Psalm 122:1-2 First Sunday of Advent In his speech on the end of time (Matthew 24, and Mark 13, 1-2) the Evangelist compares the announcement of the downfall of Jerusalem (the destruction of the Temple) to the end of the world. It is appropriate to recall this passage of the Gospel in today s liturgy as we begin the period of Advent. Advent calls to mind the two comings of the Lord Christ has already come, He will come again. While we are awaiting His return, Christ does not really take leave of the world. Advent reminds us to walk in the footsteps of Jesus. He is our light, says the prophet Isaiah. While we await His second coming, the Lord comes to us in many ways. His light will enlighten our path so that we may recognize Him in the person in need to whom we should give assistance. As Jesus says, Whenever you will have done for the least of my brothers, you will have done for me. (Matthew 25, 40) Primer Domingo de Adviento En su charla acerca del fin del tiempo (Mateo24, y Marco 13, 1-2) el Evangelista compara la caída de Israel (la destrucción del Templo) con el fin del mundo. Es apropiado recordar este pasaje del Evangelio en la liturgia de hoy cuando comenzamos el periodo de Adviento. La temporada de Adviento nos recuerda de las dos venidas del Señor Cristo ya ha llegado, El vendrá de nuevo. Cuando esperamos Su retorno, Cristo en realidad nunca nos ha dejado. Adviento nos recuerda que debemos caminar en las pisadas de Jesús. El es nuestra luz, dice el profeta Isaías. Mientras esperamos su segunda venida, el Señor viene a nosotros en distintas maneras. Su luz alumbra nuestro caminar para que lo podamos reconocer en nuestros momentos de necesidad. Jesús nos dice: En verdad les digo que, cuando lo hicieron con alguno de los mas pequeños de estos mis hermanos, me lo hicieron a mi. D ici son retour, le Christ ne s est pas retiré du monde. Il est toujours présent parmi nous. «Marchons à la lumière du Seigneur» exhorte le prophète Isaïe. En attendant son retour à la fin des temps, le Seigneur vient à nous de différentes façons. La lumière nous est donnée pour nous permettre de le reconnaître en la personne d un démuni auquel nous procurons notre aide: «Toutes les fois que vous l avez fait à l un de ces petits qui sont mes frères, dit Jésus, c est à moi que vous l avez fait» (Evangile de saint Matthieu 25, 40) So will it be also at the coming of the Son of Man. 3 CCHD COLLECTION This weekend there will be a second collection for the Catholic Campaign for Human Development. CCHD helps to fund projects such as educational improvements, community development and lowincome housing. Please give generously for this worthy cause. MEDITATION IN MIND Our Christian Meditation Group, which meets Monday evenings at 6:30 has drawn the attention of Catholic New York, which lists it as one of the four groups in the Archdiocese meeting for this purpose. The others are St. Michael the Archangel in the Bronx, and Holy Trinity and St. Thomas More in Manhattan. ST FRANCIS XAVIER Tuesday, December 3, is the Feast of St. Francis Xavier, who was the first Jesuit missionary and co-founder of the Society of Jesus. He was influential in the spread of Catholicism, mostly in India, and led extensive missions into Asia. He was born in 1506 and died in He was beatified in 1619 and canonized in MORE ON MATN Last week s bulletin contained a report on the Making All Things New project of the Archdiocese, which is to lead to a realignment and consolidation of parishes. A core team has been formed at St. Gregory s to participate in this process and to analyze and report on the strengths of our parish and areas that could be improved. This is the reason for the surveys that we have asked you to complete and return this weekend. As the process moves forward, we will keep you informed of developments and ways in which you can participate. GIVE ME THE GRACE... As a young writer, Flannery O Connor contemplated the mysteries of faith in a remarkable book called A Prayer Journal. Here are excerpts from that book: Give me the grace, dear God, to adore you with the awe that fills your priests when they sacrifice the Lamb on our altars. Give me the grace, dear God, to See the bareness and the misery of the places where you are not adored but desecrated.... My mind is in a little box, dear God, down inside other boxes.....please let some light shine out of all the things around me.... If I could only hold God in my mind. If I could only just think of him... ON EXHIBIT See the current edition of Catholic New York for news of current exhibitions of interest.
