1 On the jobsite, you always need to have a plan. Before you start any task, you have to plan out the materials, tools, and PPE you ll need. Importantly, you have to plan for the unexpected. Today we re going to talk about planning for emergencies. The key to handling and sometimes surviving an emergency is proper planning. You need to have a welldeveloped and practiced emergency plan in place before the unexpected happens. Emergencies come in all shapes and sizes and can include fire, heart attack, extreme weather, active shooter, disgruntled employee, heavy equipment failure, crane collapse, trench cave-in, problems in a confined space, injuries from a fall, and motor vehicle accidents. Would you know what to do if an emergency happened today? Know how to get help. Your emergency action plan may include calling 911, contacting on-site security, and sounding an alarm to notify workers to evacuate or take other action. If there is no cell phone service at the site, know where the nearest available land line is located. Learn the exact location of the jobsite street address, city, and state so emergency services can find you as quickly as possible. Know where to go. Do you know where to go if you have to evacuate the area or if you have to shelter in place? Are you aware of what your emergency escape route is? NOTES: Emergency Preparedness Escape routes change as buildings develop. Update your escape plan daily in case your first choice is blocked. Learn how to use a fire extinguisher. To put out a small fire with an extinguisher, use the PASS method: Pull, Aim, Squeeze, Sweep. Don t let a fire get between you and your exit. Know where to find fire extinguishers. Know what type of extinguisher to grab for the fire you need to stop. Get training. Be prepared to help during a medical emergency. Get certified in first aid, CPR, and using an AED. If it s been a while, take a refresher course. Practice. Training can seem like a waste of time, but it s vital. Practicing the emergency plan will help you make good choices when you re surrounded by chaos and it s hard to think. Memorize. Commit critical contact information to memory in case you can t depend on your cell phone. Every jobsite has an emergency plan. The plan might change as the project changes. The plan should consider the project size, layout, structural features, on-site hazardous materials, and available emergency systems. If you don t know what the emergency plan for this jobsite is, talk with your supervisor. SAFETY REMINDER You get safety training at work. You need to give the safety training at home. Share your knowledge! MEETING DOCUMENTATION: SPECIAL TOPICS /EMPLOYEE SAFETY RECOMMENDATIONS/NOTES: JOB NAME: MEETING DATE: ATTENDEES: S.A.F.E.
