Estimados estudiantes de español, DERRUMBANDO FRONTERAS SEÑOR MOLINA, SPANISH TEACHER ESPAÑOL III (FSN43): Cuál es la calidad de vida en nuestro mundo? amolina@erhsnyc.net Bienvenidos al tercer nivel de español! Welcome to Level III Spanish for the 2016-2017 school year! In this class we re going to be looking at different aspects of culture, communication, and grammar in the Spanish-speaking world looking at issues that affect the quality of life in Spanish speaking countries. Additionally, we will learn about influential people in Spanish and Latin American history. We will investigate these issues and present them as they are presented in news programs or newscasts to add more creativity to our investigative methods. In order to maximize our reading and listening comprehension skills we will use various Spanish sources from around the world. Short stories and poems will be incorporated into our class so that we get a better understanding of the culture and the language through literary sources. By the end of the year you will be able to talk about yourself in a social setting, provide and obtain information, talk about past and future events, and express opinions. Additionally, you will be more than ready to take the Languages Other Than English (LOTE) Exam in June. The LOTE Exam grade will count towards your class average. We have a lot of material to cover but I m sure that we ll have fun doing so. You will be an active member on the growing list of Spanish speakers worldwide. Perhaps the word that best describes our Spanish experience this year is the word active. Our curriculum is largely designed to accommodate group activity and group interaction so that you become an active participant. However, our focus on group work does not mean that you will not have the opportunity to demonstrate your individual abilities. The better you master your individual Spanish skills, the better an active member you will be in our Spanish experience. In addition, the better prepared you are for Spanish class, the more effective our experience will be. You must always bring your material to class. Your assignments will come from workbooks, textbooks and from additional online and/or digital Spanish material. We will be moving at a quick pace through the material so it is extremely important that you come to class prepared and stay on task while we conduct our class. I am extremely confident that we will have a great Spanish experience. Please take a look at the grading policy and a few additional guidelines below and then sign the agreement once you are clear on the overall Spanish class guidelines. I am looking forward to working with you! Essential Questions for Learning a Language: Why is circumlocution important in communication? If a person who knows two languages is worth two people, why don t we learn more languages besides English? How is the structure of a language connected to cultural perspective? Requirements for Spanish Class Everyone is required to have a pen or pencil with them, a binder or a notebook, and a folder for class notes and for handouts. It is important that you have access to a Spanish-English dictionary (book or online) in class and outside of class. In class you will have dictionaries but you will also be able to access online dictionaries through the use of your personal electronic device (i.e. cell phone, ipad, Tablet, laptop, etc.).
A note on the use of online translators (i.e., Google Translate): While students are encouraged to use online dictionaries (i.e. WordReference) to look up individual words or small phrases when they are completing projects, assignments or any other Spanish work, it is absolutely forbidden to use websites for mass translations. Mass translations include entire sentences or paragraphs. Use of online translators for mass translations can lead to potential academic and/or disciplinary action. Grading Policy Projects/Tests 50% Quizzes 30% Engagement/Participation 20% Tests/Projects Tests will always be announced. They will test vocabulary, grammar and cultural aspects of the Spanish class material. Projects will be assigned in advance and it is important that they be completed on time. Each day a project is handed in late, it will lose one letter grade. Projects will be done mostly in groups because in the real world, solutions are best found when working together with others. There will be individual projects but most of our work will encourage group activity. The LOTE Exam grade will count towards your Spanish class grade at the end of the school year. Quizzes You will have periodic announced and/or unannounced quizzes. If you miss a quiz you are responsible for setting up a time with me to make it up. Optional Homework Assignments Homework assignments will be optional and they will not be graded. I will occasionally post or share activities that you can complete to practice your Spanish but you will not be officially assigned homework in Spanish class. If you choose to complete these activities, I can give you feedback, if you request feedback. These optional assignments will be posted in Google Classroom or on the homework section of our school website at: www.erhsnyc.org. Engagement/Participation Engagement/Participation is very important because it sets the tone for our classes. Since you will not be required to complete homework for Spanish class, it is important that you demonstrate your knowledge of the material during class activities and/or discussions. We will be using the School-wide Expectations for Engagement (SEE) as a foundation for our engagement/participation in Spanish class. Below, please review a few additional, but extremely important class rules. 1. All school rules apply to Spanish class. This includes dress code, lateness and absences; 2. Be respectful of your classmates- we are learning a new language and no one is to ridicule others; 3. Be respectful of the Spanish language and of Spanish/Latin American culture;
