From the Start Menu, select Settings and Control Panel. 2. From the control panel double click on the Keyboard icon ( Regional and Language Options in Windows XP). 3. Select the Language or Input locales tab. 4. Click on the Properties button (or Details button for Windows XP). 5. From the drop down list of the Keyboard layout, select United-States-International. a. In Windows XP you need to go to the Installed Devices option and click on Add. A new window will appear. b. From the Keyboard layout/ime dropdown menu select United-States- International and click OK. c. If you want to make the new keyboard layout your default setting then click on the Default Input Language dropdown menu and select English (United States) United-States-International and click on Apply and then OK. 6. Click OK, you may be asked to insert you Windows CD so that the computer can read the appropriate.dll and configuration files. 7. Click OK on Keyboard Properties to close (or Regional and Language options ). Note that you can install several keyboards and then check the Enable indicator on task bar box or create a key sequence that will switch keyboards and this will allow you to change through the several versions pain free! The keyboard now has what is known as dead keys.

2 Span 361 Quintana 2 What this means is that the single and double quotes ' ", the caret ^, the right pointing quote `, and the tilde ~, will not print on the screen if pressed only once. To make them appear you need to press them twice or press the space bar afterwards. Conversely, if you need and accented vowel like the ones needed in Spanish, for example, then press the single quote key and then a vowel to get: á, é, í, ó, ú, ý, Á, É, Í, Ó, Ú, Ý. Or for the umlaut used in German press the double quote (shift+double quote) to obtain: ä, ë, ï, ö, ü, ÿ, Ä, Ë, Ï, Ö, Ü, Ÿ. For circumflex or acute accents used in French for example, then press the right pointing quotation mark and then the vowel to get: à, è, ì, ò, ù, À, È, Ì, Ò, Ù, or the caret then the vowel: â, ê, î, ô, û, Â, Ê, Î, Ô, Û. For the ñ used in Spanish or for nasal vowels used in Portuguese press the tilde and then the vowel or the letter n: ñ, Ñ, ã, õ, Ã, Õ. Finally for the ç used in Portuguese, French and Old Spanish press the single quote and the c: ç. For the upside down question mark or exclamation point, press the right Alt key (the Alt key that is to the right of the space bar) and the question mark or exclamation point (without the Shift key):,. (Note this will only work with the right Alt key and not the left. Also, the right Alt and Ctrl keys will no longer be useful for keyboard short cuts. You will need to press the left side Alt and Ctrl keys to access them. Additional character are available by holding down the Alt or Ctrl key and then one other key on the keyboard: for example you can get ß by pressing Alt s, or æ with Alt z, etc. In some Windows 98 applications the right Ctrl key will function as expected, though). The dead keys will function in any windows program except for DOS prompts (but will work under windows 2000!) and will allow you to continue to insert the tilde for internet addresses and the appropriate diacritical marks in documents created in any windows program. What to do if you can t access the control panel: If you are working on a network computer or a PC that has restricted access to certain functionality, like the control panel, don t despair, there are a few ways you can get the characters you need. Option B: Using the number key pad and ASCII values The old way: To obtain the á press the left Alt key and then on the key pad (not the numbers on the top row of the keyboard) type When you release the Alt key the á will appear. Here is the list of the other numbers for the rest of the characters (for Spanish only, at the moment): 0160 = á 0130 = é 0161 = í

3 Span 361 Quintana = ó 0163 = ú 0193 = Á 0144 = É 0205 = Í 0211 = Ó 0218 = Ú 0164 = ñ 0165 = Ñ 0168 = 0173 = 0129 = ü Lastly, you could also create a short cut for each accented character. You can do this in the Tools > Customize > Keyboard > Common Symbols menu in Word. Word also has a list of preprogrammed shortcuts for most special characters. Option C: For MSWord on a PC The new way: Most of the vowels for Spanish that you can obtain with the method just described above are done by pressing the Left Control key, then the single quote, and finally the vowel. Á = [ ctrl + ] A É = [ ctrl + ] E Í = [ ctrl + ] I Ó = [ ctrl + ] O Ú = [ ctrl + ] U Ñ = [ ctrl + shft + ~ ] N Ü = [ ctrl + shft + : ] U WordPerfect, on the other hand as a rather different approach. The customization menu is under Edit > Preferences, and depending of the version you have, some shortcuts might be preprogrammed for you. Take a look at their help menu to see what options you have. MAC OPTIONS: Option D: Reconfiguring your keyboard: The Mac operating system is a little more flexible or a little more cumbersome, depending on your perspective. Like Windows, the Mac OS gives you the option of creating regional keyboards. Be advised, however, that this will re-map the entire keyboard, and what you see on your key caps will not

4 Span 361 Quintana 4 necessarily correspond to what you get on the screen (just like it would if you select, say Spanish as a keyboard layout in a Windows machine). My personal choice is to enable both the U.S. and Spanish keyboard layouts and switch from one to another as I need. There are two Spanish options: Spanish and Spanish-ISO, I prefer the regular Spanish one since I learned how to type before the advent of computers (yes, on a typewriter ) and this last option gives me the same layout that I already know. It is, however, a bit troublesome that I have to think for a while where symbol is located, for instance, since I can t see it on the key caps (you obtain it by pressing Option+G) but I ll learn that one soon, I m sure. There is also a very handy Show keyboard viewer option under the little flags that appear on you menu bar that will help you learn where are the new keys. You can find the options to set up your different keyboard layouts under System Preferences > International > Input menu. Select the two (or more) keyboard layouts you want and check the Show input menu in menu bar so that you can select from one layout to the next as needed Option E: Using key sequence shortcuts: Under Mac OS 7 to 10 (X) you can also get accents by pressing the Option key and the letter E at the same time (Option+E) and then the vowel which you want the accent over. For example, to get á you would press: Option+E then the A key, for í press: Option+E then I, for an upper case É press: Shift+Option+E then the Shift key and the letter E at the same time, for the upside down question mark press: Shift+Option then? For an ñ you would press Option+N and then the N again. b. Spell-check / Grammar-check Adaptado del Cuaderno para Español 307 preparado por K. McKnight. Ya es hora que profesionalice su uso del español escrito, distinguiendo entre formas orales (coloquiales) y formas profesionales. Además debe hacer todo lo posible para aprender una ortografía y gramática profesionales. El uso de Spell-check y Grammar-check puede ser muy útil en este sentido. Todas las versiones de MSWord a partir de 2000 (tanto para Windows como para Mac) debe tener en el disco original las herramientas en español. Se instalan de la siguiente manera en Windows (en Mac la instalación generalmente ocurre cuando se instala el programa. Si esto no ocurrió así, cuando intente demarcar todo su texto como Spanish le pedirá el disco de Word con las herramientas): 1) Tools > Language > Set Language 2) Seleccione alguna versión del español; no importa cuál. En algunas versiones, hay que poner Spanish como Default para que funcione. 3) En algunas versiones ya en este momento el programa le pide el disco para instalar la función; debe estar en el primer disco del programa de MSWord.

5 Span 361 Quintana 5 4) En otras versiones, hay que intentar el uso del Spellcheck en español antes de que le pida la instalación: Tools > Spelling and Grammar. Y luego poner el Dictionary Language en Spanish. 5) Recuerde que estas herramientas no son perfectas (por ejemplo, no distingue entre los parónimos mas y más); a veces le dirán que una palabra está mal escrita solamente porque no está en su diccionario. Debe tener un diccionario bueno a la mano para confirmar cambios. c. El acento escrito Aquí tiene usted las reglas de uso. Se usa el acento escrito en español por tres razones: 1) para indicar que la pronunciación de una palabra no sigue las normas de la acentuación, 2) para hacer fuerte una vocal débil, y 3) para distinguir entre dos significados que tiene una misma palabra. La acentuación y el acento escrito: La acentuación y el acento escrito son dos cosas relacionadas. La acentuación es el énfasis que la voz da sobre una sílaba de la palabra. Por ejemplo, en la palabra canta, la voz da énfasis en la primera sílaba: CAN-ta ; en la palabra caracol, la voz da énfasis en la última sílaba: ca-ra- COL. El acento escrito es la marca o tilde que se escribe sobre una letra para indicar la acentuación: [ á, é, í, ó, ú ]. Hay dos normas para la acentuación: 1. Si la palabra termina en n o s o una vocal (a, e, i, o, u), la acentuación cae sobre la penúltima (second-to-the-last) sílaba: BOM-ba PLE-na ba-ga-zo ca-chim-bo 2. Si la palabra termina en cualquier otra consonante (que no sea n o s ), la acentuación cae sobre la última sílaba: tam-bor cre-a-ti-vi-dad ba-rril bur-le-a-dor a-rra-bal Se usa el acento escrito para indicar que una palabra no sigue las normas. 6 Span 361 Quintana 6 a-zú-car MÚ-si-ca tra-ba-jé Se usa el acento escrito para hacer fuerte una vocal débil. Las vocales a, e y o son fuertes. Cuando se unen dos de estas vocales, cada una constituye una sílaba: tra-e; flo-re-a; bur-le-a-dor. Las vocales i y u son débiles. Cuando se unen dos vocales débiles o una vocal fuerte y otra débil, se crea un diptongo una sola sílaba: ba-rrio; puer-to-rri-que-ño; puer-to; res-pon-so-rial; güi-ro. Pero a veces una vocal débil tiene fuerza; para indicar esto, es necesario ponerle un acento escrito: te-ní-a; o-í-do; dí-a; po-li-cí-a; a-ta-úd; ba-úl. Finalmente, se usa el acento escrito para distinguir entre dos significados que tiene una sola palabra. tu = your como = like porque = because mas = but se = self tú = you cómo = how por qué = why más = more sé = I know d. La escritura como una herramienta del aprendizaje y del pensamiento Cuando estudiamos la literatura, las palabras ocupan el centro de nuestra atención y son la herramienta fundamental que utilizamos para interpretar o analizar la literatura. Tenemos que aprender a usar las palabras bien para comunicar nuestras ideas y persuadir a nuestros oyentes y lectores. De igual forma, la palabra escrita es el vehículo que usan los artistas literarios para conmovernos, entretenernos y hacernos reflexionar sobre sus ideas. Pero su trabajo este semestre con las palabras tendrá consecuencias positivas mucho más amplias que solamente su aplicación al análisis literario: La habilidad de comunicar bien con las palabras es esencial a muchas profesiones y a su plena participación como miembro de su comunidad y mundo. El proceso de escribir le ayudará a comunicar sus ideas bien, pero también le ayudará a pensar sobre los textos, a o absorber y recordar información e ideas; o comprender nuevas ideas; o desarrollar el pensamiento crítico y complejo; o visualizar y organizar los pensamientos para ver relaciones entre diferentes elementos de un texto o problema; y o resolver problemas complejos. e. Los apuntes de lectura (reading notes) Cuando usted escribe mientras lee, mejora su comprensión de un texto y organiza y clarifica sus pesamientos sobre ese texto. Cuando Ud. ya haya llenado un papel con sus pensamientos analíticos sobre un texto, empezará a ver los significados y las relaciones entre sus diferentes partes. Use esta técnica en su preparación diaria y en la preparación de una presentación, un párrafo analítico o un comentario analítico. Escriba apuntes que respondan a las preguntas del Cuestionario o sus propias preguntas que Ud. se ha formulado en clase. Escriba apuntes que

7 Span 361 Quintana 7 analicen el uso de los recursos literarios específicos en que nos estamos enfocando en algunas clases. f. Los apuntes de la clase En clase su profesor presentará muchas ideas importantes sobre los textos y sobre cómo leerlos. Si usted toma apuntes (written notes) durante las presentaciones y discusiones estos apuntes le pueden ayudar a aprender el material y a desarrollar más tarde su propia perspectiva sobre un texto. La habilidad de tomar buenos apuntes no es natural. Tampoco es fácil tomar buenos apuntes a la vez que usted participa en la discusión. Estas habilidades requieren práctica. g. El mapa semántico Crear un mapa semántico es un proceso informal de escritura que le puede ayudar a pensar sobre una situación o un texto. El objetivo es poner sobre el papel rápidamente sin mucha reflexión una serie de diferentes observaciones o ideas sobre un solo tema o aspecto del texto, organizando las ideas para encontrar relaciones entre ellas. Esta forma de escribir las ideas puede ayudarle a llegar a una tesis o interpretación de un texto, porque le exige enfocar su lluvia de ideas y a ver relaciones en el texto. La palabra semántico del término mapa semántico se refiere a los significados (meanings). Un mapa semántico busca identificar y organizar los significados de un tema. Para hacer un mapa semántico, ponga el tema que le interese en el centro del papel y escriba como satélites (en una lluvia de ideas) todos los aspectos de ese tema que pudieran contribuir a su significado en la obra. Después añada evidencia a los satélites. Este mapa le ayudará a articular una tesis y la tesis le ayudará a seleccionar cuáles satélites o subtemas querrá tratar en su redacción. h. La tesis (Thesis statement) Este sitio de internet es quizá el más útil y acertado para aprender a formular una buena tesis en un trabajo escrito: Composition Center. Dartmouth College Last updated October < Writing a Thesis Sentence (Advice for Beginners) There's no debating this one: the thesis sentence is the most important sentence of your paper. Without a strong, persuasive, thoughtful thesis, a paper is doomed to seem unfocused, weak, and not worth the reader's time. What is a Thesis Sentence? A thesis sentence is that sentence in your paper which asserts, controls, and structures your entire argument. Let's look at these three characteristics one at a time. 1) The thesis sentence must contain an arguable point. A thesis sentence must not simply make an observation -- for example, "Writer X seems in his novel Y to be obsessed with

8 Span 361 Quintana 8 lipstick." Rather, it must assert a point that is arguable: "Writer X uses lipstick to point to his novel's larger theme: the masking and unmasking of the self." This sentence is not yet a great thesis sentence. Still, it can be considered arguable in that it raises some controversy. One might claim, for example, that lipstick doesn't signify a desire to mask. Instead, lipstick signifies the desire not to be forgotten. Notice how the characters' lipsticks stain their lovers' shirts, sheets, wine glasses, and handkerchiefs. In short, if your thesis is positing something that no one can (or would wish to) argue with, then it's not a very good thesis. 2) The thesis sentence must control the entire argument. Your thesis sentence determines what you are required to say in a paper. It also determines what you cannot say. Every paragraph in your paper exists in order to support your thesis. Accordingly, if one of your paragraphs seems irrelevant to your thesis you have two choices: get rid of the paragraph, or rewrite your thesis. Imagine that as you are writing your paper you stumble across the new idea that lipstick is used in Writer X's novel not only to mask the self, but also to signal when the self is in crisis. This observation is a good one; do you really want to throw it away? Or do you want to rewrite your thesis so that it accommodates this new idea? Understand that you don't have a third option: you can't simply stick the idea in without preparing the reader for it in your thesis. The thesis is like a contract between you and your reader. If you introduce ideas that the reader isn't prepared for, you've violated that contract. 3) The thesis sentence should provide a structure for your argument. A good thesis not only signals to the reader what your argument is, but how your argument will be presented. In other words, your thesis sentence should either directly or indirectly suggest the structure of your argument to your reader. Say, for example, that you are going to argue that "Writer X explores the masking and unmasking of the self in three curious ways: A, B, and C." In this case, the reader understands that you are going to have three important points to cover, and that these points will appear in a certain order. If you suggest a particular ordering principle and you abandon it, the reader will feel betrayed, irritated, and confused.
