Is my offering at today s Mass an appropriate response to the many blessings the Lord has given me? Archbishop s Charity and Development Drive Pledge Thank you for your generous pledge to the 2013 Archbishop s Charities and Development Drive (ABCD). We ask that you join us in making a pledge to this year s ABCD and make a difference in the lives of your brothers and sisters in need, so that together, we can be One in Faith, One in Hope, One in Charity. Last Wednesday, with the penitential Rite of Ashes we began Lent, a Season of spiritual renewal in preparation for the annual celebration of Easter. But what does it mean to begin the Lenten journey? The Gospel for this First Sunday of Lent illustrates it for us with the account of the temptations of Jesus in the desert. The Evangelist St Luke recounts that after receiving Baptism from John, Jesus, full of the Holy Spirit, returned from the Jordan, and was led by the Spirit for forty days in the wilderness, tempted by the devil (Lk 4: 1). There is a clear insistence on the fact that the temptations were not just an incident on the way but rather the consequence of Jesus decision to carry out the mission entrusted to him by the Father to live to the very end his reality as the beloved Son who trusts totally in him. Christ came into the world to set us free from sin and from the ambiguous fascination of planning our life leaving God out. He did not do so with loud proclamations but rather by fighting the Tempter himself, until the Cross. This example applies to everyone: the world is improved by starting with oneself, changing, with God's grace, everything in one's life that is not going well. Benedict XVI Believing in charity calls forth charity We have come to know and to believe in the love God has for us (1 Jn 4:16) The celebration of Lent, in the context of the Year of Faith, offers us a valuable opportunity to meditate on the relationship between faith and charity: between believing in God the God of Jesus Christ and love, which is the fruit of the Holy Spirit and which guides us on the path of devotion to God and others. 1. Faith as a response to the love of God God is love! Faith, which sees the love of God revealed in the pierced heart of Jesus on the Cross, gives rise to love. Love is the light and in the end, the only light that can always illuminate a world grown dim and give us the courage needed to keep living and working 2. Charity as life in faith Faith causes us to embrace the commandment of our Lord and Master; charity gives us the happiness of putting it into practice (cf. Jn 13:13-17). 3. The indissoluble interrelation of faith and charity Lent invites us, through the traditional practices of the Christian life, to [ ]grow in charity and in love for God and neighbor, not least through the specific practices of fasting, penance and almsgiving. 4. Priority of faith, primacy of charity Everything begins from the humble acceptance of faith ( knowing that one is loved by God ), but has to arrive at the truth of charity ( knowing how to love God and neighbor ), which remains for ever, as the fulfilment of all the virtues (cf. 1 Cor 13:13). 3 17 de Febrero de 2013 Primer Domingo de Cuaresma Good Shepherd Catholic Church and School Primer Domingo de Cuaresma Dt 26:4-10; Sal 91; Rom 10:8-13; Lc 4:1-1 El miércoles pasado, con el rito penitencial de la Ceniza, comenzamos la Cuaresma, tiempo de renovación espiritual que prepara para la celebración anual de la Pascua. Pero, qué significa entrar en el itinerario cuaresmal? Nos lo explica el Evangelio de este primer domingo, con el relato de las tentaciones de Jesús en el desierto. El evangelista san Lucas narra que Jesús, tras haber recibido el bautismo de Juan, lleno del Espíritu Santo, volvió del Jordán y, durante cuarenta días, el Espíritu lo fue llevando por el desierto, mientras era tentado por el diablo (Lc 4, 1-2). Es evidente la insistencia en que las tentaciones no fueron contratiempo, sino la consecuencia de la opción de Jesús de seguir la misión que le encomendó el Padre de vivir plenamente su realidad de Hijo amado, que confía plenamente en él. Cristo vino al mundo para liberarnos del pecado y de la fascinación ambigua de programar nuestra vida prescindiendo de Dios. Él no lo hizo con declaraciones altisonantes, sino luchando en primera persona contra el Tentador, hasta la cruz. Este ejemplo vale para todos: el mundo se mejora comenzando por nosotros mismos, cambiando, con la gracia de Dios, lo que no está bien en nuestra propia vida. S.S. Creer en la caridad suscita caridad Hemos conocido el amor que Dios nos tiene y hemos creído en él (1 Jn 4,16) La celebración de la Cuaresma, en el marco del Año de la Fe, nos ofrece una ocasión preciosa para meditar sobre la relación entre fe y caridad: entre creer en Dios, el Dios de Jesucristo, y el amor, que es fruto de la acción del Espíritu Santo y nos guía por un camino de entrega a Dios y a los demás. 1. La fe como respuesta al amor de Dios Dios es amor... La fe, que hace tomar conciencia del amor de Dios revelado en el corazón traspasado de Jesús en la cruz, suscita a su vez el amor. El amor es una luz en el fondo la única que ilumina constantemente a un mundo oscuro y nos da la fuerza para vivir y actuar. 2. La caridad como vida en la fe La fe nos hace acoger el mandamiento del Señor y Maestro; la caridad nos da la dicha de ponerlo en práctica (cf. Jn 13,13-17). 3. El lazo indisoluble entre fe y caridad La cuaresma, con las tradicionales indicaciones para la vida cristiana, nos invita precisamente a [ ] crecer en la caridad, en el amor a Dios y al prójimo, también a través de las indicaciones concretas del ayuno, de la penitencia y de la limosna. 4. Prioridad de la fe, primado de la caridad Todo parte de la humilde aceptación de la fe ( saber que Dios nos ama ), pero debe llegar a la verdad de la caridad ( saber amar a Dios y al prójimo ), que permanece para siempre, como cumplimiento de todas las virtudes.
