1 C. L. Smith Chess Club Tuesdays 2:50-3:45 C. L. Smith Library The C. L. Smith Chess Club will start Tuesday September 13th. Players and parents at any level of experience that are serious about wanting to learn or improve existing skills are welcome. Maximum 20 students (because of limited sets and boards). Studies have shown that students exposed to the discipline, patience, and creative problem solving involved in chess often see improvements in all areas of their schoolwork. Chess is a standard part of the curriculum in many countries for this reason. Chess is also a ton of fun! Students will be required to participate in at least one of the three local scholastic chess tournaments held in the fall, winter, and spring. Smith Parents, I would like to invite your family to attend a very special evening at C.L. Smith. Thursday, October 6th, we will host a Title I Family Night from 5:30 6:00 PM in the Music Room, followed by Family Math Night in the Pavilion from 6:00 7:00 PM. Pizza and drinks will be provided. Title I is a federally funded program designed for students who are not yet performing at grade level in reading, writing, or math. We receive approximately $70,000 per school year to provide services for our Title I students and their families to help children achieve at grade level. Starting at 5:30 PM, parents will meet in the Music Room to learn about what we have to offer students this year at C.L. Smith. Family Math Night begins at 6:00 PM in the Pavilion. This is an opportunity for all student mathematicians to play math games with their family, persevere in problem solving and share mathematical strategies. I hope you will take advantage of this fun and informative night for your family. Pizza and drinks will be provided from 5:30 6:15 PM at the lunch tables. Every student who attends will receive a raffle ticket. Please return the RSVP below to your child s teacher by Friday, September 30th, so we can be sure to have enough pizza and drinks.
