INNOVATING IN TIMES OF CRISIS It is easy to state that crises, as phenomena that destabilize economic, political and social structures, are accompanied by the opportunities inherent in any process of change. However, it is not so easy to act in accordance with the above statement for evident reasons, in view of the fact that crises generate changes, while changes in turn generate uncertainty and, in many cases, rejection. A solid organisational culture is needed to successfully tackle a process such as the one we are now experiencing and to detect opportunities where others see only threats. first spin-off that arises from said laboratory, to coordinate the setting up of the European platform for the application of Nanotechnologies in the field of Industrial Production, to draw up collaboration agreements with prestigious institutions devoted to scientific and technological development, to increase our staff so as to be able to devote more effort and resources to innovating hand-in-hand with companies from our region, and to substantially increase our client portfolio, which has ultimately meant a significant increase in turnover, especially in terms of competitive income. All of this has been done without ceasing to carry out those projects and activities initiated in The successful track record of our Technology Centre, previous years. the PRODINTEC Foundation, could have been checked during 2009 by the economic situation if far-reaching decisions had not been taken. These decisions had different targets, with the ultimate goal of growing as a public-private body whose mission is to help companies develop both technologically and industrially. The following are a sample of these strategic manoeuvres: to initiate the necessary activities so as to have at our disposal new facilities, equipped with greater physical space to undertake R&D and Innovation projects and activities, to start-up Spain s first electrical vehicles laboratory, to accompany the At our foundation, we are aware of the difficulties that society as a whole is experiencing at this moment in time. INNOVANDO EN TIEMPOS DE CRISIS Es fácil decir que las crisis, como fenómenos que desestabilizan estructuras económicas, políticas y sociales, conllevan oportunidades inherentes a todo proceso de cambio. Sin embargo, no es tan fácil obrar en consecuencia con la afirmación anterior por motivos evidentes, ya que las crisis generan cambios, los cambios generan a su vez incertidumbre y, en muchos casos, rechazo. Se requiere una cultura organizativa sólida para afrontar con éxito un proceso como el que estamos viviendo y detectar oportunidades donde otros sólo ven amenazas. La exitosa trayectoria de nuestro Centro Tecnológico Fundación PRODINTEC pudo verse truncada a lo largo de 2009 por la coyuntura económica si no se hubiesen adoptado decisiones de alcance. Tales decisiones se orientaron en distintas direcciones, con el objetivo final de crecer como organismo público-privado cuya misión es ayudar a las empresas en su desarrollo tecnológico e industrial. Algunos de estos movimientos estratégicos han sido los siguientes: iniciar las actividades necesarias para disponer de nuevas instalaciones, dotadas de mayor espacio físico para realizar proyectos y actividades de I+D+i, poner en marcha el primer laboratorio de movilidad eléctrica de España, acompañar a la primera spin-off que surge de dicho laboratorio, coordinar la puesta en marcha de la plataforma europea para la aplicación de la Nanotecnología en el ámbito de la Producción Industrial, articular convenios de colaboración con prestigiosas instituciones dedicadas al desarrollo científico y tecnológico, incrementar la plantilla de trabajadores para dedicar más esfuerzos y recursos a innovar de la mano de las empresas de nuestra región, y aumentar sustancialmente la cartera de clientes, lo que ha supuesto finalmente un incremento importante del volumen de facturación, especialmente en el capítulo de ingresos competitivos. Todo ello sin dejar de realizar los proyectos y actividades iniciados en los años anteriores. En nuestra fundación somos conscientes de las dificultades que atraviesa el conjunto de la sociedad en estos momentos. La red de centros tecnológicos de nuestro país no es ajena a esta situación, por lo que debemos prepararnos para afrontar desde una perspectiva aún más competitiva el futuro de un proyecto tan singular como es la Fundación PRODINTEC. Sin embargo, estamos convencidos que el equipo de personas de PRODINTEC reúne la necesaria experiencia y el imprescindible arrojo para seguir, de la mano de todos los implicados, innovando en tiempos de crisis. The PRODINTEC Foundation is a private nonprofit entity created in 2004 on the initiative of a group of firms in the region and the Regional Government and forms part of the network of Technology Centres of the Principality of Asturias. As the Asturias Technology Centre for Industrial Design and Production, our mission is: "To foster the competitiveness of Asturian industrial firms by applying technological advances both to their products and to their manufacturing and management processes". standard (quality management systems) and the UNE 166002 standard (R&D and Innovation management system), being the first technology system in Spain to receive this integrated certification. Furthermore, the Foundation was registered as an Innovation and Technology Centre (no. 99) by the Spanish Ministry of Industry on 27th March 2007. We obtained AENOR certification in 2005 in accordance with the UNE- EN ISO 9001:2000
La Fundación PRODINTEC es una entidad privada sin ánimo de lucro creada en 2004, por iniciativa de un grupo de empresas de la región, y por el Gobierno Regional, formando parte de la red de Centros Tecnológicos del Principado de Asturias. Como Centro Tecnológico para el Diseño y la Producción Industrial de Asturias, nuestra misión es: "Potenciar la competitividad de las empresas industriales asturianas aplicando avances tecnológicos tanto a sus productos como a sus procesos de fabricación y de gestión". staff opinions ANA GARCÍA LORENZO Technical advisor, R&D and Innovation Area DAVID RIOL BLANCO Technical advisor, Industrial Design Area The PRODINTEC Foundation is a good place to work. On a day-to-day basis, you can notice that the people working here like the job they are doing. The team is young, professional and motivated, and I think that it is managing to keep in very close contact with companies. From the R&D and Innovation Area, we carry out activities such as the management of R&D and Innovation projects or the auditing of R&D and Innovation management systems in different sized companies in different activity sectors. This enables you to keep up-to-date with respect to the latest novelties and advances in these sectors and to have a broad view of the R&D and Innovation activities that are being carried out in Asturias as well as in other Autonomous Communities. We are constantly learning. I have been working at the PRODINTEC Foundation since June 2005 and find the growth that it has undergone in these years in terms of R&D and Innovation projects, turnover, number of clients or national and international visibility amazing. It is gratifying to think that each one of us is contributing to a certain extent to the achievement of these results. It is sometimes difficult for me to reply when someone asks me what my job entails. I really do not know where to start. On occasions I say that my job consists in providing support to companies via the latest technologies and knowledge; on other occasions, that I carry out R&D and Innovation projects; while to other people I simply say that I work with a computer doing jobs for industrial firms. However, what I always end up saying is that I carry out a range of highly varied activities linked at all times to business development and, on occasion, to the social development of the region. I have to be sincere. There are activities that I enjoy more than others and the result of a project is not always the desired one (you have to bear in mind that research is a component with a lot of weight in many of our projects), but there is something positive to be got out of all of them: we learn from our mistakes and take note of what we did right for future jobs. What I have no doubt about replying to is when people ask me if I like my job; the answer is, of course, YES. 26
ANA GARCÍA LORENZO Técnico del área de Gestión de I+D+i Fundación PRODINTEC es un buen lugar para trabajar. En el día a día se nota que al personal le gusta la labor que lleva a cabo. El equipo es joven, profesional y motivado, y creo que se está logrando mantener un contacto muy cercano con las empresas. Desde el Área de Gestión de I+D+i realizamos actividades como la gestión de proyectos de I+D+i o la auditoría de sistemas de gestión de I+D+i de empresas de distintos tamaños y sectores de actividad, lo que te permite estar al corriente de las últimas novedades y avances en esos sectores y tener una visión amplia de las actividades de I+D+i que se están realizando tanto en Asturias como en otras Comunidades Autónomas. Estamos en aprendizaje continuo. Llevo trabajando en Fundación PRODINTEC desde junio de 2005 y me resulta increíble el crecimiento que se ha experimentando en estos años de actividad en términos de proyectos de I+D+i, facturación, número de clientes o visibilidad nacional e internacional. Resulta gratificante pensar que cada uno de nosotros estamos contribuyendo en cierta medida a que se alcancen estos resultados. DAVID RIOL BLANCO Técnico del área de Diseño Industrial A veces me es difícil responder cuando alguien me pregunta en qué consiste mi trabajo. Realmente no sé por dónde empezar. En ocasiones digo que consiste en dar apoyo a las empresas mediante las últimas tecnologías y conocimientos, otras, que llevo a cabo a cabo proyectos de I+D+i y a otras personas les digo simplemente que trabajo con un ordenador para las empresas industriales. No obstante, lo que al final siempre acabo diciendo es que realizo multitud de actividades muy variadas y ligadas siempre al desarrollo empresarial y en ocasiones también al desarrollo social de la región. Hay que ser sincero: hay actividades con las que disfruto más que otras y no siempre el resultado de los proyecto es el deseado (hay que tener en cuenta que en muchos de nuestros proyectos la investigación es un componente que tiene mucho peso), Pero de todas ellas se saca algo positivo: aprendemos de los errores. De lo que no tengo duda en responder es cuando la gente me pregunta si me gusta mi trabajo; la respuesta es por supuesto SÍ. No sólo en lo que se refiere a la

Auditoria tecnológica / Benchmarking Análisis del nivel tecnológico que una empresa (o un sector) y la comparación con el estado de la técnica al nivel geográfico que se defina (regional, nacional o international). PRODINTEC actúa como entidad independiente con objeto de poder comparar e identificar las mejores prácticas.

Advanced manufacturing systems for parts and tools Rapid manufacturing of functional parts directly from 3D CAD models using powdered material (plastic, metal, etc.), without the need for moulds or dies, by means of the depositing of layers of material. High-speed and simultaneous 5-axis milling: Cutting-edge technologies at the disposal of firms to carry out studies on tool-material-speed suitability, the creation of pathways or optimization of machining processes by means of CAM. High-speed micromachining with an absolute precision of around one micron, and surface finishes of just over 100 nanometres. Robotization of highly complex processes: 7-axis milling, friction welding and incremental deformation of plates. Metrology using MMC touch probe and optical systems (3D scanning and photogrammetry) that enable complex surfaces to be digitalized quickly, precisely and without any geometric limitation.
Sistemas avanzados de fabricación de piezas y utillajes Fabricación directa (Rapid Manufacturing) de piezas funcionales directamente del modelo CAD 3D a partir de material en polvo (plástico, metal,...), sin necesidad de moldes o matrices, mediante deposición de capas de material. Arranque de viruta en Alta velocidad y 5 ejes simultáneos: Tecnologías de vanguardia a disposición de las empresas para realizar estudios de idoneidad herramienta-materialvelocidad, creación de trayectorias u optimización de procesos de mecanizado asistido por CAM. Micromecanizado en alta velocidad con precisiones absolutas del entorno de la micra, y acabados superficiales de poco más de 100 nanómetros. Robotización de procesos de alta complejidad: tallado de piezas en 7 ejes, soldadura por fricción y deformación incremental de chapas. Metrología por palpado en MMC y por medio de sistemas ópticos (escaneado 3D y fotogrametría) que permiten digitalizar superficies complejas de forma rápida, precisa y sin limitaciones geométricas.
