2 Hey now, Merry Christmas! FROM THE PASTOR On this last day of the Christmas season, I would like to invite you to look up the Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. s sermon that he gave on Christmas Eve in It was given at Ebenezer Baptist Church where he was co-pastor and he so eloquently talks of peace. You can see or hear connections to some of his other speeches and the thread that runs through his words continue to talk about peace and nonviolence. Sadly, his words have so much to say to the world we live in today, especially our country, almost as if nothing has changed since that night a little over 51 years ago. As I was reading this, the church was also recalling a celebration that started fifty some years ago and that is the National Migration Week. This is a time, from January 6-12, that the church in this country calls us to remember in a special way, immigrants, migrants, refugees and victims of human trafficking. I realize that as I write those words some people will cringe (I know yet again, I have that effect on some people) because those are the hot button issues that we are plunged into at this moment in time. Thus, during this National Migration Week I suggest we just remember our sisters and brothers who have had to journey away from the home of their ancestors (some of which have lived in that place for well over 1000 years). We should think about those beloved children of God of all ages that are risking their lives to protect, care for, or help their family. We should think of those beloved little ones that are enslaved because of the greediness that comes from a dark place in people s hearts that think it is alright to own another human being. We should instead of using the word refugee, think about our children and see the smiles on their faces and as we do remember that there are children just like them that have never lived a day without war or without ending their day with a prayer that they may live to see another day. As Dr. King said if we look at peace as simply that far off goal we will never get there, but if we use it as a means that we employ every day of our lives then we move closer to making that dream a reality. Peace allows us to see that in this world we have become interdependent. The amazing picture of the Earth taken from a spacecraft as it was orbiting the moon shows us that we all walk upon a blue ball suspended effortlessly amidst the darkness of space. One nation cannot close itself off from the others on this, God s Earth, because we breathe from the same atmosphere and our thirst is satiated from the water produced by the weather that is one day here and the next day makes its way around the globe. On this last day of Christmas, let us think of a dream. Not a dream simply for ourselves but for our children s, children s, children to begin with and ask if we want them to live in a world that is forever at war? Do we want them to grow up in a world where walls continue to divide one people from another (please think about this carefully as that wall one day may keep your descendants from seeking to protect and care for your great, great great grandchildren), or would we rather see bridges built. (The beautiful thing about that image is that one title of the Pope is Pontifex Maximus which means the great bridge builder). Our faith in Jesus Christ always has challenged us that if we choose to be His disciple we will see as God sees. There is neither Guatemalan or American, no slave or free, no black or white, there is only one Body of Christ in which we are all parts. The only answer for us now as it was for Dr. King all those decades ago is being sharers of the peace of Christ, being people of faith in our Savior. With this faith we will be able to speed up the day when there will be peace on earth and good will towards all. It will be a glorious day, the morning stars will sing together and the children of God will shout for joy. In Christ s Peace, Fr. Gary

3 Hola a todos, DEL PASTOR Feliz Navidad! En este último día de la temporada navideña, me gustaría invitarlos a consultar el sermón del Reverendo Dr. Martin Luther King Jr., que pronunció la Nochebuena en Se dio en la Iglesia Bautista Ebenezer, donde se encontraba. El co-pastor y él elocuentemente hablan de paz. Puede ver o escuchar la relación a algunos de sus otros discursos y el hilo que recorre con sus palabras, el continúa hablando sobre la paz y la no violencia. Lamentablemente, sus palabras tienen mucho que decir al mundo en el que vivimos hoy, especialmente en nuestro país, casi como si nada hubiera cambiado desde esa noche hace poco más de 51 años. Mientras leía esto, la iglesia también estaba recordando una celebración que comenzó hace cincuenta años y es la Semana Nacional de la Migración. Este es un momento, del 6 al 12 de enero, en que la iglesia de este país nos llama a recordar, de manera especial, a los inmigrantes, migrantes, refugiados y víctimas de la trata de personas. Me doy cuenta de que mientras escribo esas palabras algunas personas se estremecerán, porque esos son los temas candentes en los que estamos inmersos en este momento. Por lo tanto, durante esta Semana Nacional de la Migración, sugiero que simplemente recordemos a nuestras hermanas y hermanos que han tenido que viajar lejos del hogar de sus antepasados (algunos de los cuales han vivido en ese lugar durante más de 1000 años). Debemos pensar en esos amados hijos de Dios de todas las edades que arriesgan sus vidas para proteger, cuidar o ayudar a su familia. Debemos pensar en esos pequeños amados que están esclavizados debido a la codicia que proviene de un lugar oscuro en los corazones de las personas que piensan que está bien poseer a otro ser humano. Deberíamos en lugar de usar la palabra refugiado, pensar en nuestros hijos y ver las sonrisas en sus rostros y, como sí recordamos, hay niños como ellos que nunca han vivido un día sin guerra o sin terminar su día con una oración para que lo hagan. Puede vivir para ver otro día. Como dijo el Dr. King, si consideramos la paz simplemente como un objetivo lejano que nunca alcanzaremos, pero si lo usamos como un medio que empleamos todos los días de nuestras vidas, nos acercamos más a hacer realidad ese sueño. La paz nos permite ver que en este mundo nos hemos vuelto interdependientes. La increíble imagen de la Tierra tomada de una nave espacial mientras estaba en órbita alrededor de la luna nos muestra que todos caminamos sobre una bola azul suspendida sin esfuerzo en medio de la oscuridad del espacio. Una nación no puede aislarse de las otras en esto, la Tierra de Dios, porque respiramos desde la misma atmósfera y nuestra sed se sacia del agua producida por el clima que está aquí un día y al día siguiente avanza por todo el mundo. En este último día de Navidad, pensemos en un sueño. No es un sueño simplemente para nosotros, sino para nuestros hijos, niños, niños para comenzar y preguntar si queremos que vivan en un mundo que está siempre en guerra? Queremos que crezcan en un mundo donde los muros continúan dividiendo a una persona de otra (por favor, piense en esto con cuidado, ya que ese día un muro puede impedir que sus descendientes busquen proteger y cuidar a sus bisnietos)? preferiríamos ver puentes construidos. (Lo bonito de esa imagen es que un título del Papa es Pontifex Maximus, que significa el gran constructor de puentes). Nuestra fe en Jesucristo siempre nos ha desafiado a que, si elegimos ser sus discípulos, veremos lo que Dios ve. No hay guatemaltecos ni americanos, ni esclavos ni libres, ni blancos ni negros, solo hay un Cuerpo de Cristo en el que todos somos partes. La única respuesta para nosotros ahora como lo fue para el Dr. King todas esas décadas atrás es compartir la paz de Cristo, ser personas de fe en nuestro Salvador. Con esta fe podremos acelerar el día en que habrá paz en la tierra y buena voluntad para todos. Será un día glorioso, las estrellas de la mañana cantarán juntas y los hijos de Dios gritarán de alegría ". En la paz de Cristo, Padre Gary
