Annual Report & Letter to Parishioners 2016-2017 Pastor s Letter Dear Students and Parishioners: I am pleased to present the St. Mark s University Parish annual report, which is a summary and snapshot of not only our parish financial condition, but also of ministry and outreach statistics. I am so very grateful to God for your continued efforts to make our parish a true home, a sanctuary, and place of worship. As we continue to move forward, we call to mind and heart the words of Pope Francis, who reminds us that we are united together as a people not in a sterile uniformity, but rather through a wealth of differences and experiences inherited from history and culture (General Audience of Pope Francis, Jan 24, 2018). This is my continued prayer for our student parish: that we will always seek to live out our faith together, while respecting the differences in language, culture and political life that are part and parcel of a healthy and growing family. This year, we will begin demolition and reconstruction for Phase I of our parish building project which includes the addition of a small hall, kitchen, renewed office and restroom spaces, and façade remodel of the exterior office and rectory space. Phase II will commence when we raise a little more cash, and will include a new entrance and façade remodel of the exterior of the church itself. My sincerest thanks to our student leaders, our volunteer corps of lay ministers, our auxiliary priests, our finance council and our small, but eager staff who make our parish a place to begin, maintain and end our earthly journey in Christ, Our Lord. ST. MARK S UNIVERISTY PARISH STUDENT REPORT I am happy to report that the student community at St. Mark s is growing in size and depth in their relationships with Jesus Christ. The student mass at St. Mark s has been consistently growing as we continue to meet new students each week. There are almost 150 students involved in small group bible studies, most of which are led by students. Additionally, there are about 50 students involved in one-on-one discipleship, where they are learning how to take their faith out on campus to evangelize. This year s group of students has seen an enormous increase in the quality of community, as well as the desire to expand that community throughout Isla Vista and beyond. Our FOCUS (Fellowship of Catholic University Students) missionaries have greatly contributed to helping this community to grow. This year s five missionaries have taught students how to run small group bible studies, and lead others to Christ. Additionally, they have taken up men s and women s groups this year which have strengthened the brotherhood and sisterhood between the students. We began the year strong with the annual SEARCH Retreat which is entirely student led. During this retreat the 45 students that attended were able to listen to talks given by various student leaders, attend adoration, and receive the sacrament of confession amongst other fun activities. The friendships built on this retreat have continued to last throughout the year, and have contributed to the strong sense of community at St. Mark s. The students at St. Mark s continue to live their faith out on the UCSB campus. Many students are involved in activities such as Greek life, campus organizations, and interfaith outreach. Students at St. Mark s work to serve others by writing for campus websites, being residential assistants, and getting involved with charitable organizations. I am confident that God will continue to work through Our Blessed Mother to bring students back to the Church. Please keep us in your prayers. La Misa estudiantil en San Marcos ha estado creciendo constantemente a medida que continuamos encontrando nuevos estudiantes cada semana. Casting the Light of Faith Capital Campaign Update It s a very exciting time for us at St. Mark s university parish; we have reached the point where we will begin Phase I construction. Armstrong Associates have been selected as contractors and construction will begin in March, 2018. Construction should take between six and eight months. Work is now underway to move the offices and Fr. Love to a new location until construction is finished. I would like to thank you in advance for your patience during this construction phase. Our fund raising efforts are on-going, and cash and pledges amount to approximately $1,730,000. We will continue to accept new pledges and donations as we still have an overall goal of $2,000,000. If you have not made a pledge or a donation, consider doing so! I would like to thank everyone who has made a pledge and your continued payments on those pledges. I would like to thank Cecelia Uribe of the Archdiocese of Los Angles for her support, her patience and her guidance through this project. I would also like to thank our architect Tom Ochsner and his team for his hard work. Lastly I would like to thank all the parishioners of St. Mark s university parish, it has been a long process and you have stuck with us through it all. I am looking forward to having the construction completed and having a place for us to come together to give praise and glory to God, grow the faith and to service the future of the Church. Page 6 Annual Report & Letter Letter from the Finance Council Chair Dear St. Mark s Parishioners, Here is a summary of our income statement for St. Mark s fiscal year ended June 30th, 2017. Operating Revenue is from our weekly cash and envelope collections, sacramental donations, and a subsidy from the Archdiocese, along with a variety of smaller revenue items. It does not include any of the donations toward our building project; which are reported separately. Our most important revenue source is our weekly envelopes, cash, maintenance, and sacramental collections from you. These collections total 74% of our income and the remaining 26% of our funding comes the Together in Mission program; primarily as a direct recipient of program funds and to a lesser degree by our parish exceeding its annual Together in Mission goals. Parish revenue increased 10% compared to 2016 so thank you very much for your support and generosity. Parish Expenses decreased 8% this year and includes Parish Staffing of the office and rectory, janitorial and gardening, plus required health benefits, taxes etc. The most important expense is the ministry expenses which brings the Catholic faith to life for our students and other members of St. Mark s. This includes FOCUS ministry, music, Search and education program expenses. With a 10% increase in revenue and an 8% decrease in overall expenses our parish had a small financial gain of $18,779. This profit reverses several years of losses and helps to restore our reserves which we expect to need in the next year while the construction project impacts our operations and finances. The finance council will continue to work with Father Love to ensure our financial stability in 2018. Thank you for your financial support.
