(7/22/13, Garden) TREASURES FROM OUR TRADITION The Eucharistic Prayers at the heart of our liturgy have a long history, beginning with the extemporaneous prayers of the early Christians. The presiders gave thanks from their hearts, not from any prearranged text, over the gifts of bread and wine. When the assembly had the sense that enough was said, someone would call out Amen! and that was that. For the most part, the plan flowed directly from Jewish meal prayers, which always recalled God s mighty deeds. Some other markers and signposts were added almost everywhere fairly early, like the presider s call to attention: Lift up your hearts! Scholars have provided us with translations of many early texts. These have actually helped us craft new liturgical prayers, because until the liturgical reforms of forty years ago, no one could recall any prayer but the Roman Canon, now called Eucharistic Prayer I. For hundreds of years in the West, it was our only Eucharistic Prayer, and it was only in Latin. But the history of our Eucharistic Prayers is amazingly fruitful, and models have come down to us that have yielded new insights and expressions. The old custom of improvising texts according to a master plan has not endured, but we have now rediscovered a plan of standardizing the text while allowing for a great variety. Rev. SAINT JUNÍPERO SERRA ( ) July 1 No one who has stood before the quiet majesty of Mission San Juan Capistrano, or the altogether different but no less lovely Mission Dolores in San Francisco, or any of the missions from San Diego to Sonoma can fail to bless the Franciscan padre who, while not founder of each, was inspiration for them all, Saint Junípero Serra. Abandoning the comfortable academic life to which his doctorate in theology entitled him, Serra journeyed to the New World where his tireless traveling, dramatic preaching, and penitential austerity converted thousands of native peoples. Saving souls and celebrat- ing the sacraments were Padre Serra s primary mission but not his only one. Education in letters and crafts, trades and agriculture transformed the people, while roads and irrigation systems transfigured the landscape. His more than thirty years of ministry were not free from conflict with authorities or without controversy in the retrospectively critical eye of history. But when John Paul II beatified him in 1988, he praised Padre Serra for assisting his converts to use their new faith to advance their true human development. 4 CON TU CONSTANTE AYUDA, OH DIOS He escuchado las calumnias de la gente: Terror por todas partes! (Jeremías 20:10). De qué tenemos miedo? Tenemos miedo de las personas que hablan mal de nosotros? De aquellos que curiosean en nuestras vidas? Tenemos miedo de caer en la pobreza? De la guerra en nuestro país? Se dice que aquí en Estados Unidos podemos ser pobres después de una hospitalización y nos llegue la cuenta del hospital; no deberíamos ser tan confiados de nuestros bienes materiales. Nunca sabemos lo que nos puede pasar. Debemos ser misericordiosos con aquellas personas que han caído en la desgracia, y estar listo para ayudar a nuestras hermanas y hermanos, así como Dios tiene misericordia y nos ayuda cuando tropezamos y caemos. NO TENGAS MIEDO A ALGUIEN La pobreza existe, así como la muerte existe. Pero no debemos rendirnos o perder esperanza! Pues Dios conoce todas nuestras necesidades y está listo para ayudarnos. Porque el Señor escucha a los necesitados, y no rechaza a los cautivos (Salmo 69:34). Quizás seamos o no seamos pobres materialmente, pero somos víctimas de nuestra propia tendencia hacia el pecado. Así como Adán todos murieron, en Cristo todos permanecen vivos. Pero no hay comparación entre el delito y el don. Porque si por el delito de uno solo todos murieron, mucho más la gracia de Dios, hecha don gratuito en otro hombre, Jesucristo se ha derramado abundantemente sobre todos (Romanos 5:15). Buscamos a Dios por su misericordia y su consuelo en nuestras necesidades. Dios escucha nuestra oración; y en los escondites secretos de nuestro corazón herido Dios nos consuela y nos ofrece la salvación. Así pues, no les tengan miedo; porque no hay nada oculto que no vaya a manifestarse, nada secreto que no vaya a saberse. Lo que yo les digo en la oscuridad, díganlo a plena luz; lo que escuchen al oído, proclámenlo desde las azoteas (Mateo 10:26-27). Podemos ser pobres materialmente, o tener miedo a ese tipo de pobreza. Todos somos pobres en nuestras faltas, pequeñas o grandes, pero no debemos tener miedo, porque Dios está con nosotros por medio de su misericordia y amor. No tengan miedo a los que matan el cuerpo, pero no pueden quitar la vida (Mateo 10:28). En Dios se puede confiar. En sus obras Contra los herejes, se preocupó no tanto por atacar a quienes tenían un concepto erróneo de la Iglesia y los misterios de la fe, sino de preservar la autenticidad de la fe cristiana predicada por los apóstoles. Una de las herejías que atacó fue la de los gnósticos, un grupo de cristianos que afirmaban que la salvación sólo venía por un conocimiento especial de Dios, disponible sólo para unos cuantos. Ireneo, además de maestro fue un gran pacificador, pues concilió las tensiones entre oriente y occidente en lo referente a la celebración de la Pascua, en la primera luna llena de la primavera. Serving Line Festival day at the park filling orders for our patrons who wish to dine in or carry out. Drive Thru Friday and Saturday of festival weekend we hustle to serve those who drive thru to purchase shrimp and gumbo. Clean-Up Well of course we have to clean up our mess. The reverse of moving & set-up at the end of festival day. Dining Area Our customers can enjoy their meal lakeside under the pavilion. We have to keep our dining room neat, tidy and stocked.
