How does Select Bus Service change and improve my ride? Select Bus Service introduces innovative changes to the way buses operate: You pay BEFORE boarding You can board the bus using any door Dedicated bus lanes between 1st Ave and 11 Ave speed service between stops All these elements will make your trip faster. Note: the new name for the M16 is the M34A. Are the new bus signs and fare machines part of this new service? Yes. New bus stop signs and fare machines clearly mark SBS stops. You pay your fare with a MetroCard or coins at the stop BEFORE you board the bus, and get a ticket/receipt. You must board at the stop where you paid your fare and complete your Select Bus Service trip within one hour. Your ticket/receipt is valid only for the M34 or M34A SBS routes. If you transfer to the M15 SBS route, you must obtain a new ticket/receipt from the M15 SBS fare machines. What hours does the new service operate? Most stops are the same as the old M34/M16 service, but some stops have changed. See the list of stops in this brochure for the location of Select Bus Service stops. Can I pay on the bus if I want to? No. You MUST pay before boarding the bus. How do the fare collection machines work? Both machines accept fares and issue tickets/ receipts. See diagrams and instructions in this brochure. Neither machine sells nor refills MetroCard, and they do not make change. Do I give my receipt to the bus operator? No. You don t give or show your ticket/receipt to the driver UNLESS you paid with coins and need a transfer. Please board at the front of the bus if you need a transfer. How do Transit personnel know that I paid my fare? You must keep your ticket/receipt for the duration of your trip. Fare inspectors randomly check for them. Anyone who cannot produce a valid receipt could be subject to a summons. Can I use my receipt on other bus routes? No. Receipts cannot be used to board any other bus. If transferring to the M15 SBS route, you must obtain a second ticket/receipt from M15 fare machines. Your transfer is free when you use MetroCard, but you must get a new ticket/receipt from an M15 SBS fare machine. Can I pay with a Return-Trip ticket? Yes. Just board the bus. You don t need to get a receipt from the fare collector machines. Your NYC Transit Return-Trip Ticket serves as a receipt. Just show your ticket to a fare inspector upon request. What if I can t obtain a receipt or have some other problem? Take down the machine number. If a machine is not working, please board the bus and tell the bus operator. If a machine does not issue a receipt or return your MetroCard or coins, ask the bus operator for a business reply envelope or call 511.
