2 FROM OUR PASTOR Pastor s Corner I am writing this from my sister's house in St. Petersburg, Florida on Monday morning. I just arrived here after spending four days in Memphis, Tennessee with our brother and other sister. It was so good to see them! I always try to see them between Easter and the First Holy Communion Masses. The weather is always great at this time of year! A lot of things will be happening here at St. Mark over the next few weeks. Today we begin our celebrations of First Communions when our School students and Religious Education students will be receiving the Body and Blood of Jesus Christ fir the first time. Next Sunday is Mother's Day (and there will be no First Communions on that day). The next two Sundays will have First Communion Masses. And then our High School students will be sealed with the Gifts of the Holy Spirit in the Sacrament of Confirmation. In June we continue with our 8th Grade Graduation. And we will begin the meetings of our Focus Groups as we continue to analyze the responses to the Parish Survey that was taken during my Sabbatical. As you can see, a lit of great things are on the horizon! This Thursday I fly back to Los Angeles, so by the time you are reading this I will already be back at the parish! I look forward to seeing each of you as we continue to celebrate this blessed Easter season! May the Lord continue to bless us always and in all ways, Father Paul Spellman La Esquina del Párroco Estoy escribiendo desde la casa de mi hermana en St. Petersburg, Florida el lunes por la mañana. Apenas llegué aquí después de pasar cuatro días en Memphis, Tennessee con nuestro hermano y otra hermana. Fue tan bueno verlos! Siempre trato de verlos entre Pascua y las Misas de Primera Comunión. En esta época del ano la temperatura es muy agradable. En las próximas semanas van a suceder muchas cosas en San Marcos. Hoy comenzamos las celebraciones de las Primeras Comuniones cuando nuestros estudiantes de la escuela y de Educación Religiosa van a recibir por primera vez el Cuerpo y la Sangre de Nuestro Señor Jesucristo. El próximo domingo es el día de la madre (y no habrá comuniones ese día). Los dos próximos domingos tendremos Misas de Primera Comunión. Y luego nuestros estudiantes de secundaria serán sellados con los dones del Espíritu Santo en el Sacramento de la Confirmación. En junio continuamos con nuestra graduación del grado 8. Y vamos a comenzar las reuniones de nuestros grupos de enfoque analizando las respuestas a la encuesta de la parroquia que fue tomada durante mi sabático. Como se puede ver, hay grandes cosas en el horizonte. Este jueves voy a volar a Los Ángeles, por lo que en el momento que estén leyendo esto ya estaré de vuelta en la parroquia. 3 SPIRITUAL LIFE VIDA ESPIRITUAL MOTHERS DAY NOVENA Next weekend is Mother s Day! As always, we will be celebrating a Novena of Masses for the mothers of our community - living and deceased. If you wish to have you mothers remembered in the novena of Masses please use one of the special enrollment envelopes which will be available in the pews today. CARDINAL MCINTYRE FUND FOR CHARITY Since 1951, the Cardinal McIntyre Fund for Charity has offered hope for those in crisis situations throughout the Archdiocese of Los Angeles. This weekend all parishes in the Archdiocese will take up this Annual Collection. Your contribution goes directly toward emergency needs for children, adults and families and provides one-time emergency help for food, utilities, medical, housing or funeral expenses. The goal of the Cardinal McIntyre Fund for Charity is service to the neediest of the needy, those for whom no other resources exist. Envelopes can be found in the pews today. ST. VINCENT DE PAUL The Society of St. Vincent de Paul runs a summer camp for children ages 7 to 13 in the mountains north of Santa Barbara ( Generous parishioners and the St. Mark SVdP Conference will be sponsoring scholarships for children to attend the camp this summer for 6 days and 5nights. Please let the conference know if you would like to nominate a child to attend. Nominating a camper or requesting information about SVdP services can be made at (310) or stmarksvdpveniceca@gmail.com. FINGERPRINTING There will be a fingerprinting session at St. Mark School on Wednesday, May 17th from 12:00pm - 7:00pm. LiveScan Fingerprinting is required of all adults who volunteer in a parish ministry and/or school. Appointments are required and can be made by calling the school at CRS RICE BOWLS Our Lenten journey with CRS Rice Bowl ends in our own hearts, where Jesus reigns forever. Let us rejoice in our risen Lord and in the lives we ve changed this Lent in India, Zambia, El Salvador, Mexico, Ethiopia and all over the world! In our second year of participation we have collected hundreds of rice bowls and our contributions have increased totaling over $10,000. This Easter season, let us be mindful to continue to put aside those things that distract us, so we can better serve those who need our time, prayers and energy each and every day. NOVENA DE MISAS PARA EL DIA DE LA MADRE El próximo fin de semana será el Día de la Madre. Como hacemos todos los años vamos a celebrar una Novena de Misas por la madres vivas y las que han fallecido. Si desea que se recuerde a su madre en esta novena de misas, utilice uno de los sobres especiales que están en las bancas hoy. FONDO DE CARIDAD DEL CARDENAL MCINTYRE Desde 1951, el Fondo de Caridad del Cardenal McIntyre ha dado esperanza a todos aquellos en situaciones de crisis en toda la Arquidiócesis de Los Ángeles. Este fin de semana todas las parroquias de la Arquidiócesis tendrán la Colecta Anual. Su contribución va directamente hacia las necesidades de emergencia para niños, adultos y familias, y se ofrece ayuda de emergencia una sola vez de alimentos, servicios públicos, médicos, de vivienda o para gastos del funeral. SOCIEDAD DE SAN VICENTE La Sociedad de San Vicente de Paul dirige un campamento de verano para niños y niñas en las edades 7 a 13 en las montañas al norte de Santa Bárbara ( Feligreses generosos y la Conferencia de San Marcos de SVdP estarán patrocinando becas para que los niños/niñas asistan al campamento este verano por 6 días/5 noches. 5 SAFE GUARD THE CHILDREN SCHOOL NEWS Implementing national mandate to protect children 2017 marks 15 years since the establishment of the United States Catholic Conference of Bishops Charter for the Protection of Children and Young People. The Archdiocese has made an ongoing commitment over the past 15 years to implement the Charter by providing education and tools to help protect children and young people from child sexual abuse and other threats to their safety. Since 2002, the Archdiocese has trained 300,000 adults and more than 1.4 million children. The line that reads Even though I walk in the dark valley / I fear no evil; for you are at my side / with your rod and your staff / that give me courage (Psalm 23:4) connects this week s scriptures to the wonderful story of the road to Emmaus, which we heard last week. The Lord Jesus, our Good Shepherd, is constantly at our side. He calls us each by name, beckoning us into a deeper relationship with him. That call, issued to each of us at the moment of our baptism, carries with it the promise of the Good Shepherd: I came so that they might have life and have it more abundantly (John 10:10).
