During the month of April, 21.8 million overnight stays were registered in hotel establishments, which implies an increase of 2.9% with respect to the month of April The increase in overnight stays was observed for both residents (whose interannual rate was 3.7%), and non-residents (2%). Given that the interannual increase in the number of travellers (1.8%) was lower than the increase in overnight stays, the average stay increased 1.1% with respect to April 2006, standing at 2.9 nights per traveller. Over the first four months of the year, 65.4 million overnight stays were registered, that is, 4.1% more than the same period in 2006, with increases of 3.3% for residents and 4.8% for non-residents. The average stay stood at 2.9 nights per traveller, for a total of 0.2% less than the same period in On the other hand, the Hotel Price Index (HPI) registered an increase of 2.4% in the month of April, 1.2 points lower than the rate registered in April The Hotel Income Index (HII), which compared to the HPI also considers the variation in the tariff structure, reflected a 2.7% interannual growth in income per occupied room. During the month of April, 55.8% of the available bed spaces were filled, which implies a decrease of 0.8% with respect to April The weekend occupancy rate by bed spaces was 63.7%, with an interannual decrease of 1.1%. 2 The occupancy rates expected for June and July increased. The occupancy rates by room expected for the months of June and July registered interannual rates of 2.2% and 2.8%, respectively, with respect to the rates expected in April of last year for the same months. Overnight stays of German and British citizens increased. Travellers from Germany and the United Kingdom registered almost six million overnight stays in April, accounting for 53.8% of the total for non-residents. The German market experienced an interannual increase of 0.6% in its overnight stays, and the British market, 0.5%. The overnight stays of French, Italian and Belgian travellers (the following markets) presented interannual rates of 0.4%, 15% and -5.2%. Within this community, overnight stays of foreigners, which represented 28.1% of the national total, decreased 0.5% with respect to April It was followed by Illes Balears, with an interannual rate of 6.3%, and by Cataluña, with a rate of 0.9%. Andalucía, Comunitat Valenciana and Cataluña were the main destinations for Spaniards, with interannual rates for overnight stays of 1.7%, 11.3% and 2.7%, respectively. 3 Canarias reached the highest occupancy rate in the month of April. Canarias was the Autonomous Community with the highest occupancy rate by bed spaces for the month of April (67.2%). It was followed by Illes Balears (64.9%) and Comunitat Valenciana (60.5%). The tourist areas with the highest occupancy and overnight stay rates were located on the islands and the coasts. The Costa del Maresme, in Barcelona, accounted for the highest occupancy rate by bed spaces (71.7%), while the highest weekend occupancy rate by bed spaces (78.7%) was reached both on the Barcelona coast and on the Island of La Gomera. The area that registered the highest number of overnight stays in April was the island of Mallorca, with 2.5 million occupied bed spaces. The tourist areas with the highest number of overnight stays were Madrid, Barcelona and Benidorm. In addition, this last area reached the highest occupancy rate by bed spaces (80.7%) and the highest weekend occupancy rate (85.3%). Hotel prices increased in April. The interannual increase of the HPI stood at 2.4% in April, which was 0.7 points above the rate from the prior month and 1.2 points below the rate registered one year ago. The four communities (Andalucía, Cataluña, Canarias and Comunidad de Madrid), which carried 65.6% of the total weight of the Hotel Price Index in the month of April, registered positive interannual rates. Andalucía, which carried the largest load in the weight structure this month (20%), registered an interannual rate of 1.5%, 0.5% higher than the rate registered in March. Cataluña yielded a rate of 3.2%, 2.9 points higher than the rate registered in March Canarias, however, experienced a rate of 0.1%, 0.4 points lower than the previous month, maintaining the downwards trend that began in December The Comunidad de Madrid reached a rate of 3.1%, one point lower than the rate registered in March. 3

4 Hotel prices increased in all categories. The prices of five-gold-star hotels were those that grew the least in the month of April, that is, 0.3% with respect to the month of April last year. Four- and three-gold-star hotels both registered interannual rates of 2.4%. Hotels with one silver star increased the most (an interannual rate of 5.7%), followed by hotels with one gold star (5.4%). The HII experienced an increase of 2.7% in the interannual rate in April. The HII showed an interannual increase of 2.7% in April, 0.1 points higher than the rate registered in March and 1.9 points lower than the rate registered last year. The five communities (Andalucía, Canarias, Cataluña, Illes Balears and Comunitat Valenciana), which represent 73.2% of the total weight of the income index per occupied room in the month of April, registered positive interannual rates (1.3%, 0.2%, 4.7%, 3% and 4.8%, respectively). Income per occupied room increased in all categories.
