2 FROM OUR PASTOR Pastor s Corner No matter who has won the elections, the readings this weekend remind us that our challenge to work for justice continues. The first reading is a strong reminder that God wants justice for all peoples. Alongside the warnings of disaster for the proud and evildoers, the promise of the rising sun of justice gives us hope. Worship and justice must go hand in hand. We cannot give praise to a God who calls us to act justly and defend the helpless and then ignore the multiple situations of injustice that mark our cities, country, world and society. God is not pleased with a religion that does not make a positive difference in the lives of others or lead to action. As Pope John Paul II insisted in his letter announcing the Year of the Eucharist in 2004: We cannot delude ourselves: by our mutual love and in particular, by our concern for those in need we will be recognized as true followers of Christ. Work for justice is hard. Progress is slow. It is easy to get discouraged and abandon our efforts when results are difficult to see. As many justice issues involve political ramifications, we might see progress on some issues during one administration rolled back by the next. Political forces, frequently allied by powerful business interests, often hinder international efforts. Yet God calls us to persevere. At the end of this weekend s gospel, Jesus declares, By your perseverance you will secure your lives. Here Jesus is referring to surviving persecution, but if we stop and think about it, perseverance is needed in every aspect of a faith-filled life. One clear opportunity for all of us is the Campaign for Human Development that will be taken up as a second collection this weekend. Father Michael Tang La Esquina del Párroco No importa quién ha ganado las elecciones, las lecturas de este fin de semana nos recuerdan nuestro reto a trabajar por la justicia continúa. La primera lectura es un fuerte recordatorio de que Dios quiere a justicia para todos los pueblos. Junto a las advertencias de desastre para los soberbios y malvados, la promesa de la salida del sol de Justicia nos da esperanza. Culto y justicia deben ir de la mano. No podemos alabar a un Dios que nos llama a actuar con justicia y defender a los indefensos y luego ignorar las múltiples situaciones de injusticia que marcan nuestras ciudades, país, mundo y sociedad. Dios no se complace con una religión que no hace una diferencia positiva en la vida de otros o llevar a la acción. Como insistió el Papa John Paul II en su carta anunciando el año de la Eucaristía en 2004: "no podemos engañarnos: por el amor mutuo y en particular, por nuestra preocupación por los necesitados debemos ser reconocidos como verdaderos seguidores de Cristo." Trabajo por la justicia es difícil. El progreso es lento. Es fácil desanimarse y abandonar nuestros esfuerzos cuando los resultados son difíciles de ver. Como muchos temas de la justicia implican ramificaciones políticas, podríamos ver progresos en algunos temas durante una administración revierte por la siguiente. Las fuerzas políticas, con frecuencia aliadas por intereses empresariales poderosos, a menudo obstaculizan los esfuerzos internacionales. Pero Dios nos llama a perseverar. 3 PARISH SURVEY & PASTORAL PLANNING The St. Mark Parish assessment and survey which will be used to guide the goals and objectives for the parish community will take place in two weeks. Some of the questions will ask you to reflect on your perspective and experiences at St. Mark. For example, you will be asked to rate statements, such as We need more space for liturgy. If you are unfamiliar or don t know, you are asked to leave this question blank. Take a moment to decide whether you are familiar enough with the space needed for liturgy and to complete the question, or if you will leave it blank. If you choose to complete this question you will be asked to evaluate the statement using one of the following 1-Strongly Disagree, 2-Somewhat Disagree, 3-Somwhat Agree or 4-Strongly Agree. Take a moment to consider which rating you might choose. You may also be asked to rate your agreement with the statements, I feel included in parish life or I want to volunteer more for this parish. The surveys will be anonymous and the information will only be used to guide the research and planning process. In the coming weeks, more information about how to prepare for the survey will be provided. Thank you for your participation. SPECIAL COLLECTION This weekend we will take up the Collection for the Catholic Campaign for Human Development. For over 40 years, CCHD has funded community groups that create lasting change. Your donation will help fight poverty in America. The envelopes for this special collection are in the pews today. PROCESSION OF OUR LADY OF GUADALUPE The Guadalupe Society of Saint Mark will have a bus for the Annual Archdiocesan Procession in honor of Our Lady of Guadalupe. This beautiful celebration will be on Sunday, December 4th at the Stadium of the East Los Angeles College. The cost is $5 per adult and $3 for children over five years old. Families with more than three children will get a special discount. Payment must be made at the time of reservation. The bus will leave at 8:30am in front of the school and will return at approximately 4:30pm. Please arrive early and bring your lunch, rosaries, flags and native or regional attire from your country. Second Reading Paul speaks of his hard work among the Thessalonians (2 Thessalonians 3:7-12). Gospel Jesus foretells the destruction of Jerusalem, the persecution of his followers. 5 SAFE GUARD THE CHILDREN Avoid "fixing" and try to listen and understand Sometimes adults may have a tendency to try and fix problems that come up with their children. While the instinct to help and the loving concern behind it is understandable, it is not always the best course of action if the child is not learning something about how to handle a problem at least partly on their own. For some problems, children just need a good listener; for others they need guidance and help discerning how best to respond. Try asking questions, encouraging solutions, and praying with and for the child. It is a traditional practice in our Catholic Church to dedicate the entire month of November to remembering and praying for all of our beloved dead. MEALS ON WHEELS The Meals-on-wheels program located in Culver City, serves areas in Venice, Mar Vista, Culver City, Marina del Rey & Westchester.
