1 31 August 2009 Non-Hotel Tourist Accommodation Occupancy Surveys July Overnight stays in non-hotel tourist accommodation decrease 8.8% * in July, as compared with the same month in 2008 Overnight stays in non-hotel tourist accommodation (holiday dwellings, campsites and rural tourism establishments) exceeded 16.0 million in July, 8.8% less than in the same month the previous year. This decrease in overnight stays was recorded for both residents (whose interannual rate stood at 0.6%), and non-residents ( 14.5%). The average stay decreased 7.8% as compared with July 2008, and stood at 5.9 nights per traveller. During the first seven months of the year, overnight stays decreased 10.6% with respect to the same period the previous year. The decrease in overnight stays was recorded for both residents, whose interannual rate stood at -4.7%, and non-residents, who presented a variation of 16.7%. In order to avoid this break in the series, linking coefficients have been calculated, allowing for comparing the data from different years. The coefficients are published every month on the INE website, in the area dedicated to this statistical operation, in a specific section denominated linking coefficients. 1

2 Available holiday dwellings decreased 0.6%, reaching 549,767 bedplaces. This month, 47.5% of the total available bedplaces were occupied, 11.9% less than in July The weekend occupancy rate by bedplaces was 48.6%, with an interannual decrease of 13.1%. In turn, of the total available holiday dwellings, 57.6% were occupied, for an interannual decrease of 10.9%. Non-resident overnight stays in holiday dwellings represented 67.1% of the total. The United Kingdom was the main country of origin, with 1.8 million overnight stays, 27.1% less than in July of last year. The following market was Germany, with one million overnight stays and an interannual rate of 13.6%. Canarias was the preferred holiday dwelling destination, with more than 2.5 million overnight stays, 21.2% less than in July The second destination was Illes Balears, with over 1.9 million overnight stays, 13.4% less. Among non-residents, Canarias, Illes Balears and Cataluña were the main destinations of choice. In turn, the destinations with the most overnight stays by resident travellers were Comunitat Valenciana, Canarias and Andalucía. Illes Balears presented the highest occupancy rate, with 66.0% of available holiday dwellings occupied. It was followed by Cataluña (48.7%) and Andalucía (48.4%). By tourist area, the island of Mallorca was the preferred destination in this accommodation modality, with 1,179,155 overnight stays and an occupancy rate of 73.5% of the available holiday dwellings. San Bartolomé de Tirajana, Arona and Tías were the tourist sites registering the highest number of overnight stays. Prices for holiday dwellings decrease 2.4% in July The Holiday Dwelling Price Index registered a 2.4% decrease in July, a rate 0.1 points higher than that recorded the previous month. The rate for tour-operators and travel agencies, which carried the greatest weight in the weighting structure for this month (54.1%), decreased 2.2% in the interannual rate. Overnight stays by resident travellers grew 2.6% in the interannual rate, whilst non-resident overnight stays dropped 10.9%. Tourist campsites offered 745,649 bedplaces, 0.4% less than in the same month of Of the available lots, 44.3% were occupied, for a 5.7% decrease in the interannual rate. The weekend occupancy rate per lot reached 48.9%, that is, 7.4% less than in July % of overnight stays on tourist campsites were by non-residents. The Netherlands was the main country of origin, with 35.3% of overnight stays by non-residents (10.4% less than in July 2008). The following country of origin was France. Cataluña was the preferred destination for camping, with more than 3.5 million overnight stays, 8.5% less in the interannual rate. Andalucía was the second destination of choice, with 679,921 overnight stays, and a increase of 5.3%. Among resident travellers, the preferred destinations were Cataluña, Andalucía and Comunitat Valenciana. The destinations with the most overnight stays by non-resident travellers were Cataluña, Comunitat Valenciana, and Andalucía. La Rioja reached the highest occupancy rate in tourist campsites in July, with 68.4% of the available lots occupied. It was followed by País Vasco (55.3%) and Comunitat Valenciana (53.6%). By tourist area, Costa Brava was the preferred destination for camping, with 2,024,108 overnight stays. Costa del Maresme reached the highest occupancy, with 69.2% of the available lots occupied. The tourist sites with the most overnight stays were Torroella de Montgrí, Castelló d Empúries and Salou. The normal rate, which had the greatest weight in the weighting structure for this month (84.3%), presented an increase of 3.5%. Regarding category, luxury and first class, with a weighting of 49.4% this month, registered an interannual increase of 4.0%. 3

Overnight stays by resident travellers increased 0.1%, whilst non-resident overnight stays dropped 7.1%. Rural tourism accommodation offered 131,949 bedplaces, 9.5% more than in July % of these bedplaces were occupied, representing a 10.0% decrease. Among non-residents, Illes Balears was the preferred destination. In turn, the destinations with the most overnight stays by residents were Castilla y León, Principado de Asturias and Cataluña. Illes Balears reached the highest occupancy rate in rural tourism accommodation, with 55.7% of the available bedplaces. It was followed by País Vasco (36.8%) and Cantabria (36.1%). By tourist area, Costa Verde was the main destination, with 62,521 overnight stays in July. The coast of Guipúzcoa reached the highest occupancy (58.5%). The normal rate, which carried the greatest weight in the weighting structure this month (59.2%), rose 2.0%. By rental modality, complete use, with a weighting of 59.4%, recorded an interannual increase of 1.4%. 4

5 Annex Evolution of travellers and overnight stays in all Spanish collective tourist accommodation Overnight stays in all Spanish collective tourist accommodation (hotels, holiday dwellings, campsites and rural tourism accommodation) registered an 6.6%* interannual decrease in July. The decrease in overnight stays was recorded for both residents (whose interannual rate stood at 0.2%), and non-residents ( 10.8%). Cataluña was the preferred destination regarding overall tourist accommodation, with more than 11.0 million overnight stays (5.7% less than in July 2008). Next were Illes Balears, with 10.6 million overnight stays (8.0% less) and Canarias, with 6.9 million overnight stays (15.7% less). The preferred destinations of non-residents were Illes Balears, Cataluña and Canarias. Andalucía, Cataluña and Comunitat Valenciana were the destinations with the most overnight stays by residents.
