1 Page 1 of 5 SCABIES PROCEDURE Scabies is a skin infestation caused by a human mite. For description and period of communicability refer to Scabies in the Infectious Disease Control Guide for School Staff. Classroom Procedure 1. When you suspect a child has scabies, call the parent and share your concern. Check all children for further cases. 2. Request the parent pick the child up from school and take him/her to their medical provider for assessment and/or treatment. Also, have the parent check other family members for scabies. 3. When the parent arrives to take the child home, show them the appearance and location of the infected areas, and re-state the need for further assessment and treatment. 4. Offer the parent a copy of the SCABIES pamphlet to take with them. 5. Let them know the child may return to class after providing documentation that the child has been seen and/or treated by a medical provider. 6. If you cannot reach the parent by phone, or if the parent is unable to pick their child up, send the SCABIES letter and pamphlet home on the bus with the child. 7. Document the referral in the child s file and notify the Health Services Staff. 8. If the child returns to class with a positive diagnosis of scabies, send the Scabies Exposure letter home with all the children notifying parents of the case, possible symptoms and whom to contact.

I observed the following: Please call your medical provider and let them know of my concern. If symptoms continue, we will need a note from your medical provider stating it is all right for your child to be in the classroom environment. I am enclosing a pamphlet with information about scabies. If you have questions, please call me at the center, or contact the Health Services Staff at (360) for Mason/Thurston Counties or at (360) for Grays Harbor County. Thank you! 4 Page 4 of 5 Scabies Exposure Letter Date: Dear Parent, Your child may have been exposed to scabies at the Head Start/ECEAP Center. This note does not mean that your child has scabies, only that he/she has been exposed to them. Scabies or itch is caused by a tiny mite, so small it can scarcely be seen under a microscope. The female burrows under the skin to lay her eggs, producing the small red rash and the intense itching. The itch mite may affect all parts of the body, but at first it usually gets under the skin in the webs of the fingers, on the wrist, forearms, elbows, inner side of the thighs, and on the abdomen (especially around the waist, or belt line). Itching may be more severe at night. You may want to check your child to see if you can see any rash or any area your child seems to be scratching a lot. If you suspect that your child has scabies, contact your medical provider for an appointment. If you do take your child to his/her medical provider and he/she is diagnosed as having scabies, please notify your child s teacher or the Health Services Staff. If you have questions, please call me at the center, or contact the Health Services Staff at (360) for Mason/Thurston Counties or at (360) for Grays Harbor County. Thank you. 5 Page 5 of 5 Scabies Exposure Letter / Carta sobre exposición a la sarna Fecha (Date): Estimados padres, Su hijo puede haber estado expuesto a la sarna en el centro de Head Start/ECEAP. Esta nota no significa que su hijo tenga sarna, sólo que ha estado expuesto a ella. La sarna es provocada por un pequeño ácaro, tan pequeño que apenas se lo puede ver con un microscopio. La hembra anida bajo la piel para depositar sus huevos, con lo que produce un pequeño sarpullido rojo y la comezón intensa. El ácaro de la sarna puede afectar a todas las partes del cuerpo, pero al principio generalmente se introduce bajo la piel entre los dedos de la mano, en las muñecas, en los antebrazos, en los codos, en la parte interna de los muslos y en el abdomen (especialmente alrededor de la cintura o la línea del cinturón). La comezón puede ser más intensa por la noche. Posiblemente quieran examinar a su hijo para ver si pueden encontrar algún sarpullido o alguna región en la que su hijo pueda estar rascándose mucho. Si sospechan que su hijo tiene sarna, comuníquense con su médico para pedirle una cita. Si efectivamente llevan a su hijo al médico y se le hace el diagnóstico de sarna, por favor, avisen al maestro o maestra de su hijo o al personal de servicios de salud. Si tienen alguna pregunta, por favor, llámenme al centro, o comuníquense con el personal de servicios de salud al (360) para los condados de Mason y Thurston o al (360) para el condado de Grays Harbor.
