This rate was 12.8 points above than that registered in the year Overnight stays of residents increased 2.9%, indicating a 6.2-point increase as compared with 2009, whereas overnights stays of non-residents increased 8.1%, that is, 17.7 points above than the rate registered the previous year. In turn, the Hotel Price Index (HPI) registered a 1.9% average decrease during the year Regarding the indicators on the profitability of the hotel sector, invoicing per occupied room reached an average value of 69.5 euros in 2010, and income per available room stood at 38.0 euros. To bridge this gap in the series, some linking coefficients have been calculated to allow users to compare data from different years. The coefficients are published monthly on the INE website in the section dedicated to each statistical operation, in a specific section entitled linking coefficients. 2 The average interannual variation rates of the year for the HPI and HII are calculated as the average of the interannual variation rates for the HPI and HII, respectively, weighted by the number of occupied rooms each month. 1

Main destinations By Autonomous Community, Canarias, Illes Balears, Cataluña and Andalucía accounted for 69.1% of the total overnight stays in Andalucía, Cataluña, Comunitat Valenciana, Canarias and Comunidad de Madrid accounted for 65.5% of resident overnight stays in 2010, recording interannual rates of 2.1%, 7.6%, 1.6%, 0.1% and 7.8%, respectively. Illes Balears, Canarias, Cataluña and Andalucía were the destinations preferred by nonresidents, showing interannual rates for the aforementioned overnight stays of 7.9%, 7.5%, 13.9% and 1.5%, respectively. The tourist area that registered the highest number of overnight stays in 2010 was the island of Mallorca, with 37.6 million occupied bedplaces. 2

3 The tourist site with the highest number of overnight stays were Madrid, Barcelona and Benidorm. The tourist site with the highest occupancy rate was Salou, where, on average, 74.9% of the bedplaces available during the year were occupied. Evolution of the Hotel Price Index The average growth in hotel prices during 2010 was 1.9%. All of the Autonomous Communities registered decreases in their prices in some months. By category, the average invoicing was euros for five-star hotels, 77.9 euros for fourstar hotels and 57.3 euros for three-star hotels. Income per available room for these same categories was 79.8, 48.8 and 34.6 euros, respectively. 4 Overnight stays increase 3.6%, and prices decrease 0.5%, in the month of December During the past month of December, 12.7 million overnight stays were recorded, which was an increase of 3.6% as compared with the same month of the previous year. Overnight stays of residents increased 3.9%, and those of non-residents increased 3.3%. The average stay decreased 1.0% as compared with December In December, 37.5% of the available bedplaces were occupied, 2.9% more than in the same month the previous year. The weekend occupancy rate by bedplaces stood at 39.8%, with an interannual increase of 1.5%. Guests from Germany and the United Kingdom amounted to 3.0 million overnight stays in December, accounting for 48.0% of the total for non-residents. Both markets experienced interannual decreases in overnight stays (from -0.3% to 0.1%, respectively). The following markets of origin were France, Italy and the Sweden, which presented interannual rates of 7.8%, 5.3% and 15.1%, respectively. The main destination chosen by non-resident guests was Canarias, with 54.0% of the total overnight stays of non-residents, and a 4.2% decrease as compared with December In turn, Andalucía, Comunidad de Madrid and Cataluña were the main destinations of choice of resident guests, registering interannual rates in December of 5.7%, 5.1% and 11.5%, respectively. The Autonomous Community with the highest occupancy rate by bedplaces was Canarias during December (59.1%). It was followed by Madrid (47.5%) and Cataluña (36.2%). The tourist areas with the highest occupancy and overnight stay rates were located on the islands and the coasts as well as in some areas of the Pyrenees. Gran Canaria recorded both the highest occupancy rate by bedplaces (67.2%) and the highest weekend occupancy rate by bedplaces (67.6%). Tenerife registered 1.6 million overnight stays in December. The tourist sites with the highest number of overnight stays were Madrid, Barcelona and San Bartolomé de Tirajana. Mogán reached the highest occupancy rate by bedplaces (73.4%), and the highest weekend occupancy (69.6%). The Hotel Price Index (HPI) registered a 0.56% decrease in December, this rate being 0.1 points higher than that registered in the previous month and 4.9 points above that registered one year ago. Regarding the indicators on the profitability of the hotel sector, invoicing per occupied room reached an average value of 69.2 euros (1.1 euros more than in December 2009), and income per available room stood at 28.4 euros (1.2 euros more than one year ago). 4

5 Methodological note 2010 Hotel Price Index - Hotel Income Index Base change year 2009 As of the year 2000, the INE publishes the Hotel Price Index (HPI) and the Hotel Income Index (HII), compiled with the information that hotel businesspersons include in a specific section of the Hotel Occupancy Survey questionnaire. However, the changes that have occurred in the sector in recent years encouraged the introduction of certain modifications in said section of the questionnaire, as of January With these changes, we hope, on the one hand, to collect the new distribution channels favoured by generalised Internet use, and on the other hand, to adapt the questionnaire to the terms and concepts that are most frequently used within the sector, as well as the data available in the business management systems themselves. In order to introduce all of the new information collected in the new questionnaire model in the computation of these indicators in a precise way, it is necessary to carry out a base change. For this reason, as of January 2010, the Hotel Price Index and the Hotel Income Index shall be published in base A base change in an indicator implies a break in the historical series, preventing, in this case, the comparison, as of January 2010, with the indices from previous periods. So as to avoid this break, and maintain temporal comparability, the series published until December 2009 have been linked.
