2 FROM OUR PASTOR Pastor s Corner During this Easter season we continue to recognize our call to rediscover Jesus, especially as we continue to walk in His footsteps. By now each family in our parish should have received a copy of Matthew Kelly's book with that title, "Rediscover Jesus." Quite often we grew up with an image of God that may have emphasized following rules rather than walking in His Light and in His Love. And we may have also formed a less mature image of Jesus, based on our childhood understanding of His teachings. In reality, Jesus calls us to receive His message as a child would, with wonder and awe. Perhaps we make things too complicated. The message of Jesus is based on its simplicity: To love God and to love our neighbors. In the Gospel, someone asks Jesus, "And who is my neighbor?" And Jesus responds by telling the parable of the Good Samaritan and then challenges us to make ourselves neighbor to one another. In today's Gospel, the two disciples encounter Jesus on their journey to the town of Emmaus. As they walked along, mile after mile, they did not recognize Him. But, once they did recognize Him, in the Breaking of the Bread, they asked each other, "Were not our hearts burning within us while He spoke to us on the way and opened the Scriptures to us?" As we read the book, "Rediscover Jesus" let us open our hearts to receiving His message, and to recognize Him in the Breaking of the Bread! 3 SPIRITUAL LIFE THE MARY WIDOWS OF ST. MARK The Mary Widows of St. Mark is a new ministry of our parish for all widows to gather together to share, pray and socialize. Their next gathering will be Saturday, May 6th at 1:00pm at the home of Mrs. Helen Liberto. For more information, please call MOTHERS DAY NOVENA Mother s Day is coming up and as always, we will be celebrating a Novena of Masses for the mothers of our community - living and deceased. If you wish to have you mothers remembered in the novena of Masses please use one of the special enrollment envelopes which will be available in the pews today. CARDINAL MCINTYRE FUND FOR CHARITY Since 1951, the Cardinal McIntyre Fund for Charity has offered hope for those in crisis situations throughout the Archdiocese of Los Angeles. Next weekend all parishes in the Archdiocese will take up this Annual Collection. Your contribution goes directly toward emergency needs for children, adults and families and provides one-time emergency help for food, utilities, medical, housing or funeral expenses. The goal of the Cardinal McIntyre Fund for Charity is service to the neediest of the needy, those for whom no other resources exist. Envelopes can be found in the pews today. ST. VINCENT DE PAUL The Society of St. Vincent de Paul runs a summer camp for children ages 7 to 13 in the mountains north of Santa Barbara ( Generous parishioners and the St. Mark SVdP Conference will be sponsoring scholarships for children to attend the camp this summer for 6 days/5nights. FONDO DE CARIDAD DEL CARDENAL MCINTYRE Desde 1951, el Fondo de Caridad del Cardenal McIntyre ha dado esperanza a todos aquellos en situaciones de crisis en toda la Arquidiócesis de Los Ángeles. El próximo fin de semana todas las parroquias de la Arquidiócesis tendrán la Colecta Anual. Su contribución va directamente hacia las necesidades de emergencia para niños, adultos y familias, y se ofrece ayuda de emergencia una sola vez de alimentos, servicios públicos, médicos, de vivienda o para gastos del funeral. Acts of the Apostles tells the story of the spread of the Gospel and the growth of the early church from its beginnings at Pentecost, following the ascension of Jesus. RCIA Many thanks to Susan Lewis, RCIA Coordinator, and the RCIA team for their loving service in the ministry of welcome, hospitality, teaching, and mentoring. Thanks also to the many parish groups who participated in hosting the reception after Easter Vigil. It was truly a night to remember. 5 SAFE GUARD THE CHILDREN SCHOOL NEWS Implementing national mandate to protect children 2017 marks 15 years since the establishment of the United States Catholic Conference of Bishops Charter for the Protection of Children and Young People. The Archdiocese has made an ongoing commitment over the past 15 years to implement the Charter by providing education and tools to help protect children and young people from child sexual abuse and other threats to their safety. Since 2002, the Archdiocese has trained 300,000 adults and more than 1.4 million children.
