(Ramson, Praying with Frederic, p.113) Church picnic, June 4th Saida & George Rashmawi, volunteer members from the Roman Catholic Church in Bethlehem in the Holy Land are visiting our parish the weekend of June They will speak to us about the Christian struggle in the Holy Land and they also have some beautiful Olive Wood carvings which are all handmade by the Christian people over there. This is a church mission to maintain the existence of the Catholic people in the Holy Land. Catholic Christians were once the majority in that land but the percentage has now dropped to less than 1.5%. Please take time to look at the carvings, make a purchase and help this worthy cause. These carvings make great sacramental gifts that have an added special significance. This, June 4th, the 11:00 am Mass will be celebrated at Civitan park with picnic to immediately follow. Chicken, hot dogs, and drinks will be provided. Everyone is asked to bring a dessert or side dish to share. Welcomes Charles Deering Charles Deering, a first year seminarian at Notre Dame, will be joining during summer break from his studies. Bio: Charles Deering recently completed his first year of PreTheology at Notre Dame Seminary in New Orleans, Louisiana. He was raised in Calera, Alabama, where his parents still reside. Charles is the middle child and only son in his family, having one older and one younger sister. After high school, Charles worked full-time while attending classes at UAB. During this time, Charles heard more clearly the Lord calling him to discern the Priesthood for the Diocese of Birmingham. He received a BA in History from UAB and entered seminary soon after. 4 ACCIÓN EN EL ESPÍRITU Cuando nuestro mundo se pone de cabeza, cuando enfrentamos incertidumbre acerca de lo que es real, cuando estamos inseguros de nuestro porvenir, cuando no sabemos lo siguiente que debemos hacer, no queremos estar solos. Tampoco los discípulos y todos aquellos que amaron a Jesús. Ellos quisieron estar unidos cuando necesitaron darse cuenta de lo que les estaba pasando y de lo que se les iba a pedir. Hay seguridad en los números, pero ni los apóstoles ni nosotros podemos permanecer juntos. El Espíritu requiere que vayamos a la acción. Todas las manifestaciones del Espíritu se dan para que nos beneficien a nosotros y al mundo. Pasaron por la crisis del Jueves Santo y tocaron fondo el Viernes Santo, la incertidumbre del Domingo de Pascua, y las varias apariciones de Jesús después de su muerte y resurrección. Ellos no habían reconocido a Jesús y cuando lo hicieron le preguntaron si de verdad era él. Durante todo este tiempo ellos permanecieron juntos. El libro de los Hechos los pone a todos en un lugar, juntos, cuando el viento sopla y llena la casa de lenguas de fuego que se posan sobre ellos. Así ya ellos pueden comunicarse y los entienden por quienes no los habían entendido. Cada uno reconoce que esto es un milagro de Dios. Juan nos recuerda y los discípulos que recibieron el Espíritu trae paz y la necesidad de la acción. Ellos recibieron el Espíritu para que puedan ser enviados al mundo a perdonar los pecados. Este santo apóstol de Brasil fue beatificado en 1980 gracias a sus grandes esfuerzos humanitarios, literarios y evangelizadores en Brasil. Llegó a Brasil en 1553 donde aprendió Tupí, el idioma de los nativos. Enseñaba a los indígenas, evangelizándolos con la doctrina cristiana y educándolos en historia, filosofía y medicina. Eventualmente fundó el colegio jesuita de São Paulo de Piratininga donde tuvo la audacia de educar, junto a los hijos de los nativos, los hijos de los portugueses. Para este esfuerzo escribió muchos libros y manuales, cosa que le mereció ser el primer escritor en Brasil. Además de ser un escritor prolífico, este misionero dedicó su vida a predicar el Evangelio en Brasil, país que cruzó a pie, fundando pueblos y escuelas para los indígenas cristianos. Estos le llamaban el santo volador por la velocidad con que caminaba. Su celo por el Evangelio lo motivaba a seguir caminando.
