2 INTRODUCTION This report covers a 4-week independent trip to Mitú, Santa Marta, The Darién lowlands, the Choco region and the Western and Central Andes of Colombia by Raf Drijvers and David Van den Schoor. It was already my fourth visit to Colombia, let s say more or less a clean up trip. We both had seen the more widespread species of this area on previous trips, so the focus was mainly on lifers, endemics and a few possible future-splits. We managed to see (or hear) 806 species. All in all, we had a very successful trip, which can be recommended! I have now seen 67 endemics (Clements taxonomy), still a few to go but I ll wait a couple of years until the Giles Fuertes s Parrot Bird Reserve will be open to the public again and until the south is safer, to look for species as Gorgeted Puffleg Eriocnemis isabellae. I m not going to write a true trip report, as Pablo Florez and Jurgen Beckers have just released their guide, "Birdwatching in Colombia"; This book includes specific maps, contacts, costs, and photos of rare birds. TOUR SERVICES To arrange the logistics for this trip we used Multicolor Birding Colombia ( of my friend Pablo Florez again, since we were happy with his service offered last time. We booked our international and internal Satena flights ourselves and Pablo arranged all the rest: local guides, hotels, 4WD with driver, etc. After some s back and forth we agreed on the itinerary and price. Pablo also gave us a cell phone so we stayed in daily contact and the final details could be discussed. FLIGHT We flew from Brussels to Bogota via The United States with Delta Airlines for 1.260,00 EUR return, taxes included. Much too expensive! Our domestic flights (8 in total) were operated by Satena (6) and Avianca (2). We paid ,00 COP per person which was okay. Only at Bahia Solano, they charged an additional departure fee of ,00 COP per person. We booked the Satena flights via many months in advance without any problems but we had trouble booking the Avianca flights, Pablo arranged these ones for us. Take note that the flight schedules of Satena are not reliable! They change constantly, even during your trip, so you should regularly check. They are often delayed and they fly only during the daytime hours. Our return flight from Apartado to Medellin was delayed and cancelled for that reason. And because the flights for the next morning were all fully booked, we had to get back to Medellin by night bus. The procedure to get your money back is complicated, so all extra costs were for ourselves! Book mainly for this reason no return flight with Satena on the last day of your stay. Another important thing to remember is that there are two airports at Medellin. The Satena flights leave from Olaya Herrera domestic Airport (located in the center of Medellin) while all Avianca flights depart from José María Córdova International Airport. The latter lies along the new Las Palmas express way, about 40 minutes from the city center. ELECTRICITY Electric appliances operate on an alternating current, the same as the United States volts, 60 cycles (Hertz) AC. So, American-styled two-pin plugs are most common.

3 HEALTH AND SAFETY Travellers need to be particularly cautious with respect to what they eat and drink and to insect bites. Hepatitis A and Typhoid Fever are the two most common diseases transmitted through food and water. Yellow Fever and Malaria are the most common diseases transmitted by insects. health section provides an overview of these and other medical considerations for those travelling in Colombia. Health is always an issue of concern for people travelling abroad. Most travellers stay healthy throughout their journeys and return home as fit as ever. You have little to worry about if you educate yourself and take sensible precautions. The last few years, the Andean region is considered one of the safer places in Colombia. Colombia's urban centres, especially Bogota and Medellin are large cities and like almost any large city in the world, are generally more dangerous than the countryside. LANGUAGE Colombia is a country were English is not spoken widely, so at least a rudimentary command of Spanish will be helpful. Some of the younger generation in the bigger cities speak a little English and genuinely tried to help when we had language difficulties.
