Este rito normalmente coincide con el primer domingo de Cuaresma. En este rito, son testigos los padrinos y catequistas, de la intencion de los catecúmenos de unirse a la Iglesia. La Iglesia hace su "elección" de estos catecúmenos para recibir los Sacramentos de Iniciación durante la Vigilia Pascual. En presencia del obispo (o su delegado), inscriben sus nombres en el Libro de los Elegidos como prenda de fidelidad. Ahora los catecúmenos son llamados "los elegidos" o "los illuminandi" ("los que serán iluminados") y ahora comienzan un Período de Purificación e Iluminación - la preparación final e intensa para la recepción de los Sacramentos de Iniciación. THE RITE OF ELECTION The Rite of Election closes the Period of the Catechumenate. This rite normally coincides with the first Sunday of Lent. At this rite, upon the testimony of sponsors and catechists and the catechumens' affirmation of their intention to join the Church, the Church makes its "election" of these catechumens to receive the Sacraments of Initiation. In the presence of the bishop (or his delegate), they inscribe their names in the Book of the Elect as a pledge of fidelity. Now the catechumens are called "the elect' or "the illuminandi" ("those who will be enlightened").
