Page 2 SECTION A TRANSLATION Translate this text into Spanish On November 8th of last year, Susana advised her daughter Elena to stop working at five that afternoon and not return to work until January 2nd to compensate for the salary difference between men and women. Susana explained that if you are a woman in Spain, you work for no pay between November 8th and January 2nd due to the pay gap between men and women. Elena replied to her mother: If I had known that according to 2015 Eurostat data, the gender pay gap was 14.9%, I would have tried to find a solution to the problem of gender inequality with my colleagues. This is a great opportunity to achieve cultural change as we may be able to organise a committee of men, women and transgender people to work on this important issue. I have just contacted my colleagues and they have told me that we should carry out a social awareness campaign within the company to find practical solutions. One of the biggest concerns is that only one in three managers is a woman, even though women are practically half of all employees. Moreover, these executive women earn 23.4% less than men. Elena investigated the published data on the pay gap in Spain and found that the average salary of women is 1,661 euros (11.30 euros per hour), compared to 2,075 euros for men (12.30 euros per hour). According to EL PAÍS, women have more contracts with lower salaries, mainly because they have more temporary contracts that tend to have lower rates per hour. For this question, students were required to have addressed most or all aspects of the essay question demonstrating an ability to use their own faculties of self-reflection, criticality and imagination to produce effective, coherent and articulate arguments. Markers assessed the standard of presentation, structure and organisation of this essay, in addition to grammatical accuracy and competent use of a wide range of vocabulary and expression. Fluency in writing, correct spelling and use of punctuation were important in the award of marks.
