Three sides are necessary to make a triangle and three ingredients are necessary to cause a fire. These are heat, oxygen and fuel. If any one of these three sides is missing, there can be no fire. Heat The first side of the fire triangle can come from many sources. It can be generated by sparks from welding or cutting operations, discarded cigarette butts, overloading of electrical equipment, frayed wiring, and/or hot exhaust pipes to name a few. Fuel The second side of the fire triangle is fuel. It may be a liquid, such as gasoline or solvents; a solid, such as paper or wood; or a gas, such as propane. Oxygen The third side of the fire triangle is oxygen, which is necessary to sustain a fire. This is one side of the triangle we can t do much about as air, which contains oxygen, is usually present. Heat, fuel and oxygen must be in the proper proportion for fire to occur. It is possible to have these three ingredients without causing a fire. For example, there may not be enough heat or oxygen to ignite the fuel and cause it to burn. Eliminating the triangle If you remove any one of the three ingredients, you will prevent or extinguish a fire. You can prevent fire by doing the following: 1. Maintaining a neat and clean work area, thus preventing an accumulation of combustibles 2. Putting oily or paint-soaked rags in approved covered metal containers 3. Observing all No Smoking signs 4. Keeping all combustible materials away from furnaces, hot work or other sources of ignition 5. Reporting any fire hazards you, personally, cannot eliminate. This includes electrical hazards, which are the source of many fires 6. Arranging temporary heating devices so that tarps and other combustibles won t blow into them When you know the angles When you know the angles, it s easier to prevent and control fires. Remember the fire triangle: heat, oxygen and fuel. When you find these three ingredients present, take heed. A fire could be in the making. Un incendio se puede comparar a un triángulo. Tres lados son necesarios para completar un triángulo y tres ingredientes son necesarios para causar un incendio. Éstos son calor, oxígeno y combustible. Si uno de estos tres lados falta, no se hace un incendio. Calor En el primer lado del triángulo existen varias fuentes. Puede ser generado por chispas de operaciones de soldadura o del corte, de extremos de cigarrillo desechados, de sobrecargar equipo eléctrico, de cable raído, y/o de tubos de escape calientes para nombrar algunos. Combustible El segundo lado del triángulo del fuego es combustible. Puede ser un líquido, tal como gasolina o solventes; un sólido, tal como papel o madera; o un gas, tal como propano. Oxígeno El tercer lado del triángulo de incendio es el oxígeno, que es necesario para sostener un fuego. Éste es un lado del triángulo que no podemos controlar mucho, el aire, que contiene el oxígeno, está generalmente presente. El calor, el combustible y el oxígeno deben estar en la proporción apropiada para que el incendio ocurra. Es posible tener estos tres ingredientes sin causar un incendio. Por ejemplo, puede no haber bastante calor u oxígeno para encender el combustible y para hacerlo quemar. Eliminación del triángulo Si quitas uno de los tres ingredientes, prevendrás o extinguirás un incendio. Puedes prevenir el incendio haciendo lo siguiente: 1. Mantener un área de trabajo aseada y limpia, así previniendo una acumulación de combustibles 2. Poner los trapos aceitosos o pintura-empapados en envases cubiertos aprobados de metal 3. Observar las reglas de no fumar 4. Almacenar todos los materiales combustibles lejos de los hornos, del trabajo caliente o de otras fuentes de ignición 5. Reporta riesgos de incendios que tu no puedas eliminar. Esto incluye los peligros eléctricos, que son la fuente de muchos fuegos 6.
