1 Semana What do you 2 know about English? Semana 1 Let s start! Hello again! Esta semana vamos a seguir repasando conocimientos previos relacionados con lo que estudiaremos en el presente semestre. Comenzaremos revisando los diferentes tipos de condicionales en inglés, que ya estudiamos anteriormente: zero conditional, first, second and third conditional. También retomaremos los verbos modales ya estudiados. Los recuerdas? Can, Must, Should, May, Might. Sigue evaluando tu aprendizaje mientras avanzas. En tu DVD encontrarás varios formatos de autoevaluación. What do you know about...? Qué sabes acerca de las culturas del mundo?, conoces expresiones culturales y artísticas en inglés y en tu lengua territorial?, sabes que cada año se lleva a cabo un festival donde se muestran y comparten las manifestaciones culturales de muchísimos países? Festival of World Cultures The DLR Festival of World Cultures is a family friendly festival that crosses cultural, ethnic, religious and social bridges. This festival takes place near Dublin, Ireland, in a County that is named Dún Laoghaire Rathdown. The County Council prepares this festival with the help of neighbors and others eager to participate. As you enjoy the Festival over the weekend, you should embrace in respecting the diversity of cultures around you. For example, for many people of other cultures and religious faiths, alcohol may not form part of society. For that reason, it is forbidden to drink alcohol during this festival. 75

Here you have some rules to attend the festival: a) It is illegal to drink alcohol outside of licensed premises. b) Be mindful of local residents when attending the Festival and be quiet when leaving the area. c) Deposit your rubbish in the general waste and recycling bins provided. d) It is illegal to trade throughout the site without permission. e) Make sure to drink plenty of water throughout the day, as sunshine can dehydrate severely. f) Also make sure to replenish with some of the food on offer throughout the Festival. g) We encourage you to travel the green way and reduce traffic congestion. Do not drink and drive under any circumstances. h) Keep an eye out for your friends at the Festival. Arrange a meeting point; encourage them to drink some water. 2. Escribe oraciones referentes a las reglas del Festival, utilizando los verbos modales: Can, Must, Should, May y Might. Sigue el ejemplo: Drink alcohol during the festival = You can t drink alcohol during this festival. 4 Semana 2 describe situaciones imaginarias e irreales, hipotéticas. Vamos a revisar los tipos de condicionales en inglés y sus usos. Zero Conditional Condicional Presente Habitual o Real When I am late, my father takes me to school. Cuando estoy retrasado, mi padre me lleva a la escuela. A este tipo de condicional también se le llama Zero Conditional o condicional Cero. Se usa para referir situaciones que siempre ocurren o son siempre ciertas si se da una condición. Completa la estructura de este condicional: Condicional Cero / Presente Habitual If /When I study, I pass the exams. Estructura: First Conditional Primer Condicional Posibilidad Real Futura If I go to Valencia, I ll buy you a souvenir. Si voy a Valencia, te compraré un recuerdo. 78

5 Semana 2 Como puedes ver, esta estructura está expresando una condición o situación en el futuro, y luego un resultado de esa condición. Hay una posibilidad real de que esta condición se dé o suceda. Por ejemplo, tienes planes de jugar tenis esta tarde, pero hay nubarrones en el cielo. Imagínate si llueve. Qué harás? Completa la oración en español: Si llueve esta tarde, Este tiempo se llama First Conditional. Repasa el uso que le damos a este tipo de condicional y escríbelo debajo: Completa la estructura de este condicional: First Conditional / Posibilidad Futura If I go to Valencia, I will buy you a souvenir. Estructura: Condicional Presente Irreal Posibilidad irreal o sueño Second Conditional If I owned a car, I would drive to work. (But I don t own a car). Si tuviera un carro, conduciría al trabajo. (Pero no tengo un carro) 79

6 Semana 2 El Segundo Condicional es usado para hablar acerca de algo que normalmente harías en una situación imaginaria. Con el Segundo Condicional estamos hablando también de una situación particular futura y el resultado de esa condición. Pero aquí no hay posibilidad real de que esta condición se dé. Completa la estructura de este condicional: Second Conditional / Posibilidad Irreal o Sueño If I were rich, I would buy a house. Estructura: Condicional Irreal Pasado: Situación Imposible Tercer Condicional If she had won the lottery, she would have traveled around the world Si ella hubiera ganado la lotería, habría viajado alrededor del mundo Con el tercer condicional, llamado en inglés Past Unreal Conditional, hablamos acerca del pasado, una situación imaginaria que nunca ocurrió. Es por eso que no hay posibilidad para esta condición. 80

7 Semana 2 Imagínate esta situación: la semana pasada jugaste a la lotería, pero no ganaste. Qué habría pasado si hubieras ganado? Completa la estructura de este condicional: Third Conditional / Situación Imposible de ocurrir If I had won the lottery, I would have bought a house. Estructura: Vamos a repasar los usos de estos modales: Can, Must, Should, May, Might. Completa la tabla 4 con sus usos. Tabla 4. Verbos modales MODALS Can Should Must USES Can is used to express Can se usa para expresar Should se usa para expresar Should también se usa para expresar Must se usa para expresar Comúnmente, se usa para expresar También se usa para expresar May Might May se usa expresar Might se usa para expresar Sin embargo, might expresa may., y para que Hoy en día la negación de permiso se expresa siempre con cannot, y no con may not. Ex: May we play tennis, Mummy? No, you can t. (Más común que: No, you may not.) 81

8 Semana 2 Might se usa para expresar posibilidad. Sin embargo, might expresa menos posibilidad que may. I may pass. (50% chance) I might pass. (20% chance) The patient may recover. (It is possible for the patient to recover.) The patient might recover. (It is possible but very unlikely.) Let s know more Es hora de aprender más, para seguir cultivando tus conocimientos. Ve a tu DVD y realiza las actividades propuestas para esta semana. También encontrarás un video sobre el Festival de Culturas del Mundo. Sería interesante que lo vieras junto con tus compañeros del CCA. 1. Investiga acerca de las diferentes expresiones culturales en inglés. Puedes visitar el portal UNESCO: URL_ID=33014&URL_DO=DO_TOPIC&URL_SECTION=201.html Al llegar a este portal, ubícate en la columna color violeta al lado izquierdo de la pantalla, que es la barra de temas; pulsa en la palabra Creativity (creatividad), y escribe tus comentarios en español acerca de lo que leas allí. Luego comparte tus opiniones con tus compañeros en el CCA. 2. Investiga acerca de los dialectos y acentos diferentes de la lengua inglesa que puede haber en el mundo. Indaga en cualquier medio: internet, documentos impresos, o mediante entrevista a un especialista en el área. Luego, comenta lo que encontraste con tus compañeros y facilitador en el CCA. En inglés se llaman tongue twisters. Ve a tu DVD y practica los trabalenguas que se presentan. En el próximo encuentro en el CCA, tendrás un concurso de trabalenguas con tus compañeros. Let s show what we know Demuestra tus conocimientos con actividades realizadas por ti. Aquí evaluarás tu propio desempeño y el desempeño de tus compañeros. 1. En tu DVD, busca el texto que habla acerca de países de lengua inglesa y de tu país, Venezuela. A partir de la información recogida en el texto, completa un cuadro comparativo (tabla 5), que encontrarás allí, en inglés o en español. En el cuadro establecerás comparaciones sobre las manifestaciones artísticas de otros pueblos y Venezuela. Luego, imprímelo y llévalo a tu encuentro semanal en el CCA. Allí, junto a tus compañeros, revisen lo que escribió cada uno. 2. Prepara una exposición en inglés para el CCA o para la Radio Revista Juvenil, acerca de cualquiera de los aspectos culturales de uno de los países de lengua inglesa y de tu país. Puedes hablar sobre el cine, la música o las comidas típicas. 85
