TREASURES FROM OUR TRADITION It s Independence Day week, and there is a link worth tracing between the Declaration of Independence and the language of liturgy. One of the signers of the Declaration on that July 4 long ago was Charles Carroll, probably the wealthiest man in the colonies and one of the few Catholics on the political scene. As a flourish to his signature, he sought to distinguish himself from other prominent citizens bearing the same name by penning Charles Carroll of Carrolltown a defiant come and get me if you dare postscript aimed at the British. Carroll s brother John was a priest and patriot who in 1789 was given the task of organizing the Catholic Church in this country. By 1791 he had assembled a synod, or assembly of delegates, to launch that task formally. Archbishop Carroll wanted to gain acceptance of our faith by American people who mistrusted our customs and could not comprehend our liturgy. He made the amazing proposal to Rome that our liturgy should be prayed not in Latin, but in the vernacular, English. His wish was denied, but one hundred sixty years later, his deep desire helped the American bishops and scholars at the Second Vatican Council to win the vote in favor of the vernacular not just for the United States, but for the Church throughout the world. 4 MURIENDO Y RESUCITANDO Las palabras de san Pablo son como una cachetada: No saben ustedes que todos los que fuimos bautizados en Cristo Jesús, nos hemos sumergido en su muerte? (Romanos 6:3). Esta carta de san Pablo es una de varias lecturas que se pueden escoger para que sea leída en los funerales, es una lectura que por lo general deja impresionados a quienes en esa circunstancia la escuchan. Aún en esta circunstancia, esta lectura nos da consuelo como cristianos, hemos muerto con Cristo, creemos que también viviremos con él,... después de resucitar, no muere más,... vive para Dios... Así también ustedes, considérense muertos al pecado y vivos para Dios en Cristo Jesús. HOSPITALIDAD Una de las formas que vivimos en Dios es compartir la hospitalidad de Dios a todos. Hay un dicho irlandés que dice Cristo a menudo va disfrazado de desconocido. La mujer de Sunem ofreció su hospitalidad al profeta Eliseo invitándolo a comer y ofreciéndole un lugar donde descansar. Él agradeció y recompensó la hospitalidad con la promesa que tendría un hijo. Cristo nos explica lo que es la hospitalidad: quien me recibe a mí, recibe al que me ha enviado y no quedará sin recompensa. Al advertirnos que el que ama a su padre o a su madre más que a mí, no es digno de mí... y también el que salve su vida la perderá y el que la pierda por mí, la salvará Jesús propone que aprendamos a desapegarnos de las cosas que ahora consideramos indispensables en nuestras vidas. Cristo nos ama y quiere que lo pongamos primero ante otros compromisos o deseos. Nuestra hospitalidad con personas desconocidas pone a Cristo ante nosotros solo de esta manera. This process is ongoing every Friday and Saturday beginning August 12th until Festival Day. Raffle Sales Everyone can do this. Pick up a stack of tickets and sell to your friends and family. Moving & Set-up The day before the Festival yes, we move it all from the church and set it up at the park. Anyone with a means of transportation and a strong back is welcome and needed. Shrimp Bagging We do this Thursday of Festival week. The title says it all. Hushpuppy & Fish Frying Festival day at the park for the carry out orders in the serving line. Serving Line Festival day at the park filling orders for our patrons who wish to dine in or carry out. Drive Thru Friday and Saturday of festival weekend we hustle to serve those who drive thru to purchase shrimp and gumbo. Clean-Up Well of course we have to clean up our mess. The reverse of moving & set-up at the end of festival day. Dining Area Our customers can enjoy their meal lakeside under the pavilion. We have to keep our dining room neat, tidy and stocked.
