Violence, exploitation, discrimination, marginalization, restrictive approaches to fundamental freedoms, whether of individuals or of groups: these are some of the chief elements of poverty which need to be overcome. When we give to the poor, God indeed pours his love, peace and joy into our hearts and into our lives. DIVINE WISDOM The Lord s message, through Moses, was to take no revenge and cherish no grudge... love your neighbor as yourself (Leviticus 19:18). We might think, Great in theory, but not always realistic! Then Jesus in today s Gospel goes even further. Take a slap in the face and then turn the other cheek? Treat enemies the same as friends? Again, we re tempted to think that those are nice ideals, but not very practical in the real world. Paul echoes Jesus when he tells the Corinthians that what passes for human wisdom is absurdity to God. Divine wisdom casts sunshine on the good and the bad, showers rain on the honest and the dishonest without distinction. Nevertheless, pastors and parents are to see to it that minors who are not bound by the law of fast and abstinence are educated in an authentic sense of penance. (Canon 1253) Abstinence means abstaining from meat. Fasting means one full meal a day, with two lighter meals in the course of a day to maintain strength. The Fridays of Lent in the United States are days of abstinence from meat. Ash Wednesday and Good Friday are days of fast and abstinence from meat.
