which he won the "Army o Peru" Prize Enrique Iturriaga is co-author o the book Music in Peru, published by Patronato Popular y Porvenir in 195 In 19 The National University o San Marcos published his Method o Melodic Composition, a synthesis o the work that he developed in Lima and Quito or the Regional Program o Musicology (UNESCO-PNDP) between 197 and 19 In addition to the aorementioned works, other highlights are his works or piano: Pregón y danza, La máquina, Ensayos interválicos and Tres piezas para piano ; his works or voice and piano: Cuatro poemas de avier Heraud, Dos eercicios poéticos and Tres poemas Sin título de Eielson ; his chamber works: Expresiones or violin, Llamadas y uga para un Santiago or brass ensemble, Manormeyor or string quartet, Pequeña suite or violin and cello, y Paisae or lute and guitar; and his choral works: Las cumbres, Adivina, adivinanza, Tres huaynos de Navidad, Tres adivinanzas or children, Viene y va y vueltas da and Desiertos ; and other works: Obertura para una comedia, De la lírica campesina, Tres canciones para coro y orquesta y Tres danzas de William Byrd In celebration o his 90 th birthday, in October 00 and March, 009 Enrique Iturriaga was invited to attend concerts o his Sinonía unín and Ayacucho in the cities o ort Worth and Madrid, respectively Both presentations were under the baton o renowned conductor Miguel Harth-Bedoya, and the concert in Madrid, with the National Symphony Orchestra o Spain, was recorded and broadcast by Spanish Radio and Television Corporation (RTVE) PERORMANCE USE something severe, which would avoid emotional phrases, with percussive piano playing Then I turned to what to write or the caón: in general even the best caon players don t read music, so there could be moments o improvisation But on the other hand how would it eel to have a caón in ront o an orchestra There could be a clash o color, so it occurred to me to have another caón player within the orchestra, one that could read music, who was simply one o the members o the orchestra This was the very unusual way that the work came together At the same time there was also the idea o inishing the work with the caón I looked or motis, because that is how L Histoire du Soldat was, ending with the percussion In that sense I made the caón the soloist, beginning very strongly and later diminishing while the orchestra would continue, ading out and leaving the caón to end the work alone The work was completed in one week Enrique Iturriaga s works are published by ILARMONIKA (wwwilarmonikacom)

3 Enrique Iturriaga Reseña Biográica El renombrado compositor peruano Enrique Iturriaga nació en Lima en 19 Entre 194 y 199 estudió piano con Lily Rosay y se inició en Teoría y Armonía con Andrés Sas En el Perú ha estado vinculado al movimiento teatral y ha escrito música para obras de Sebastián Salazar Bondy, ulio Ramón Ribeyro y Alonso La Torre, entre otros Luego de un tiempo en que hizo estudios universitarios de Ciencias Económicas en la Universidad Católica del Perú, ingresó al Conservatorio Nacional de Música ya decidido a dedicarse a la composición, donde estudió esta especialidad con Rodolo Holzmann de 1945 a 1950 y se graduó como proesor de composición hacia 1954 Siendo aún alumno, en 1947 obtuvo el Premio Nacional Duncker-Lavalle por su obra Canción y Muerte de Rolando para voz y orquesta, sobre textos del poeta orge Eduardo Eielson La obra ue estrenada en 1949 por Theo Buchwald y la Orquesta Sinónica Nacional del Perú, con Gloria Colmenares como solista En 1950 viaó a París con una beca del gobierno rancés, y estudió con Arthur Honegger durante los años 1950 y 195 A su regreso al Perú, al lado de la composición y la enseñanza, dirigió coros y participó en el movimiento escolar hasta 195 Entre 195 y 190 trabaó como crítico musical del diario El Comercio de Lima En abril de 1957 obtuvo el premio uan Landaeta por su obra Suite para orquesta, en el concurso convocado con ocasion del II estival Latinoamericano de Caracas El urado estuvo compuesto por Aaron Copland, Alberto Ginastera, Carlos Chávez, Domingo Santa Cruz y uan Bautista Plaza Suite ue estrenada por Carlos Chávez en Caracas y un año más tarde en Lima En 19 viaó a los EEUU invitado para conocer y estudiar la labor de las universidades y otras instituciones superiores en el campo de la música Visitó las universidades de Columbia, Harvard, Rochester, North Paciic, Austin, Howard, Caliornia en Berkeley, Stanord y Los Angeles además de MIT y la Escuela uilliard, entre otras instituciones OR REERENCE ONLY NOT OR PUBLIC Ese mismo año viaó a Santiago invitado por la Universidad de Chile para asistir al Congreso Interamericano de Educadores Musicales y al año siguiente, en 194, regresó a Chile como urado designado por los compositores chilenos al Concurso Bienal de Música Chilena En 195 compone su obra sinónica Vivencias por encargo del Comité para el III estival Interamericano de Washington (DC), la cual ue estrenada por Lukas oss con la Orquesta Sinónica de Bualo Una de las obras más raras que he hecho es el Homenae a Stravinsky Yo trabaaba como crítico para El Comercio; estaba escribiendo algo ni sé qué cosa en un salón muy grande y de repente sentí que alguien me palmea el hombro y me dice: Oye, se murió Stravinski en ese momento la obra estaba hecha, aunque parezca mentira Ahí mismo me quedé un poco tocado por esa cosa un poco brutal de uno de los tantos periodistas que estaba ahí, que me dio eso y se siguió de largo ue cuando me die pero un peruano a Stravinski, cómo puede ser eso Y ahí me puse a pensar que tendría que ser un homenae pero peruano, que contuviera cosas nuestras Pensé inmediatamente en la Historia del soldado, tal vez en algunos solistas; y se me ocurrió el caón Y violines No, de ninguna manera, ni violas, solamente violonchelos y contrabaos, porque quería algo severo, que evitara Homenae a Stravinsky Notas sobre la obra Su labor de docente la ha realizado principalmente en el Conservatorio Nacional de Música desde el año 1957 hasta la echa (composición, armonía y análisis), entidad de la cual ha sido director entre 197 y 197, y de la cual es actualmente Proesor Emérito Así mismo ha sido proesor del programa académico de Arte de la acultad de Letras la Universidad Nacional Mayor de San Marcos, la más antigua de América, hasta 197 y es también Proesor Emérito de esta prestigiosa Universidad Entre sus otras obras que han sido premiadas iguran: Homenae a Stravinsky, compuesta en 1971 para caón y orquesta, que recibió el Premio Duncker-Lavalle por segunda ocasión y su Sinonía unín y Ayacucho compuesta en 1974, que le valió el Premio Eército del Perú Enrique Iturriaga es co-autor del libro La música en el Perú, publicado por el Patronato Popular y Porvenir en 195 y en 19 La Universidad Nacional de San Marcos editó su Método de Composición Melódica que reune la labor y las experiencias que desarrolló en Lima y Quito para el Programa Regional de Musicología (UNESCO-PNDP) entre 197 y 19 Además de las obras mecionadas, destacan sus obras para piano: Pregón y danza, La máquina, Ensayos interválicos y Tres piezas para piano ; sus obras para canto y piano: Cuatro poemas de avier Heraud, Dos eercicios poéticos y Tres poemas Sin título de Eielson ; sus obras de cámara: Expresiones para violín, Llamadas y uga para un santiago para ensamble de metales, Manormeyor para cuarteto de cuerdas, Pequeña suite para violín y violoncello y Paisae para lauta y guitarra; y sus obras corales: Las cumbres, Adivina, adivinanza, Tres huaynos de Navidad, Tres adivinanzas para niños, Viene y va y vueltas da y Desiertos, además de Obertura para una comedia, De la lírica campesina, Tres canciones para coro y orquesta y Tres danzas de William Byrd Con motivo de la celebración de sus noventa años, en octubre de 00 y marzo de 009 Enrique Iturriaga ue invitado para asistir a las presentaciones de su Sinonía unín y Ayacucho en las ciudades de ort Worth y Madrid, respectivamente Ambas presentaciones estuvieron bao la conducción de Miguel Harth-Bedoya y el concierto en Madrid, con la Orquesta Sinónica Nacional de España, ue grabado y transmitido por Radio Televisión Española (RTVE) PERORMANCE USE rases emotivas, con el piano tocado percusivamente Y además la orma con el caón, pero como en general los buenos caonistas no leen música, entonces podría ser con momentos en que el caón improvisa Pero por otra parte cómo sentir un caón rente a una orquesta Podría haber un choque de color, entonces se me ocurrió poner otro caón dentro de la orquesta que sí leyera, que era ustamente uno de los miembros de la orquesta Así ueron las cosas, de lo más raras Y por otro lado, estaba la idea de terminar la obra con el caón Busqué algunos motivos porque así ue la Historia del soldado, que termina con la percusión Entonces hice que el caón uera el solista en ese sentido, que empezara muy uerte y luego baara y la orquesta se uera yendo, apagando y quedara el caón solo La obra estuvo echa en una semana Las obras de Enrique Iturriaga están publicadas por ILARMONIKA (wwwilarmonikacom)
