COOKIES FOR PRISONERS KAIROS PRISON MINISTRY RETREAT - Nov. 8-11, 2018 The Kairos Prison Team from St. Francis is facilitating a Kairos retreat at Ridgeland Correctional Institute. We are asking for your help to provide all inmates with fresh-baked cookies. Our goal is to take 5000 dozen cookies into the prison to give to all of the inmates. Please help us meet this huge goal by baking or buying cookies and placing them in the marked boxes in the Narthex by Tuesday, November 6, at Noon. Cookies must be oatmeal, chocolate chip, peanut butter or sugar. Please NO powdered sugar, fruit, icing, or nuts (peanut butter cookies are okay) in or on cookies. For more information or to tour the school, please contact JPII is Hitting the High Marks As a new school in a competitive market, John Paul II Catholic School has focused on expanding its curriculum to increase the academic success of its students. A primary measure of that success is national standardized tests such as the ACT and SAT. The attached graphic indicates the incredible achievement of JPII s Class of 2018 on the ACT. Last year s seniors earned an average composite ACT score of 25.6, which is a staggering 7.3 points higher than the South Carolina state average of 18.3, said JPII Principal Walt Dupre. Our students scored highest in the critical area of reading, averaging a reading score of 27.8, which is 9.2 points higher than the state average of Success on the ACT, as well as other factors, allowed JPII graduates to enroll in high-quality colleges and universities such as New York University, Catholic University, American University, Savannah College of Art and Design, Furman University, Wofford College, Clemson University, and University of South Carolina Honors College. Furthermore, based on the ACT college readiness benchmark, the graduates of JPII have a much greater chance of being successful in college compared to their peers. ACT college readiness benchmarks indicate that 95% of our students are prepared for their college English courses compared with only 42% of students who attend public schools in the state. Overall, nearly half of our graduates have been deemed college ready by ACT compared to 14% of the public school students in South Carolina, explained Mr. Dupre. 6 Memory Matters is a local not-for-profit center of excellence which improves the quality of life for persons with dementia and their families, providing resources, support, respite and adult day services with compassion and dignity. Memory Matters invites you to stop by its Ministry Fair table today to learn more about educational and volunteer opportunities. The Purple Angel Project training is a 1-hour dementia sensitivity program to help you recognize the signs and symptoms of dementia and equip you with tools to be able to respond appropriately. Training sign-up is available today with two dates to choose from. If you are interested in volunteering, there are plenty of opportunities with Memory Matters. Whether you want to serve in our program for our events, clerical duties, or health fairs, we have a spot for you. REFLEXIÓN DOMINICAL En nuestra vida diaria decimos, y lo decimos con verdad, que nuestra bondad se demuestra haciendo obras buenas: obras son amores y no buenas razones. El árbol bueno da frutos buenos y el árbol malo, frutos malos. Por sus frutos se conocen los árboles. Lo importante aquí es que entendamos qué es lo que hace buena a una obra. Y lo que aquí nos dice Jesús es que es siempre el amor a Dios y al prójimo el que determina la bondad de nuestras obras buenas. Es decir, que una obra legalmente buena no es moralmente buena si no está inspirada directamente en el amor a Dios y al prójimo. Podemos rezar mucho, y hacer muchas limosnas, y cumplir fielmente los mandamientos; si no es el amor a Dios y al prójimo el que inspira y motiva nuestras buenas acciones, estas acciones no son moralmente buenas, no nos salvan. Los fariseos se fijaban sobre todo en el cumplimiento legal y externo de las obras que estaban mandadas en la Ley; Jesús prefiere que nos fijemos en el amor con que hacemos estas obras. Porque al final, como nos repetirá frecuentemente San Pablo, sólo nos salvará el amor, el amor a Dios y al prójimo. Oremos para que en nuestra comunidad de San Francisco cada día aumente el amor y la fraternidad en tre nosotros. 9 Letanías a María (XL Parte) INTENCIÓN DEL PAPA FRANCISCO Para este mes de noviembre, el Papa Francisco pide rezar por la paz, para que el lenguaje del corazón y del diálogo prevalezca siempre sobre el lenguaje de las armas. Presentamos en esta edición la cuadragésima y última parte de nuestra catequésis acerca de las Letanías a la Virgen María: REINA DE LAS FAMILIAS Es un título que faltaba en las letanías y que Juan Pablo II se encargo de añadir. Las familias tenían necesidad de una Reina. Y una Reina fuerte, que fuera parte de una familia, abogada y defensora contra un enemigo abiertamente declarado contra las familias, el Demonio. Hoy tiene el maléfico pensamiento de destruir la familia. Y ya ha hecho bastante mal. Pero se le enfrenta su eterna rival, María Santísima. Todos somos miembros de una familia y todos queremos que las familias se sostengan en el amor y en la unidad. Invoquemos a la Reina de la Familia. REINA DE LA PAZ La imagen de la Virgen María bajo la Advocación de Nuestra Señora de Fátima, continúa visitando los hogares de las familias de la comunidad de San Francisco por el Mar.
