Psalm 22:26 Twentieth Sunday in Ordinary Time In everyday life, the food we eat provides us with energy and the chemical constituents that we need to stay in good health. What does Jesus mean when he declares: My flesh is true food, and my blood is true drink? (John 6:55) For Jesus, the true food and the true drink are not intended for life in the flesh, but are rather for eternal life. Jesus becomes more precise when he says: Whoever eats this bread will live forever. (John 6:58) When we celebrate the Eucharist, we repeat what happened at the Last Supper. At the Last Supper, Jesus says to his apostles: Take and eat, this is my body. (Matthew 26:26) Do this in memory of me. (Luke 22:19) Jesus wishes also that we share in his life. Whoever eats my flesh and drinks my blood dwells in me and I in him. (John 6:56) To eat the flesh of Christ and to drink his blood represent the most sublime rite of the Christian faith. Let us approach with confidence the one who invites us to his table. Amen, amen, I saw to you, unless you eat of the Son of Man and drink his blood you shall not have life within you. For whosoever eats my flesh, and drinks my blood, shall have eternal life, and I will raise him on the last day. For my flesh is true food and my blood is true drink. Whoever eats my flesh and drinks my blood have eternal life. Just as the living Father sent me and I have life because of the Father, so also the one who feeds on me will have life because of me. This is the bread that came down from heaven. Unlike your ancestors who ate and still died, whoever eats this bread will live forever.

3 CHANGING OF THE GUARD We joyfully welcome back to the Parish this weekend our pastor, Msgr. Crimmins, even as we say a fond farewell to Fr. Thomas Caswell who served us so ably in Monsignr s absence. SVDPS MEETING THIS TUESDAY Our parish chapter of the St. Vincent de Paul Society will meet this Tuesday, Aug.21, at 6:30 p.m. in the Rectory. As previously announced, the Society is seeking new members to share in their efforts to help the needy. To access the Rectory, please ring the intercom buzzer on the church s west entrance door frame, and someone will come down to let you in. NO PERSONAL LIT CANDLES IN CHURCH We are surprised that we need to mention this. But a small number of worshippers here during the day have been holding their own personal lit candles while praying in the sanctuary. Lit candles are always a fire hazard, especially when no one, or only a few persons, are present in the church to watch. If you wish to light a candle in memory of a loved one or for some other religious reason, please use the safe electric candles that we provide. St. Gregory s has enough problems. We don t need to add fire to the list. CONSIDER JOINING PARISH PAY One of the beneficial effects of the increased weekly giving program that the Parish started in the Spring, has been a big jump in the number of parishioners who have joined the ParishPay system. ParishPay givers need not worry about taking enough cash or a checkbook or the proper envelope to weekend mass. Instead, an amount previously selected by them is deducted weekly from their bank account or credit card account to be donated to St. Gregory s. The same is true for major Church holidays and holy days of obligation. Envelopes for enrolling in ParishPay are available at the rear of the church. For more information, go on-line at or phone the Rectory Office. AUG.24 ST. BARTHOLOMEW, APOSTLE On Friday of this week, August 24, the Church celebrates the feast of St. Bartholomew, apostle. Little is known for certain of this apostle. The name Bar-tholomaios means in Aramaic son of Tolomai. Many scholars, and tradition, hold that Bartholomew is the same as Nathanael, one of Jesus first disciples. [see.john: 1:45-51] After the Ascension, Bartholomew is believed to have become a missionary to India, Mesopotamia, Parthia and Armenia. He is therefore considered one of the patron saints of the Armenian Apostolic Church. Tradition has it that he was martyred in Armenia, supposedly out of some resentment that he had converted the Armenian king. One tradition abut his martyrdom is that he was skinned alive and crucified, head downward. That is why Bartholomew often is depicted in religious art holding a knife in one hand and in the other his own skin, e.g. Michelangelo s Last Judgment. Over time, Bartholomew has become identified with medicine and hospitals, and understandably is the patron saint of tanners.

One could not help but think of Luke 21:1-4, Jesus observing of the poor widow casting two mites into the synagogue treasury. For all these [the rich] have of their abundance cast in unto the offerings of God: but she of her penury hath cast in all the living that she had. Every little bit helps, and so we appreciate the devotion of these Sunday sellers. The regular collection last weekend was $4,676, which includes ParishPay gifts.
