2 FROM OUR PASTOR Pastor s Corner For those of you who saw me at Mass last weekend, you may have noticed how quickly I am recovering from my hip replacement surgery! By the time you read this I should be off the walker and simply using a cane. And soon that will be set aside! Again, thank you for your prayers, get-well cards, and good wishes. I am writing this on Monday morning (as I usually do) and I am eagerly anticipating the arrival of Pope Francis here in the United States this week. I am looking forward to hearing his words in Washington, D.C., New York, and Philadelphia. During his time here the Pope will meet with the President of our country and he will address the Joint Session of Congress and the United Nations General Assembly. And he will also be meeting with the poor, the marginalized, and the imprisoned. By the time you are reading this, these events will have already happened. But, on this beautiful Monday morning, I am full of anticipation as we all await the Holy Father's words. Based on his previous speeches, I know that the Pope will address our response to poverty in our world, and how we are not being good stewards of the planet earth that God has given us. His words regarding the evils of unfettered capitalism and materialism are legendary. In the past the Pope has stated that, "A Christian who is too attached to his riches has lost his way." This statement resonates deeply with me because I spent the early years of my adult life chasing the almighty dollar. My goal in life was, "Show me the money!" But, as we all know, there is something much more important than cash flow, investments, real estate, and earthly luxuries. And, as Jesus tells us, "Where your heart is, there also your treasure will be." During this week let us give thanks for the leadership of Pope Francis, and let us all recognize our call to walk together with our Lord Jesus Christ! May the Lord continue to bless us always and in all ways, Father Paul La Esquina del Párroco Para aquellos de ustedes que me vieron en la Misa del fin de semana pasado, pueden haber notado con que rapidez me estoy recuperando de mi cirugía de remplazo de cadera. En el momento en que lean esto no voy a tener el andador, simplemente estaré usando un bastón. Y pronto tampoco voy a necesitar el bastón. Una vez más, gracias por sus oraciones, cartas de recuperación y buenos deseos. Estoy escribiendo esto el lunes por la mañana (como yo) y estoy ansiosamente anticipando la llegada del Papa Francisco a los Estados Unidos esta semana. Estoy deseando escuchar sus palabras en Washington, D.C., Nueva York y Filadelfia. Durante su tiempo aquí el Papa se reunirá con el Presidente de nuestro país y tratará la sesión conjunta del Congreso y la Asamblea General de las Naciones Unidas. Y él también se reunirá con los pobres, los marginados y los encarcelados. Cuando lean esto ya los eventos habrán pasado. Pero, en esta hermosa mañana del lunes, estoy lleno de anticipación mientras esperamos palabras del Santo Padre. Basado en sus discursos anteriores, sé que el Papa abordara nuestra respuesta a la pobreza en nuestro mundo, y cómo no estamos siendo buenos administradores del planeta que Dios nos ha dado. Sus palabras con respecto a los males del capitalismo sin restricciones y el materialismo son legendarias. En el pasado, el Papa ha señalado que, "Un cristiano que se une a sus riquezas ha perdido su camino". Esta afirmación resuena profundamente conmigo porque pasé los primeros años de mi vida adulta persiguiendo el dólar todopoderoso. Mi meta en la vida fue, " Muéstrame el dinero!" Pero, como todos sabemos, hay algo mucho más importante que el flujo de efectivo, inversiones, bienes raíces y lujos terrenales. Y, como Jesús nos dice: "donde está tu corazón, también tu tesoro estará ahí". Durante esta semana demos gracias por el liderazgo del Papa Francisco y todos reconozcan nuestra llamada a caminar junto a nuestro Señor Jesucristo. 3 SPIRITUAL LIFE SPIRITUAL LIFE VISITS TO THE SICK AND HOMEBOUND If you or anyone you know is in need of receiving the sacrament of the anointing of the sick or is homebound and would like to receive Holy Communion please call the rectory at to arrange a time for a visit. EUCHARISTIC MINISTERS NEEDED The Marina Hospital is in need of Eucharistic Ministers who are available to help take communion to the sick Monday through Friday. If you are interested, or for more information, please contact Carolyn Griswold at READINGS FOR THE WEEK KNIGHTS OF COLUMBUS The Knights of Columbus is honored to facilitate the St. Mark Parish Annual Picnic next Sunday, October 4th at Chevron Park in El Segundo from 12-4pm. Come and celebrate with the entire Saint Mark Community and bring your favorite dish or dessert to share! The Knights of Columbus will provide plenty of hamburgers, hotdogs and soft drinks. There will also be a Pala Casino bus trip fund raiser on Saturday, October 17th. The event costs $25 and includes $5 in gambling money, drinks and food, and the bus. The bus will leave St Mark at 9:30 am and will return around 7:00 pm. Reservations are required. Contact Terry Ballentine at for more information. One member teaches a religious education class for children who are 3-5 years of age. We also go door to door to take a censes for our church and encourage people to come back to the church. 4 26th Sunday in Ordinary Time Saint Mark Church September 27, 2015 RELIGIOUS EDUCATION Thank You Last Sunday the Community of St. Mark honored all those who serve as parish Religious Education catechists and schoolteachers during a commissioning rite at our 9am mass. As we begin a new academic year we thank all those who serve the ministry of faith formation with children, youth and adults at St. Mark. This celebration of Catechetical Sunday is also a wonderful opportunity to reflect on the role that each person plays, by virtue of Baptism, in handing on the faith and being a witness to the Gospel.
