AIR CONDITIONING OF AN AIRPORT IN GUADALAJARA Author: Veuthey Mordini, Álvaro Director: Martín Serrano, Javier Collaborating Institution: ICAI Universidad Pontificia Comillas. PROJECT SUMMARY The purpose of this Project is to analyze the air conditioning system of an airport in Guadalajara, Spain, establishing the legal and technical conditions determined for those types of buildings. The air cooling system will be designed for the entire year; this is why the heating and the cooling system will be calculated. It will seek to meet the comfort needs of users and health and hygiene conditions within the building. The airport has four floors. In this project only two of them will be analyzed: the ground floor and the first floor. On the ground floor are located the arrival halls, general halls and information, ticket sales and car rental desks. On the first floor are the check-in lobbies, flight departure areas, as well as other counters. The total area to be acclimatized is 14,278 m 2. The airport has been subdivided by zones for the individual study of its thermal loads in winter and summer, as well as its air conditioning system. The first part of the project is to calculate the thermal loads for summer and winter time. When calculating thermal loads in the summer, the transmission, lighting, occupancy and installed loads must be taken into account. In the case of winter loads, only transmission losses will be considered, because all other loads are considered favorable when heating a building. In both cases, the most unfavorable times and dates will be taken into account. After obtaining the thermal needs for each room, we proceed to calculate the rates for flow, return and air ventilation. The flow has specific temperature and humidity conditions to ensure the comfort requirements. The ventilation flows are necessary to
comply with hygiene and health conditions within the building. These are determined by the level of occupation and activity. With the flow rate and the heating and cooling powers, the air conditioning equipment to be installed is dimensioned. Fan-Coil units will be installed in areas with small surfaces and low thermal loads. For rooms with higher thermal requirements, air conditioners will be used. Fan-Coil units will be located in the false ceiling of each floor. The installed units will be Cassette type of installation of four tubes (4T) by the Termoven brand. For their part, the air conditioners will be installed on the deck. These will be air conditioners of the CLA series, also supplied by the Termoven company. It is required to design a network of air conduits that carry the treated air flow from the air conditioners on the roof to the premises in the building. It is also necessary to consider the return ducts that bring the air from the premises to the air conditioners. The dimensions of the ducts has been calculated as a function of the flow of air they carry, without exceeding a velocity of 7 m/s or a loss of load greater than 0.12 mmca per meter of conduit. The different ducts have been selected according to the diameter of the air tube supplier. Subsequently the diffusers and grids are dimensioned. The air is driven to the premises by diffusers and absorbed by grids. A load loss of 25 Pa or a noise level greater than 40 dba must not be exceeded. The selected equipment are rotating diffusers of the VDW 825 x 72 model and return grids of the AR 825 x 125 type, both by the Trox Technik supplier. The equipment s placement is also important, as it is necessary to take into account a symmetrical distribution and an adequate separation. The items responsible for driving and returning these air flows are the return fans and the air conditioners return themselves. The next step is to design the pipe system. In order for air conditioners and Fan-Coils to be able to deliver air to the set conditions, they must receive adequate water flow. A hot water system for the winter and a cold water system for the summer. The water pipes are dimensioned according to the flow running through them and taking into consideration that the water does not flow faster than 2 m/s nor has a pipe loss greater than 20 mmca per pipe meter.
On the other hand, it is calculated the loss of load that the fluid undergoes in its way due to friction, cornering, equipment, etc. Only the point with the highest pressure drop will be calculated, since when the pump is able to overcome that pressure, it will be able to overcome any other path. To boost the water flow is necessary to install pumps, which will be housed in the building s basement. Four pumps will be installed, two per floor. One of them will boost the hot water and the other the cold one for each level. The pumps are selected based on the flow rate they have to drive and the height they have to supply. The supplier chosen will be Bombas Saci. To generate the heat and cold required by the air conditioning units, it is necessary to install boilers and refrigeration units. These units are dimensioned according to the thermal loads of the building. In the winter it is necessary to supply a power of 666.7 kw to heat the water, so an ADI CD 750 boiler of the Adisa company will be installed. During the summer the thermal demands are greater. It is necessary to provide the airport with 1687.7 kw so that it can supply the air conditioners and Fan-Coils. Two parallel Carrier 30XWH-1002 refrigeration units will be installed in order to distribute the load. It makes sense that the summer thermal loads are greater than the winter loads, since although Guadalajara has a harsh winter, it is well known that Spain has more intense climatological conditions during summer than winter. Finally, the economic budget for the airport has been calculated. This figure amounts to 2,018,307 (two million eighteen thousand three hundred and seven Euros). It is an important part of the total budget that involves building a construction of such magnitude, but essential to make it exploitable. To avoid the system stopping due to failure of any of the components, parallel reserve elements will be connected. This way there will be 4 other pumps of the same model installed in the engine room and another boiler next to the main operating boiler. Regarding the refrigeration groups and due to its great economic cost, only one unit will be placed in parallel to the other two already operating. All the drawings for the airport are attached at the end of the document, detailing the network of air supply and return ducts, grilles, diffusers and hot and cold water piping systems.
All elements and calculations have been made in compliance with the RITE regulations, and comply with the rules of the Terms of Reference. The catalogs of the different suppliers that have been used to select the items are attached in the appendix.
