DESIGN OF A CONTROL SYSTEM FOR A FLIGHT SIMULATOR PLATFORM Author: Llopis Bernat, Juan. Directors: Ramón Rodríguez Pecharromán, Ramón. Zamora Macho, Juan Luís. Alexandres Fernández, Sadot. Pérez Ramírez, Carlos. Collaborating Entity: Simloc Research, S.L. PROJECT S SUMMARY INTRODUCTION Nowadays, to accumulate real flight hours is highly expensive, and that is the reason why the flight simulator is the perfect chance to offer a very advantageous service. A simulator flight is a system, which tries to copy, or simulate, the experience of piloting an aircraft in the most precise and realistic way possible. There are many different kinds of flight simulators such as videogames, copies of a real size cabin built up in a hydraulic actuator (or electro-mechanic), controlled by modern systems of control. Flight simulators allow the pilot to gain experience without the risks, the time and the costs associated with training with the real aircraft. It does such thing by using the real infrastructure. A regular pilot can learn the essential abilities to pilot an aircraft thanks to his experience with the flight simulator. The student will be able to make mistakes in a simulated environment and to learn from those mistakes without suffering the fatal consequences of his acts. His ability to make decisions and his skills piloting an aircraft will improve, resulting in more security and efficiency.
Therefore, this project s goal is to design a control system for a flight simulator platform. The goal will be achieved by creating the software that will manage the exact position and speed of the platform s engines with regards the simulated ones in the flight simulator. METHODOLOGY Figure 1: Project s Diagram[1][2] The project can be seen as composed of different operating processes. The interaction of these operating processes allows managing the control of the flight s simulator platform. The Motion Platform Designer uses the Microsoft Fight Stimulator X to obtain the platform s position parameters. From the Motion Platform Designer the three positions of the three platform s motors are sent towards the control-managing program, which is the Visual Basic 6. The Microcode Studio is responsible for programming the microprocessor PIC18F255O. That microprocessor has been programmed in Basic for the reading of the three potentiometers, which will be the motors positions in the platform, and for the data sending towards the Visual Basic 6 program. The Visual Basic 6 is responsible for receiving the potentiometers position data via USB from the microprocessor, and for receiving simulated platform motors position. In
addition, the Visual Basic 6 controls the frequency that needs to be sent to the frequency inverters, which adjusts the engine rotation speeds of the platform. RESULTS A platform s axle prototype has been constructed in order to check how the axle works. Figure 2: Platform s axle prototype The system s plant has been carried out with the platform s axle prototype shown above in order to adjust the PID control used. Figure 3:PID control block diagram A code that carries out the PID control of the frequency has been developed in the Visual Basic 6. The PID control has as an input the simulated motor s position and
as an output the platform s motor position. The command signal will be the frequency in which the engine will have to move. Figure 4: Visual Basic 6.0 interface Visual Basic 6.0 interface allows checking the USB conection, the potentiometers values in every instance and the motors simulated platform s position. CONCLUSIONS The control of the frequency sent to the frequency inverters has been accomplished in order to control the position of the motor s platform. It would be interesting for this project to build up a platform so the control developed can be implemented. It would also be very useful to create a F-18 cabin to be able to commercialize with the hours using the aircraft simulator. But in order to do so, the organism needs to be authorized.
