3 PASTOR S PERSPECTIVE Dear Parishioners: Dr. Henry Allen Ironside was a great Bible teacher, pastor, and author of the twentieth century. One day, he was in a restaurant ordering his meal. Just as he was about to eat, a man walked up to his table and said, Do you mind if I sit down with you? Dr. Ironside said that it was quite all right, so the man sat down. As was his custom, Dr. Ironside bowed his head and said a silent word of thanks to God before he ate. When he lifted up his head, the man said to him, Do you have a headache? Ironside said, No, I don t. The man said, Well, is there anything wrong with your food? Ironside said, No, why? Well, the man said, I saw you sitting there with your head down, and I thought you must be sick, or there was something wrong with your food. Ironside replied, No, I was just simply thanking God as I always do before I eat. The man said, Oh, you re one of those, aren t you? Well, I never give thanks. I earn my money by the sweat of my brow, and I don t have to give thanks to anybody when I eat. I just start right in! Dr. Ironside said, Yes, you re just like my dog. That s what he does, too! It s a shame, isn t it, that people nowadays are so ungrateful? As Dr. Ironside pointed out, the act of giving thanks is the one thing that separates humans from animals. Saying thank you is the easiest, yet noblest, thing a person can do. And God wills that we do so, as St. Paul reminds us: In all circumstances give thanks, for this is the will of God for you in Christ Jesus (1 Thessalonians 5:18). Of course, an atheist wouldn t care about God s will. But why wouldn t a believer give thanks to God? I can think of a number of reasons. One of the most common reasons is because people are mad at God for what they think He did or didn t do. How did He allow that to happen? Where was He when this occurred? Why didn t He do that? We need to remember that God is not the author of evil. Instead, He often writes straight the crooked lines caused by our free will. No matter what happens, though, God knows best and He has our best interests at heart. Another reason people don t give thanks to God is because they think God has done nothing for them. These people believe that all that they are and have, they got it by themselves. They are solely and single-handedly self-made, so they owe nobody or God anything or any thanks. We can never forget that life itself is a gift. It is a miracle that we wake up every day. We should make the Psalmist s prayer our own: You formed my inmost being; you knit me in my mother s womb. I praise you, because I am wonderfully made; wonderful are your works! My very self you know (Psalm 139:13-14). The worst reason why people don t give thanks, though, is because they have taken God s blessings for granted. As the old adage goes, familiarity breeds contempt. These people consider the daily miracles being alive, good health, clean water, clear air, food, shelter as nothing worthy of thanks. Again, the Psalmist reminds us: It is good to give thanks to the Lord, to sing praise to your name, Most High, to proclaim your love at daybreak, your faithfulness in the night (Psalm 92:3-4). As we prepare to celebrate Thanksgiving Day this week, let us begin by counting our blessings and start thanking God, for his mercy endures forever (Psalm 136). Fr. 4 LIVE STATIONS OF THE CROSS In order to meditate more fully on the Passion and Death of our Savior on Good Friday, we are planning to act out the 14 Stations of the Cross as we process on the streets this year. Aixa Santiago ( ) and Lala Velazquez ( ) will be selecting people for the different characters of the Stations. If you are interested in playing a role or in helping out in some way, please contact either one of them directly. CHRISTMAS TREE LIGHTING CEREMONY Like last year, we are going to light up our church with Christmas trees, wreaths and garlands throughout the Christmas season. If you would like to memorialize a tree or wreath for yourself or a loved one, please contact the rectory. All are invited to our Tree Lighting Ceremony in front of the church on Sunday, December 3, at 6:00 PM. The trees and wreaths will be lit until Epiphany, January 7, MASS FOR BISHOP FORD Bishop Francis Xavier Ford, M.M. was born in Brooklyn in He joined the Maryknoll in 1912 and was ordained a priest in He arrived in Guangdong in 1918 and spent the rest of his life in China. He was appointed Apostolic Prefect of Meizhou in 1925 and was ordained a bishop in In 1950, the Communist government arrested Bishop Ford and tortured him until his death in The government scattered his body so that it could never be found. The Diocese of Brooklyn is praying that Bishop Ford would soon be canonized a saint. On Sunday, December 3, at 3:00 PM, in the Co-Cathedral of St. Joseph (856 Pacific Street, Brooklyn), there will be a Mass for the 100th Anniversary of the Ordination of Bishop Ford. All are invited. 5 PERSPECTIVA DEL PÁRROCO Queridos Feligreses: El Dr. Henry Allen Ironside fue un gran maestro de la Biblia, pastor y autor del siglo veinte. Un día, estaba en un restaurante ordenando su comida. Justo cuando estaba a punto de comer, un hombre se acercó a su mesa y dijo, le importa si me siento con usted? El Dr. Ironside dijo que estaba bien, por lo que el hombre se sentó. Como era su costumbre, el Dr. Ironside inclinó la cabeza y dijo unas palabras en silencio dando gracias a Dios antes de comer. Cuando levantó su cabeza, el hombre le dijo, tiene un dolor de cabeza? Ironside dijo, No, no. El hombre dijo: Pues bien, hay algo malo con su comida? Ironside dijo, No, por qué? Bueno, dijo el hombre, lo mire sentado allí con la cabeza hacia abajo, y pensé debe estar enfermo o hay algo malo con su comida. Ironside respondió: No, yo simplemente estaba agradeciendo a Dios como siempre lo hago antes de comer. El hombre dijo: Oh, eres uno de esos, no? Pues, yo nunca doy las gracias. Gano mi dinero con el sudor de mi frente, y no tengo que dar las gracias a nadie cuando cómo. Solo empiezo directamente! El Dr. Ironside dijo: Sí, eres como mi perro. Eso es lo que él hace también! Es una pena, no es ası, que las personas hoy en dıá sean tan ingratas? Como sen alo el Dr. Ironside, el acto de dar gracias es una cosa u nica que separa a los seres humanos de animales. Decir gracias es la cosa ma s fa cil, au n ma s noble, que una persona puede hacer. Y Dios quiere que lo hagamos, como nos recuerda San Pablo: En todas las circunstancias den gracias, porque esta es la voluntad de Dios para ti en Cristo Jesús (1 Tesalonicenses 5:18). Por supuesto, un ateo no le importa la voluntad de Dios. Pero, por que un creyente no le da gracias a Dios? Puedo pensar en un nu mero de razones. Una de las razones ma s comunes es porque las personas esta n enojadas con Dios por lo que ellos piensan que hizo o no hizo. Cómo permitió que sucediera eso? Dónde estaba El cuándo esto ocurrió? Por qué El no hizo eso? Tenemos que recordar que Dios no es el autor del mal. En vez, El a menudo escribe derecho en los renglones torcidos causados por nuestra libre voluntad. Sin embargo, pase lo que pase, Dios sabe mejor y tiene nuestros mejores intereses en el corazo n. Otra razo n que la gente no da gracias a Dios es porque piensan que Dios no ha hecho nada por ellos. Estas personas creen que todo lo que son y tienen, lo consiguieron por sı mismos. Ellos son u nicamente por sı mismos y hechos por si solos, por eso no le deben las gracias a nadie, ni nada a Dios. No podemos olvidar que la vida misma es un regalo. Es un milagro que despertamos cada dıá. Debemos hacer nuestra la oracio n del salmista: Formaste mi ser más íntimo; Me tejiste en el vientre de mi madre. Te alabo, porque me has hecho maravillosamente; tus obras son maravillosas! Y a mí mismo, Tú conoces (Salmo 139:13-14). Sin embargo, la peor razo n por que la gente no da gracias, es porque han tomado las bendiciones de Dios por concedidas. Como dice el viejo adagio, la familiaridad engendra desprecio. Estas personas consideran los milagros diarios estar vivos, buena salud, agua potable, aire limpio, alimento, refugio... como nada digno de agradecimiento. Una vez ma s, el salmista nos recuerda: es bueno dar gracias al Señor, cantar alabanzas a Tu nombre, Altísimo, para proclamar Tu amor al amanecer, Tu idelidad en la noche (Salmo 92:3-4). Mientras nos preparamos para celebrar el Día de Acción de Gracias esta semana, empecemos contando nuestras bendiciones y comenzar agradecer a Dios, porque su misericordia perdura para siempre (Salmo 136).
