Enterovirus D68 is a virus that causes symptoms similar to those of a cold or flu such as cough, sneezing, runny nose, body aches and fever. Most Enterovirus D68 infections are mild; however, a small number of people may have more serious symptoms such as severe wheezing or difficulty breathing. It is important to inform school staff and parents/guardians about Enterovirus D68 so that they can seek medical attention when needed. HOW: Please distribute the attached Enterovirus D68 letter to parents/guardians in the weekly packets and/or place on school loop. Post the attached Enterovirus D68 infographic at your school site. Prevent transmission of Enterovirus D68 at school: -Wash hands often with soap and water for 20 seconds. Hand washing with soap works better than hand sanitizer against Enterovirus D68. -Avoid touching eyes, nose and mouth with unwashed hands. -Avoid kissing, hugging and sharing cups or utensils with people who are sick. -If you are sick, cover your coughs and sneezes. -Avoid contact with sick persons. -Disinfect frequently touched services, especially if someone is sick. -Stay home when you are ill. We recommend that ALL STUDENTS AND STAFF GET A FLU SHOT to prevent influenza (flu) caused by other viruses.
