3 Biograhical Note immy Lóez Reseña Biográica Born in Lima, eru in 1978, immy Lóez is already establishing an international ollowing. rom 1998 until 2000 he studied with Enrique Iturriaga at the National Conservatory o Music in Lima, and rom 2000 till 2007, with Veli-Matti uumala and Eero Hämeenniemi at the Sibelius Academy in Helsinki, rom where he obtained his Master o Music Degree in immy Lóez, nacido en Lima en 1978, se encuentra ya logrando un reconocimiento internacional. Desde 1998 hasta 2000 estudió con Enrique Iturriaga en el Conservatorio Nacional de Música en Lima, y de 2000 a 2007 con Veli-Matti uumala y Eero Hämeenniemi en la Academia Sibelius en Helsinki, en donde obtuvo su Maestría en Música en His works have been erormed by ensembles such as Chicago Symhony Orchestra, hiladelhia Orchestra, Boston Symhony Orchestra, St. aul Chamber Orchestra, Atlanta Symhony Orchestra, ort Worth Symhony, Helsinki hilharmonic, The Hague Residentie Orkest, Symhony Orchestra o Chile and the National Symhony Orchestra o eru, among others; and in venues such as Carnegie Hall, Asen Music estival, Tanglewood Music estival, Darmstadt Music estival, Donaueschingen Music estival and the 2010 Youth Olymic Games in Singaore. 4 Commentary by the comoser iesta! Comentarios del autor During recent years, eclecticism has become an imortant art o my musical language. The challenge o creating musically sensible interactions out o the uxtaosition o aarently incomatible musical sources some o which result in unexected contrasts ascinates me. iesta! draws inluences rom several musical sources including: Euroean academic comositional techniques, Latin-American music, Aro-eruvian music and today s o music. It utilizes elaborate develomental techniques while keeing the rimeval driving orces still latent in oular culture. Movements one (Trance 1) and three (Trance 2) are connected to each other in sirit and orm. Both start energetically, eature slow assages and lead to the ollowing movement by means o oen endings. The word trance belongs to the realm o techno music. Techno is a orm o electronic dance music which generally makes use o hynotic and reetitive rhythms. I use this term to establish a connection with younger generations who are not usually drawn to concerts o classical music. But a musical connection can also be ound at the end o the abovementioned movements, both o which eature sot melodies over an ostinato or a edal note. Although ostinatos and edal notes are mostly associated to the world o classical music, they do establish a connection with the reetitive world o techno music. In the latter, the urose o reetition is to kee a steady ulse so that everybody can dance continuously. It is also an eective way o building u tension and keeing it high at all times. But I also use the word trance in its original meaning, thus trying to convey the hynotizing state achieved while listening to a constantly shiting melody against a static background, much like in Hindu music, where melodies unold through a series o melismas against a edal note and over a san o several minutes. Movements two (Countertime) and our (Techno) are conclusive in character and kee high levels o energy rom beginning to end. Latin rhythms also lay an essential art in them; thereore, the ercussion section rises to rominence on several assages. Countertime is an interlay o syncoes where the downbeat is constantly shited rom the strong to the weak beat o the bar. The word countertime has been derived rom counteroint, which in the realm o music theory deines the rules o coexistence and interaction between two or more melodies, the goal being to roduce a harmonious whole. I use the word countertime to underline the interaction between an underlying steady ulse (not written out in the score) and the actual rhythms laying against it. Techno, the ourth and last movement, uses Latin-American rhythms such as merengue. The trumet and trombone solo at bar 70 marks the beginning o a section where techno rhythms are made exlicit. In a regular techno iece, this tye o solo would be layed by synthesizers, and would generally haen at the recise moment in which the constant beat o the bass drum has been momentarily susended in order to give the music a certain lightness that wouldn t be otherwise achieved i the electronic bass drum were to continue its non-sto beat. Bar 8 constitutes the most direct allusion to the techno genre; Timani and Bass Drum relicating the steady beat while cymbals lay in syncoe. This is the irst iece where I have made exlicit use o elements rom oular music, but it is certainly not the irst time it s being done. Comosers rom the ast, esecially during the baroque, would write suites that would consist o a series o dances with names such as allemande, gigue, sarabande, etc. These dances were very oular at Euroean courts: the nobles would gather and dance to the accomaniment o a small instrumental ensemble in residence. Later on, some comosers decided to use these dances and make them more sohisticated. That was art o my intention when icking u the genres that I mentioned earlier. I believe they have enough otential to ustiy urther develoment, but always keeing the rimeval driving orces resent in them. immy Lóez Durante los últimos años, el eclecticismo se ha convertido en arte imortante de mi lenguae musical. Me ascina el reto de crear interacciones que guarden un sentido musical a artir de la yuxtaosición de uentes aarentemente incomatibles, de las que muchas veces resultan contrastes ineserados. iesta! ha sido inluenciada or varias uentes musicales tales como: técnicas de la comosición académica euroea, música latinoamericana, música aro-eruana y la música o de hoy en día. Esta obra emlea técnicas elaboradas de desarrollo ero manteniendo las uerzas rimordiales que subyacen en la cultura oular. El rimer y tercer movimientos (Trance 1 y Trance 2 resectivamente) están conectados entre sí en esíritu y orma. Ambos emiezan con energía, contienen asaes lentos y conducen al siguiente movimiento or medio de inales abiertos. La alabra trance ertenece al mundo de la música techno. El techno es un género bailable de música electrónica que, or lo general, hace uso de ritmos hinóticos y reetitivos. Yo utilizo este término ara establecer una conexión con las generaciones óvenes que normalmente no se sienten atraídas hacia la música clásica. También se uede areciar, sin embargo, una conexión musical al inal de los movimientos antes mencionados, los cuales oseen melodías suaves sobre un ostinato o una nota edal. A esar de que esos elementos están asociados al mundo de la música clásica, ayudan a establecer una conexión con el mundo reetitivo de la música techno. En ese género, el roósito de la reetición es mantener un ulso constante ara que todos uedan bailar continuamente. También se trata de una manera eectiva de generar tensión y mantenerla alta en todo momento. ero también utilizo la alabra trance en su signiicado original, tratando de transmitir el estado hinótico que se alcanza al escuchar a una melodía en constante cambio en contraste con un ondo estático, de la misma manera en que las melodías de la música hindú desarrollan una serie de melismas sobre una nota edal y durante un eriodo de varios minutos. El segundo y cuarto movimientos (Contratiemo y Techno resectivamente) son de carácter conclusivo y mantienen altos niveles de tensión de rinciio a in. Ritmos latinoamericanos también uegan un ael esencial en ellos, de manera que la ercusión emerge como rotagonista en varias ocasiones. Contratiemo es un uego de síncoas en el cual el rimer tiemo es cambiado constantemente del tiemo uerte al tiemo débil del comás. La alabra contratiemo ha sido derivada de contraunto, que en el camo de la teoría musical deine las normas de coexistencia e interacción entre dos o más melodías simultáneas, y cuyo obetivo es roducir un todo armónico. Utilizo la alabra contratiemo ara resaltar la interacción entre un ulso constante tácito (no escrito en la artitura) y los ritmos escritos que lo contradicen. OR REERENCE ONLY NOT OR UBLIC ERORMANCE USE Techno, el cuarto y último movimiento, utiliza ritmos latinoamericanos tales como el merengue. El solo de trometas y trombones en el comás 70 marca el inicio de la sección a artir de la cual los ritmos de techno se hacen exlícitos. En un techno tradicional, este tio de solo sería tocado or sintetizadores, y ocurriría generalmente en el momento reciso durante el cual el ulso constante del bombo electrónico es momentáneamente susendido ara darle a la música cierta ligereza, imosible de lograr si no detuviese su ulso constante. La alusión más directa al género del techno se uede areciar en el comás 8: timbales y bombo imitan el ulso constante mientras que los latillos tocan en síncoas. DO NOT DULICATE OR RERODUCE WITHOUT ERMISSION Ésta es la rimera ieza en la que he hecho un uso tan exlícito de elementos de la música oular, ero no es ciertamente la rimera vez que se ha hecho. Comositores del asado, esecialmente durante el barroco, escribieron suites que consisten de una serie de danzas como la alemanda, giga, sarabanda, etc. Estas danzas ueron muy oulares en las cortes euroeas: los nobles se reunían y bailaban con el acomañamiento de un equeño ensamble instrumental residente. Luego, algunos comositores decidieron emlear estas danzas y hacerlas un oco más soisticadas. Ésa era ustamente arte de mi intención al recoger los géneros musicales que he mencionado.
