3 Week of March 18, 2012 Mensaje del Párroco Message from the Pastor Dear friends, The conversation was around success has the leadership of the parish been successful in its mission to address the pastoral priorities created in our pastoral assemblies? The most recent priorities include responding to 1) needs of youth; 2) issues of domestic violence, including violence in the streets; 3) injustices against the immigrants; 4) reaching out to animate other agencies and churches; and 5) creating new leadership in the community. The person who asked if in fact we had seen any success in the last twenty years of parish life is engaged in the current series of weekly leadership sessions our parish sponsors. These sessions are attended by those nominated at our November Pastoral Assembly and who are considered to have leadership potential in our parish. They are nominated with a criteria developed by previous parish leaders, and the hope is that by attending leadership sessions we will better respond together to the joys and hopes, the griefs and the anxieties of the followers of Christ (Guadium et spes 1, Vatican II). As the group of 15 or so spoke about success, we wondered how we might define success. Certainly, we would say the parish mission is successful if there was not a single gunshot in the night, every child and youth were doing well in school, and every family lived with peace in their home! But would we say we were successful in all these years if only one youth graduated from college, one immigrant found justice, one family turned away from violence, one agency saw it s mission beyond its own nose? Then if not one, how many stories would you require to speak of success? (In fact, there are many, many stories if we pay close attention and listen to true leaders.) Finally, though, I had to ask if the crucifixion of Christ was successful. The violence of the moment, the abandonment by his friends, the tragedy of it all one could easily think that Jesus was not very successful. Perhaps success is not always measured by numbers or what we think we might have accomplished. Success might be better measured by the fire we feel in our hearts to make a difference in the lives of others. And where two or three are gathered, we begin the story of Christ again and again. Every day, there is a youth living in fear of getting killed, a child needing to get into school, an immigrant trying to survive the success of the mission depends on us to provide them with a helpful way to live. It might also be helpful to remember an adapted quote I use when thinking about success, Sometimes the object of the Lenten journey is not the end, but the journey itself. Sincerely, Fr. Bruce Wellems, CMF Page Three Queridos amigos y queridas amigas: Estábamos hablando de tener éxito, de si los líderes de la parroquia habían tenido éxito en su intento de responder a las prioridades pastorales que habían ido apareciendo en las asambleas pastorales. Las últimas prioridades pastorales han tratado de responder a 1) las necesidades de los jóvenes; 2) la violencia doméstica, incluyendo la violencia en la calle; 3) las injusticias contra los inmigrantes; 4) entrar en contacto con otras agencias e iglesias para colaborar; y 5) crear un nuevo estilo de liderazgo en la comunidad. El que preguntó si habíamos conseguido algún resultado en los últimos veinte años de vida parroquial está participando en los cursos de liderazgo que está organizando ahora mismo la parroquia. En esas sesiones participan los que fueron elegidos para ellos en la asamblea pastoral de noviembre y otros a los que se les ve potencial como líderes futuros en la parroquia. Son elegidos con el criterio de los que ya están participando como líderes en la parroquia. Y la esperanza está en que participando en esos cursos todos llegaremos a responder mejor a los gozos y las esperanzas, las tristezas y las angustias de los hombres de nuestro tiempo. (Gaudium et spes 1, Vaticano II) Mientras que el grupo, unas quince personas, hablaba del tema, pensábamos cómo podíamos definir la idea de éxito. Ciertamente diríamos que la parroquia ha tenido éxito si durante las noches no se oyese ningún disparo, si niños y jóvenes aprovechasen su tiempo en la escuela y si cada familia viviese en paz en su hogar. Pero diríamos lo mismo si durante estos años sólo un joven hubiese terminado el college, sólo se hubiese hecho justicia a un inmigrante, sólo una familia se hubiese liberado de la violencia y sólo una agencia se hubiese comprometido en la misión tan urgente que tenemos aquí? Si un hecho de estos no es bastante, cuántos serían necesarios para hablar de éxito? (De hecho han pasado muchas cosas de esas, muchas, basta con que escuchemos con atención a los verdaderos líderes.) En esta línea, creo que tendríamos que preguntarnos si la crucifixión de Cristo fue o no un éxito. La violencia que sufrió, el ser abandonado por sus amigos, la tragedia de la pasión fácilmente se podría concluir que Jesús fue un fracasado. Quizá es que el éxito no se puede medir siempre en cifras o números. Ni siquiera en lo que habitualmente pensamos que es. El éxito se puede ver mejor en el fuego que sentimos en el corazón cuando nos ponemos al servicio de los demás y les ayudamos a vivir mejor. Y allí donde dos o tres se reúnen para contar de nuevo la historia de Jesús. Todos los días hay jóvenes asustados ante la amenaza de la muerte violenta, niños que necesitan ser escolarizados, inmigrantes tratando de sobrevivir. El éxito de la misión depende de cómo seamos capaces de ayudarlos a todos a vivir una vida más digna. Quizá nos pueda ayudar a reflexionar en esto una cita que me gusta recordar al hablar de lo que es el éxito: A veces lo más importante de la Cuaresma no es el final sino la cuaresma misma. 4 Week of March 18, 2012 YOUTH PAGE Page Four Most of you are familiar with Casa Romero on 46th and Honore, where we have our After-School Program and Kid s Café. But do you know who Casa Romero is named after? In the 1970 s there was an Archbishop, Oscar Romero, in El Salvador, who stood at the side of the poor suffering under government oppression. Those who protested were often tortured and shot during those years, over 75,000 Salvadorans were killed. On March 24, 1980, Archbishop Romero was leading a misa. He spoke to the people, urging them not to lose hope. Minutes later, he himself was shot and killed right during the misa. But he once said, I do not believe in death without resurrection. If they kill me, I will be resurrected in the Salvadoran people. In our community, we know that undocumented persons, and students in particular, suffer from a lack of rights. Call the Sinclair Campus at (773) It s now the fourth Sunday of Lent, and we KNOW you ve blown it along the way on your Lenten resolutions, so rather than feeling bad about yourself, think about something positive to do for others: For OPERATION RICE BOWL this week: Take the money you might spend this week on candy or hot chips and pop, and put it into a Rice Bowl box (available in the churches.) At Easter, bring the box back to church. 75% of the money raised goes overseas to hunger programs, and 25% stays right here in the parish Kid s Café and Food Pantry!

In today s scriptures, we hear how the Israelites repeatedly break their covenant with God, and yet God continues to respond with merciful and abiding love. Our response to God s grace must be apparent in our works. This week through OPERATION RICE BOWL we learn about our brothers and sisters in Zambia, who are unable to enter the marketplace and earn a living. We pray for all who struggle to find work, and we fast for those who OPERATION RICE BOWL cannot afford to feed their families. We give so that Catholic Relief Services can help marginalized people obtain loans in order to save money, start small businesses, and work toward a brighter future.
