Isaiah 40:11 The Most Holy Body and Blood of Christ We are often told that the miracle of the multiplication of the loaves and fishes that we read about in today`s Gospel [Matthew 14:15-21] prefigures the mystery of the Holy Eucharist. Indeed, when we look closely, we discover that the circumstances of this miracle do resemble those of the Eucharist. With just five loaves and two fishes, Jesus feeds a crowd of five thousand persons. The leftover fragments are able to fill twelve baskets. How is this to be explained, except by the divine power of Jesus? Once, when St. Thomas Aquinas was invited to compose a hymn to the Eucharist, in order to pay homage to this mystery and wishing to make reference to the multiplication of the loaves, he wrote: Whether one sole person or thousands partake, He gives himself to the one or the many; He feeds without ever being consumed. Here again is an acknowledgment of the similarity between the multiplication of loaves and the Eucharist. El Cuerpo y la Sangre de Cristo El milagro de la multiplicación de los panes y los peces que leemos en el Evangelio de hoy (Mateo 14:15-21) anticipa el misterio de La Santa Eucaristía. En realidad podemos ver que estos dos eventos son parecidos. Con solo cinco panes y dos peces, Jesús le da de comer a una multitud de cinco mil personas. Comieron todos y se saciaron y de lo que sobro se llenaron doce canastos. Como se puede explicar esto, sino por el divino poder de Jesús? Una vez Santo Thomas Aquinas fue invitado a escribir un himno para hacerle homenaje a la Eucaristía y deseando también hacer homenaje a la multiplicación de los panes, el escribió: Aunque sea la participación de una sola persona o la participación de miles de personas, El da su cuerpo a uno solo o a la multitud; El da de comer sin ser consumido totalmente. He aquí nuevamente la semejanza entre la multiplicación de los panes y la Eucaristía. Le Saint Sacrement du Corps et du Sang du Christ On a souvent dit que le miracle de la multiplication des pains que nous lisons dans l évangile annonce le mystère de l eucharistie. En effet, quand on regarde de près, nous découvrons que les circonstances de ce miracle ressemblent au miracle de nos eucharisties. Avec cinq pains et deux poissons Jésus donne à manger à une foule de cinq mille hommes environ. Les morceaux qui restaient pouvaient remplir douze paniers. Comment expliquer cela sans l attribuer au pouvoir divin de Jésus? Saint Thomas d Aquin, invité à composer un hymne à l eucharistie, rend hommage à ce mystère, et comme s il voulait faire référence à la multiplication des pains il écrit: qu un seul ou mille communient, il se donne à l un comme aux autres, il nourrit sans disparaître. Voilà encore une autre reconnaissance de la similitude qui existe entre le mystère de l eucharistie et la multiplication des pains. He said to them, Give them some food yourselves. They replied, Five loaves and two fish are all we have. Now the men numbered about five thousand. Then he said to his disciples, Have them sit down in groups of about fifty. They did so and made them all sit down. Then taking the five loaves and the two fish, and looking up to heaven, he said the blessing over them and gave them to the disciples to set before the crowd. They all ate and were satisfied. And when the leftover fragments were picked up, they filled twelve wicker baskets.

TODAY FOR CHURCH IN AFRICA A second collection will be taken at all of this weekend s masses to benefit the Pastoral Solidarity Fund, a goal of which is to strengthen the Catholic Church in Africa. Fostering vocations to the religious life and educating the young are among the principal concerns of this Fund. We are grateful to the Church in Africa for the present service of Fr. Agbedo (Nigeria), and we remember fondly the recent service of Fr. Mwampela (Tanzania) So, please be generous. SAVE THE DATE SAT. More than once, members of your Parish Team have suggested that St, Gregory s should institute some kind of performing arts program to use our space and perhaps to attract more attention to the Parish. After all, they say, we have a lot of talented musicians, dancers, theater people, writers and artists as frequent or occasional parishioners. The suggestion is that St. Gregory s might put on a series of vocal and instrumental concerts, dance performances, poetry readings, one-act plays and the like, to gain some recognition (and maybe cash and new parishioners) for the Parish. Such suggestions, however, go nowhere without a dedicated and energetic committee to embrace and develop them. The Pastoral Team is not the right group to work on this. Let us know if you would like to be part of such a committee. LAST OF ASCENSION PARISH LECTURE SERIES The R.C. Church of the Ascension reminds us that the last of its Year of Faith lecture series will take place Thursday evening, June 5, at 7:30 p.m. The speaker is Fr. But yesterday something unusual, though personal to the writer, happened here, and the writer feels compelled to mention it. Saturday, our son Paul, who was baptized, confirmed and raised in the Parish, was married in our church by Msgr. Crimmins to the lovely Anne Fleming of Severna Park, Maryland. For several reasons, weddings are infrequent at St. Gregory s. So please excuse this bit of parental pride, and please join me in this message to Paul from his eponym: Husbands, love your wives, even as Christ also loved the Church and gave himself for it; So ought men to love their wives as their own bodies. He that loves his wife loves himself. For no man ever yet hated his own flesh; but nourishes and cherishes it, even as the Lord the church; For this reason shall a man leave his father and mother, and shall be joined unto his wife, and they too shall be one flesh. Su preciosa novia y ahora su esposa es Anne Fleming de Severna Park, Maryland. Le quiero mandar este mensaje a Paul: Maridos, amen a sus esposas como Cristo amo a la iglesia y se entrego a si mismo por ella; Así deben también los maridos amar a sus esposas como aman a sus propios cuerpos. Amar a la esposa es amarse a si mismo. Y nadie aborrece su cuerpo; al contrario, lo alimenta y lo cuida. Y eso es justamente lo que Cristo hace por la Iglesia. But it need not be that way. One way you can fight the drop-off is by joining ParishPay (call the Rectory Office for more information about that). Another way is by simply doubling up or tripling up in your return week s contribution if you are away from here for two or three weeks.
