Woe is me, I am doomed! For I am a man of unclean lips, he said aloud. Likewise, with his empty fishing nets dramatically filled at Jesus instruction, Peter fell to his knees and cried out, Depart from me, Lord, for I am a sinful man. Next, Peter got up. He docked his boats then left to follow Jesus. Isaiah also had a dramatic change of heart. When he heard the Lord say, Whom shall I send? Who will go for us? Isaiah answered, Here I am, send me. We are summoned daily by the Risen Lord. We are reminded of the saving power of the gospel and know in our heart of hearts that, as St. Paul wrote, believing in anything else won t lead to anything. What will it take for you to move past your sinfulness? What will it take for you to get off your knees? 5 February 10, 2013 St. Philip Benizi, O.S.M Catholic Community Page 5 This Wednesday we begin the season of Holy Lent. Lent is a special time of prayer, penance, sacrifice, and good works in preparation of the celebration of Easter. In the desire to renew the liturgical practices of the, The Constitution on the Sacred Liturgy of Vatican Council II stated, "The two elements which are especially characteristic of Lent -- the recalling of baptism or the preparation for it, and penance -- should be given greater emphasis in the liturgy and in liturgical catechesis. It is by means of them that the prepares the faithful for the celebration of Easter, while they hear God's word more frequently and devote more time to prayer" (no. 109). The word Lent itself is derived from the Anglo-Saxon words lencten, meaning "Spring," and lenctentid, which literally means not only "Springtide" but also was the word for "March," the month in which the majority of Lent falls. As we prepare for Lent, we look for ways to keep Lent as a time of reflection, prayer and drawing closer to the Lord. To aid you in this holy task, the parish will be using Keeping the Seasons devotional. This simple devotional which begins today and ends on Pentecost will aid each of us in keeping Lent prayerfully and reflectively. Copies of Keeping the Seasons are in Spanish and English and will be inserted into the Sunday bulletin each week until Pentecost. You can place your copy of Keeping the Seasons in prayer book or Bible, on your home prayer altar or on the door of your refrigerator or wherever it can be easily seen and often used. I pray that using this devotional and all of your Lenten practices will draw you closer to the Lord, His Holy, and others that we may celebrate an Easter of joy and hope. Happy Lent. Also, in today s bulletin, you will find a copy of Catholic Update. This monthly magazine has helped Catholics for many years grow deeper in their knowledge of our Catholic faith. Printed only in English, it is a great means to help each of us learn and relearn the theology of our Catholic faith. You will find a copy of Catholic Update once a month in the bulletin. Don, OSM Este miércoles comenzamos la temporada de la Santa Cuaresma. La Cuaresma es un tiempo especial de oración, penitencia, sacrificio y buenas obras en preparación de la celebración de la Pascua. En el deseo de renovar las prácticas litúrgicas de la Iglesia, La Constitución sobre la Sagrada Liturgia del Concilio Vaticano II declaró: "Los dos elementos que son especialmente característicos de la Cuaresma - el recuerdo del bautismo o la preparación para ello, y de penitencia - se debe dar un mayor énfasis en la liturgia y en la catequesis litúrgica. RITE OF SENDING When a parish has candidates who will receive baptism and full communion at the Easter Vigil Mass they are presented first to the community and then to the bishop. Our adults, teenagers, children and their sponsors participating in the Rite of Christian Initiation preparation and are ready for the Easter Vigil. They will be celebrating the Rite of Sending during the Mass on Sunday, Feb. 17. Please remember to pray for them now and during the time before Easter. Year of Faith Tidbits #7 One of the key teaching of the Second Vatican Council is: A strong emphasis on community, leading to active involvement in the world, emphasizing our active role in transforming the world into the reign of God.
