General description and objectives Intensive study and practice of sight translation, consecutive and simultaneous interpreting with close reference to terminology, documentation, ethics and other professional issues. The focus of this course is to provide an in depth study of and intensive practice with medical terminology. The use of the specialized language of medicine and science is the foundation for appropriate and accurate communication in patient care, scientific research, health management and with other professionals. In this course of study the students will: 1. Acquire medical vocabulary, knowledge of medical terminology, and of terminology reference materials. 2. Demonstrate the meaning of complex medical terms by analyzing word components in both English and Spanish 3. Use medical terms with a high degree of accuracy to lessen communication errors when translating or interpreting documents in both English and Spanish 4. Demonstrate an understanding of medical specialties, subsystems and subspecialties based on the study of terminology in both English and Spanish. 5. Translate and/or interpret medical documents, as well as articles and/or reports of medical organizations to demonstrate an advanced command of medical terminology. The above objectives are aligned with the following program's Student Learning Outcomes 1. Students will translate specialized texts from English into Spanish and Spanish into English in the area of medical translation at a professional or quasi professional level. 2. Students will be able to perform consecutive interpreting at a professional level. 2
Unit Learning Objectives UNIT 1 To acquire medical vocabulary, knowledge of medical terminology, and medical terminology of the body organization. Students will also demonstrate the meaning of complex medical terms by analyzing word components in both English and Spanish. To acquire knowledge about medical records and national standards of practice for interpreters in the healthcare field. To translate and/or interpret medical documents, as well as articles and/or reports of medical organizations to demonstrate basic command of medical terminology. UNIT 2 To acquire medical vocabulary, knowledge of medical terminology, and medical terminology of the musculoskeletal system. Students will also demonstrate the meaning of complex medical terms by analyzing word components in both English and Spanish pertaining to those systems. To acquire knowledge of ethical principles and protocols of the healthcare interpreter. To translate and/or interpret medical documents, as well as articles and/or reports of medical organizations to demonstrate a basic/intermediate command of medical terminology. UNIT 3 To acquire medical vocabulary, knowledge of medical terminology, and medical terminology of the cardiovascular, lymphatic, and immune systems. Students will also demonstrate the meaning of complex medical terms by analyzing word components in both English and Spanish pertaining to those systems. To acquire knowledge of the roles of the interpreter in the healthcare field. To translate and/or interpret medical documents, as well as articles and/or reports of medical organizations to demonstrate an intermediate command of medical terminology. UNIT 4 To acquire medical vocabulary, knowledge of medical terminology, and medical terminology of the respiratory and digestive systems. Students will also demonstrate the meaning of complex medical terms by analyzing of word components in both English and Spanish pertaining to those systems. To acquire knowledge of the cultural proficiency of the interpreter in the healthcare field. To translate and/or interpret medical documents, as well as articles and/or reports of medical organizations to demonstrate an intermediate/advanced command of medical terminology. UNIT 5 To acquire medical vocabulary, knowledge of medical terminology, and medical terminology of the integumentary and urinary systems, they will also demonstrate the meaning of complex medical terms by analyzing word components in both English and Spanish pertaining to those systems. To acquire knowledge of the cultural proficiency of the interpreter in the healthcare field. To translate and/or interpret medical documents, as well as articles and/or reports of medical organizations to demonstrate an advanced command of medical terminology. 3
