1 23 August 2010 Hotel Tourism Short-Term Trends (HOS/HPI/ADR/REVPAR) July Overnight stays at hotel establishments increase 7.2% in July, as compared with the same month in 2009 Hotels earn 47.2 euros per available room and invoice an average of 74.1 euros per occupied room During the month of July, 35.1 million overnight stays were recorded in hotel establishments, indicating a 7.2% increase as compared with the same month in This increase in overnight stays took place for both residents, whose interannual rate stood at 1.8%, and nonresidents, with an interannual variation of 11.1%. The average stay decreased 1.4% as compared with July 2009, standing at 3.7 nights per guest. During the first seven months of the year, overnight stays increased 5.0% with regard to the same period the previous year. In turn, the Hotel Price Index (HPI) registered a 0.8% decrease in July, this rate being 5.7 points higher than that registered in the same month of Regarding the indicators on the profitability of the hotel sector, invoicing per occupied room reached an average value of 74.1 euros (0.9 euros more than in July 2009), and income per available room stood at 47.2 euros (2.5 euros more than one year ago). In terms of occupancy, 64.0% of the available bedplaces were filled in July, indicating a 4.0% increase as compared with the same month the previous year. The weekend occupancy rate by bedplaces stood at 66.4%, with an interannual growth of 1.4%. 2 Overnight stays of guests resident abroad Guests from Germany and the United Kingdom made 10.8 million overnight stays in July. The German market experienced an interannual increase of 3.0% in overnight stays, while the British market grew 12.4%. Overnight stays of guests from France, and Italy (the following markets) registered interannual rates of 17.4% and 14.8%, respectively. In this Autonomous Community, overnight stays by foreign nationals grew 10.1% as compared with July It was followed by Cataluña, with an interannual rate of 13.2%, and Canarias, with a rate of 17.9%. Andalucía, Comunitat Valenciana and Cataluña were the main destinations of guests resident in Spain, with interannual rates for overnight stays of 2.2%, 2.9% and 9.2%, respectively. 3 Results by Autonomous Community, tourist area and tourist site Illes Balears was the Autonomous Community with the highest occupancy rate by bedplaces during the month of July (85.9%), ahead of Canarias (70.2%) and Cataluña (69.8%). The tourist areas with the highest occupancy and overnight stay rates were located on the islands and the coasts. Menorca reached the highest occupancy rate by bedplaces (88.0%) while Ibiza-Formentera reached the highest weekend occupancy rate by bedplaces (85.5%). Mallorca registered 6.8 million overnight stays in July. The tourist sites with the highest number of overnight stays were Barcelona, Calviá and Madrid. Muro reached the highest occupancy rate by bedplaces (96.9%), while Sant Josep de Sa Talaia reached the highest weekend occupancy rate (95.0%). Evolution of the Hotel Price Index The interannual rate of the HPI stood at 0.8% in July, this rate being 0.6 points higher than that obtained last month, and 5.2 points higher than that registered one year ago. 2 HPI Interannual variation rate Jul-09 Aug-09 Sep-09 Oct-09 Nov-09 Dec-09 Jan-10 Feb-10 Mar-10 Apr-10 May-10 Jun-10 Jul-10 HPI by Autonomous Community The four Autonomous Communities (Illes Balears, Cataluña, Andalucía and Canarias) with a combined weight of 71.7% of the total weight of the HPI in the month of July, showed uneven behaviour as compared with June Illes Balears, which carried the greatest load in the weighting structure this month, presented an interannual rate of -0.1%, that is, 2.2 points higher than that estimated in June. Hotel prices experienced an increase of 2.3% in Cataluña, as compared with the 1.6% registered the previous month. Andalucía showed an interannual rate of 2.1%, the same as that observed last month. In Canarias, the interannual rate was 3.3%, that is, 0.1 points more than that obtained in the month of June. 3

4 HPI by category Hotel prices decreased in July, in five-gold-star (with interannual rates of 1.2%), in fourgold-star (with interannual rates of 2.0%) and in three-silver-star and two-silver-star (both with 3.5%) establishments. Conversely, one-silver-star hotels, two-gold-star and three-gold-star, showed interannual increases of 2.8%, 1.4% and 0.6%, respectively. Prices remained the same in one-gold-star establishments. Indicators on the Profitability of the Hotel Sector The average invoicing by hotels per occupied room (ADR) in July was 74.1 euros, indicating an increase of 0.9 euros as compared with the same month in In turn, income per available room (RevPAR), conditioned by the occupancy registered in the hotel establishments, reached 47.2 euros, with an increase of 2.5 euros as compared with July By category, the average invoicing was euros for five-star hotels, 84.9 euros for fourstar hotels and 63.6 euros for three-star hotels. Income per available room for these same categories was 92.8, 60.9 and 45.4 euros, respectively. 5 Methodological note 2010 Indicators on the Profitability of the Hotel Sector Base change 2008 In the year 2010, the INE began to publish two new variables pertaining to the Indicators on the Profitability of the Hotel Sector: the ADR (Average Daily Rate or Average Invoicing per Occupied Room) and the RevPAR (Revenue Per Available Room or Income per Available Room), both compiled with information that hotel establishments provide in the questionnaire of the Hotel Occupancy Survey (HOS). The changes occurring in the sector in recent years encouraged the introduction of certain modifications in said section of the questionnaire, from January 2008 onwards. With these changes, we hope, on the one hand, to include the new distribution channels favoured by generalised Internet use, and on the other hand, to adapt the questionnaire to the terms and concepts that are most frequently used within the sector, as well as to the data available in the business management systems themselves. The calculation and dissemination of the two new indicators broadens the information demanded by the hotel sector, thus increasing the great utility of the HOS. They do not respond, therefore, to a regulatory demand on behalf of the European Union, but rather, to the needs for information expressed by the sector itself. These two variables, together with the occupancy rate by room, constitute an important source of information for hotel establishments, which allows them to evaluate their price policy or revenue management. On the other hand, so as to avoid saturating users with indicators that hinder the interpretation of the results, the Hotel Income Index (HII) has ceased to be published, with the last data available corresponding to December Available on the INE website, are the ADR and RevPAR series, since January 2008, with data on a national level, by category and by Autonomous Community.
