2 FROM OUR PASTOR Pastor s Corner Today is Passion (Palm) Sunday and the beginning of Holy Week. This is the holiest week of the Christian Calendar. I would like to encourage you to make this week special. You are invited to participate at all of significant liturgies throughout the week, namely: Monday, March 25th, 7:00 pm. The annual Chrism Mass at the Cathedral of Our Lady of the Angels. This is one of the most important and impressive Masses of the year. Archbishop Jose Gomez will preside over this liturgy. Most of the priests of the Archdiocese try to attend this Mass. It is during this Holy Week Mass that the Holy Oils used throughout the Liturgical Year in all the churches are blessed, namely, the Oil of the Sick (OI), Oil of the Catechumen [Sacred OI] (OS) and Oil of Chrism (OC). These oils will be officially presented to our parish on Holy Thursday. Even though this Mass is in downtown Los Angeles all parishioners are welcome. Usually the Cathedral is filled to overflow capacity of nearly 5000 congregants. (The cathedral begins to be fill up by 6:00pm.) During the Triduum (Thursday, Friday and Saturday) there are no morning Masses celebrated. Instead at 8:00 am the Morning Prayer of the Church is prayed. Thursday, March 28th, 7:00 pm. Mass of the Lord s Supper. The Last Supper and the institution of the Eucharist is recalled. Twelve parishioners, serving in ministry in our parish, will have their feet washed to recall Jesus own washing of the feet of the Apostles. All the Eucharistic Ministers who serve in our parish will recommit to serving in our parish. At the conclusion of the Mass the entire congregation will process to the Parish Hall where the Altar of Repose (the Garden) has been set up for adoration until Midnight. Friday, March 29th, Good Friday. At 12:00 noon the living Stations of the Cross will be presented to our community by the graduating 8th Class from St. Mark School. At 1:00 pm. the traditional Good Friday service will be celebrated which includes the Proclamation of the Passion, the Veneration of the Cross and the Reception of Communion. Following this service the church will be closed so that the Environment Team and volunteers can transform our church into Easter joy. At 7:00pm the Spanish Prayer group will once again present their live outdoor Passion Play with costumed actors and music. Even though it is in Spanish all are welcome (if you don t speak Spanish don t worry because you already know the story). Saturday, March 30th, is Holy Saturday. There is only one Mass this day. The Great Easter Vigil Mass is celebrated at 7:00 pm and begins outside and in front of the church. During this Mass 8 individuals will be initiated into our church. It will be a glorious celebration to welcome them into our church on the Day of Resurrection. Sunday, March 31st, is Easter Sunday. We will follow our usual Sunday morning Mass schedule, namely: 7:30 am, 9:00 am, 10:30 am and 12:00 noon in Spanish. There will NOT be a 5:30 pm Mass on Easter Sunday. Crowds are big on Easter and parking will be limited on our lots. Parking will NOT be available, as in years past, at Coeur D Alene School down the block. Besides our lots parking will be only be available on the surrounding streets. Please respect our neighbors by not blocking their driveway entrances. May this Holy Week fill you all with God s saving grace and joy. Father Michael Rocha La Esquina del Párroco Hoy es Domingo de Pasión y el comienzo de la Semana Santa. Esta es la semana más sagrada del calendario Cristiano. Me gustaría animarlos a hacer esta semana especial. Están invitados a participar en todas las liturgias significativas durante toda la semana: Lunes, 25 de marzo a las 7.00pm. Misa Anual de Crisma en la Catedral de Nuestra Señora de los Ángeles. Esta es una de las Misas más importantes e impresionantes del año. El Arzobispo José Gómez presidirá esta liturgia. La mayoría de los sacerdotes de la Arquidiócesis tratan de asistir a esta Misa. Es durante esta Misa de Semana Santa que se bendicen los santos óleos que se usan durante todo el año litúrgico en todas las iglesias, a saber, el aceite de los enfermos (OI), aceite del catecúmeno [aceite Sagrado] (OS) y aceite de Crisma (OC). Estos aceites se presentarán oficialmente a nuestra parroquia el Jueves Santo. A pesar de que esta Misa se celebrara en el centro de Los Ángeles todos los feligreses son bienvenidos. Generalmente se llena la Catedral llegando a la capacidad de casi 5000 congregantes. (La Catedral se comienza a llenar alrededor de las 6.00pm. Durante el Triduo (el jueves, viernes y sábado) no se celebraban las Misas de la mañana. En su lugar a las 8:00am se va rezar la oración de la mañana de la iglesia. Jueves, 28 de marzo, a las 7.00pm se celebrara la Misa de la Cena del Señor. Se recuerda la última cena y la institución de la Eucaristía. A doce feligreses de los Ministerios de nuestra parroquia, se le van lavar sus pies para recordar el lavado de los pies de los apóstoles de Jesús. Todos los ministros eucarísticos que sirven en nuestra parroquia renovaran su compromiso a servir en nuestra parroquia. Al terminar la Misa toda la congregación ira en procesión al salón parroquial donde estará el Altar de Reposo (el jardín) para la adoración hasta la medianoche. Viernes, 29 de marzo, Viernes Santo. A las 12:00 del mediodía la clase del octavo grado de la escuela San Marcos presentara a nuestra comunidad el Vía Crucis viviente. A la 1.00pm se celebrara el servicio tradicional que incluye la proclamación de la pasión, la veneración de la Cruz y la recepción de la comunión. Después de este servicio se cerrará la iglesia para que el Equipo de medio ambiente y voluntarios puedan transformar nuestra iglesia en el gozo Pascual. A las 7.00pm el grupo de Oración Español presentará una vez más la pasión viviente al aire libre con música y actores disfrazados. Aunque sea en español, todos son bienvenidos (si no hablas español no te preocupes porque ya conocemos la historia). El sábado, 30 de marzo, es el Sábado Santo. Este día hay solamente una Misa. La gran Misa de vigilia de Pascua se celebra en 7.00pm y empieza afuera frente a la iglesia. Durante esta Misa 8 personas serán iniciados en nuestra iglesia. Será una celebración gloriosa darle la bienvenida a nuestra iglesia el día de la Resurrección. El domingo, 31 de marzo, es el domingo de Pascua. Seguiremos nuestro horario habitual del domingo a la mañana. Horario del Domingo de Pascua a la mañana: 7:30, 9:00, 10:30 y 12:00 mediodía en español. El Domingo de Pascua NO habrá Misa a las 5.30pm. El Domingo de Pascua viene mucha gente y el estacionamiento es limitado en nuestros lotes. NO habrá estacionamiento, como en anos anteriores, disponible en la escuela Coeur d ' Alene. Además de nuestros lotes de estacionamiento sólo habrá estacionamiento disponible en las calles de alrededor. Por favor respete a nuestros vecinos y no bloquee la entrada de automóvil de sus casas. Unified School District for permission to use their parking lot last Easter Sunday. The LAUSD charged us rent and permit fees totaling $650. Only about cars used the lot at the 9:00am Mass. It does not seem to be a good use of our funds for such a small number of cars. We will not be using their parking lot again. Please plan ahead - parking will only be available on our lots and surrounding streets. Come early and please do not block our neighbor s driveways. Thank you. 4 RELIGIOUS EDUCATION Easter Vigil All members of St. Mark Parish are invited to celebrate the Risen Christ at the Easter Vigil on Saturday March 30 at 7pm. During this joyful liturgy the three Elect and five Candidates will celebrate Full Initiation into the church. A parish reception will be held in the hall at the conclusion of the liturgy. 5 SAFE GUARD THE CHILDREN Release of the Files? Complying with a retired federal judge's order to edit priest personnel files intended for public release, attorneys for the Los Angeles Archdiocese are making the specified edits according to the judge's order. The judge's order was the result of a process that plaintiff attorneys and the Archdiocese agreed would be accepted by all parties involved. It is important to note that the judge's order specified the edits in part due to what he said were demonstrable positive changes the Archdiocese had already implemented to its policies and procedures in reporting abuse to authorities and in training personnel and children in abuse prevention techniques. Much of the information in the files is decades old and has already been the subject of in-depth coverage in the press and was disclosed by the Archdiocese in the 2004 Report to the People of God.
