2 FROM OUR PASTOR Pastor s Corner Today we celebrate the beautiful and important Solemnity of the Body and Blood of Jesus. The Solemnity of the Most Holy Body and Blood of Christ which we celebrate today is also known as the Solemnity of Corpus Christi, which translates from Latin to "Body of Christ." This feast originated in France in the mid thirteenth century and was extended to the whole Church by Pope Urban IV in This feast calls us to focus on two manifestations of the Body of Christ, the Holy Eucharist and the Church. The primary purpose of this feast is to focus our attention on the Eucharist. The opening prayer at Mass calls our attention to Jesus' suffering and death and our worship of Him, especially in the Eucharist. At every Mass our attention is called to the Eucharist and the Real Presence of Christ in it. The secondary focus of this feast is upon the Body of Christ as it is present in the Church. The Church is called the Body of Christ because of the intimate communion which Jesus shares with his disciples. He expresses this in the gospels by using the metaphor of a body in which He is the head. This image helps keep in focus both the unity and the diversity of the Church. The Feast of Corpus Christi is commonly used as an opportunity for public Eucharistic processions, which serves as a sign of common faith and adoration. Our worship of Jesus in His Body and Blood calls us to offer to God our Father a pledge of undivided love and an offering of ourselves to the service of others. We are holding a traditional procession of the Blessed Sacrament to 4 specially erected altars in our parking lot after the 12:00 noon Spanish Mass today. This short bi-lingual celebration is open to everyone. All are welcome to join the procession proudly proclaiming to the world that Jesus is still with us especially in the Holy Eucharist. Today is also a good time to reflect on our own relationship with Christ in the Eucharist and our reception of the Eucharist as well. I began the practice here at St. Mark s 12 years ago to invite those not prepared to receive Communion at a Mass to at least come forward to receive a blessing. 12 years later more and more parishioners are doing so. I have also encouraged you who were not receiving Communion to address the issues holding you back from receiving and coming to me, or the other priests, to try to find a solution. Some have done this as well. But there are still many more who have not. Please - the church is here to help you to grow as close as you can to Christ. The Eucharist is a gift. Please do whatever it takes to be able and prepared to receive Christ in the Eucharist when you come to Mass. May I also encourage you to be clear at the moment of reception of the Eucharist on which way you wish to receive the Body of Christ at Mass. There only two options - either on your tongue or in you hands. Please cup your right hand under your left hand and extend you hands clearly to the priest or minister to receive the Body of Christ. Consume the host immediately and never walk away with the Eucharist in your hands. To receive on the tongue please extend you tongue outwardly and open your mouths. The careful reception of the Eucharist is very important. Please join me next Sunday, June 29th, at my final special bilingual Mass at St. Mark s at 12:00noon followed by an outdoor reception from 1:00pm to 3:00pm. It would be good to see you all to say goodbye. Padre Michael Rocha

5 SAFE GUARD THE CHILDREN SCHOOL NEWS Tips for summer camp safety Summer is almost here. School is almost out, and a whole host of new opportunities for recreation and relaxation await. Maybe you are sending your children to a music or sports camp? Or maybe they have been invited by their friends to go camping in the mountains or at the beach? Whatever the situation, it is important to remember that parents still have the responsibility of controlling access that new people will have to their children. If your children are attending a summer camp, insist that counselors or anyone else who might have access to your children have undergone an application process that includes a criminal background check and reference checks. This feast reminds us that the goal of the catechumen s journey through Lent is not the baptismal font at Easter, but rather the experience of Pentecost. It is all about life lived in the Spirit s embrace in relationship to the Body of Christ, which is found both on the table and at the table. The season of confirmation is also drawing to a close, and this feast serves as a reminder that this sacrament, a solemn sending from font to table, is keyed to renewed vigor. Confirmation has sometimes been sadly misunderstood as a kind of graduation from religious formation, but it is nothing of the sort. It is about being led by the Lord Jesus to the place where the Spirit flourishes, and where the gifts of the Spirit are most easily detectable. After next week we will resume our consideration of the sacrament of confirmation, its rich and somewhat tangled history, its challenging theology, and its changing celebration.
